US considering de-recognising UK's sovereignty of Falkland Islands

Apparently as 'punishment' for us not getting involved in the US and Israel's war against Iran, the US is considering stopping recognising our sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, and presumably supporting Argentina's claim - after all Milei is a huge Trump bootlicker ally.

Daily Express link as I know many here will dismiss a BBC or Guardian link:

I read it on Reuters and BBC.

This man wanted a Nobel Peace Prize now we wants world conflict.

The future of the Falkands is for the people of the Falklands not anyone Trump or his regime.

Smeuse · 24/04/2026 13:22

They also want to kick Spain out of NATO for not helping Trump in his war.

blacksax · 24/04/2026 15:34

Wankers. They can fuck right off with that idea.

Perhaps we could suggest that they return the Hawaiian islands to the indigenous people.

And the whole of America with it… I'm sure that native Americans would be happy to get their lands back…

I can’t think of anything I could care less about tbh. I’d be thrilled if my DH didn’t need to be sent to that cesspit again.

I’m being facetious, but meh.

Overtheatlantic · 24/04/2026 15:45

Sometimes I wish I could fake an English accent 😆 because my American one is still as strong as ever. ☺️

smallglassbottle · 24/04/2026 15:46

Can't we extricate ourselves from these wretched people? I know our defence tech is somewhat dependent upon them, but there has to be a way out. I'm just sorry we share a language with them. I feel sorry for the everyday people, but their weird presidents and governments can jump in the Atlantic as far as I'm concerned.

Edited

But it’s not whether we care about the islands belonging to the UK, it’s about the islanders themselves and what they want. From what I recall they had a referendum not that long ago and overwhelmingly they wanted to continue to be part of the UK.

FWIW I never agreed with the war, it was so sad that so many mainly very young men (lots only teenagers), lost their lives or suffered life changing injuries. It was horrifying. The locals have spoken about how young and polite the Argentinian soldiers were. But we can’t just hand the islands over because we can’t just tell those locals that they are now Argentinian.

Never stopped us handing the Empire back though.

You don't even need to go as far as Hawaii. There are first nation people or native Americans much nearer to Washington.

True. I don’t know what the answer is. Perhaps instead of the war there should have been a way to negotiate a plan between all parties.

I would fully support kicking Spain out of NATO on the grounds of a pathetic defence spending of 1.4% of GDP for years and freeloading off the defence spending of other NATO countries including the UK.

Why should UK taxpayers have to pay 2.5% of GDP and provide a guarantee of defence to Spain when Spanish taxpayers aren't willing to.

happysunr1se · 24/04/2026 16:06

Trump is setting fires to keep us occupied and stretched thin. Chaos makes him money

Well you cant and neither does the US

And the US threats have nothing to do with Spain's spending.

letsallchant · 24/04/2026 16:10

What a pathetic piece of tit for tat behaviour. And to think we were told Harris would be too wobbly and emotional as a female president! I wish everyone would just ignore these sulky outbursts.

Nothing to do with the US. They have no power over this.

Heyhelga · 24/04/2026 16:35

Trump is an absolute loose cannon at the moment. He's coming across as incredibly petty and immature.

Or you could say mentality unstable, he needs removing from the job asap, before he starts more wars.

I don't think JD Vance would be any better though in different ways.

There are no indigenous Falkland era everyone living there considers themselves British, is British and has always been British

Lemonbutters · 24/04/2026 17:10

Best just to ignore him, he’s an idiot and you can’t take anything he comes out with seriously!

Of course they do! They have absolute power to do whatever they want and no-one can stop them.

If the US wants to not recognise the UK's claim to the Falklands, and to support Argentina in their claim, diplomatically, economically, and militarily, they can and will.

There are no rules anymore and might makes right - surely you've learned this from the last 16 months?

But we wouldn't be handing the Falklands 'back' to anyone. The islands and the people living there never were Argentinian.

igelkott2026 · 24/04/2026 17:30

We (family) were talking about this a few weeks ago and thought it would happen. Trump is an idiot as we know, but the US hates the UK having any overseas territories. I think when King Charles visits, he should "take back control".

The US gave some limited support in 1982 but I think that was only because Thatcher and Reagan got on.

The Falklands aren't Argentinian and never have been. But Argentina might try their luck again if they think Trump will support them. I don't know if he's just talking nonsense though - we know he likes to be provocative.
