US considering de-recognising UK's sovereignty of Falkland Islands

FernandoSor · 24/04/2026 12:33

Apparently as 'punishment' for us not getting involved in the US and Israel's war against Iran, the US is considering stopping recognising our sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, and presumably supporting Argentina's claim - after all Milei is a huge Trump bootlicker ally.

Daily Express link as I know many here will dismiss a BBC or Guardian link:

And - OP - you think MNers will disregard a BBC/Guardian link compared with the DAILY EXPRESS?

I didn't realise anyone still read the Express other than Nigel Farage. But I can confirm the Telegraph has reported this too.

His every utterance is complete verbal poop.
Until he's out or dies🤞
UK should tell him ..get fucked.

I can’t think of anything I could care less about tbh. I’d be thrilled if my DH didn’t need to be sent to that cesspit again.

I’m being facetious, but meh.

Edited

I agree.

Notonthestairs · 24/04/2026 18:22

Trump is trying to deflect from the utter havoc he’s wrought on the global economy.

He has no more say over the Falklands than eg Macron does.

And there is no mechanism to suspend Spain from NATO.

It’s all deflection. His numbers are cratering and he can’t get out of the ME.

A large number of mumsnetters will dismiss links to the Guardian or BBC as ‘woke nonsense’. Just look at the Middle East or gender/trans forums. The Express came up as an alternative in my search and I thought it would fit in better with the worldview of many here.

Offer repatriation, all expenses paid + compo for land owned and so forth. You take your own chances after that.

I know it is not going to go down well, i.e. allowing another country to take it over, but realistically unless it is absolutely undeniably a strategic base or control centre, it will cost far more in lives and destruction to go to into combat/war in any way over this.

Is it that strategic or is it worth holding onto and fighting for, because it is British? Some things are not worth it, and as long as the inhabitants are well taken care of my view is let it go.

But can you imagine the reaction, primarily from those who would never be first to sign up for combat in the first place.

Of Course he has far more say then Macron. If he decides to provide military support to his buddy Milei to invade, he can and will. If he decides to slap 100% tariffs on UK exports to the US until we hand over the islands he can and will.

You have absolutely no right to make that decision for the people of the Falkland Islands. They have made their wishes clear through a referendum and that is all that matters. Argentina have never had a valid claim. Funny how people only respect democracy when it involves themselves.

Cheesipuff · 24/04/2026 18:32

King and Queen are due in the US soon -maybe Trump will rescind after speaking to KC.

Nothing to do with the US. They have no power over this.

This. I could launch a public enquiry into the legitimacy of Emmanuel Macron’s presidency of France but I’ve got bugger all say in the matter no matter what conclusions I might reach.

That’s because you don’t have the military and economic might to enforce your will on the entire globe.

But not Canada. Gone very quiet on that one since Carney stood up to him. Like all bullies he can dish it out but can’t take it.

But it’s not whether we care about the islands belonging to the UK, it’s about the islanders themselves and what they want. From what I recall they had a referendum not that long ago and overwhelmingly they wanted to continue to be part of the UK.

FWIW I never agreed with the war, it was so sad that so many mainly very young men (lots only teenagers), lost their lives or suffered life changing injuries. It was horrifying. The locals have spoken about how young and polite the Argentinian soldiers were. But we can’t just hand the islands over because we can’t just tell those locals that they are now Argentinian.

I think 4 people voted against remaining British. I went there 2 years ago, it's a stunning place.

flapjackfairy · 24/04/2026 18:42

the thing is he cant remember what he says from one day to the next. Why they cant remove him is beyond me. He is literally insane and cant string a coherent sentence together. When he is gone it will take decades to.undo the damage to the US reputation and gor anyone to trust them ever again.

But there is a reason why he shit posts so much.

It's to soak up attention.

Splatter the media with falsehoods so that they spend less time covering the fuck ups - like his war against Iran.

38thparallel · 24/04/2026 18:51

But we wouldn't be handing the Falklands 'back' to anyone. The islands and the people living there never were Argentinian.

This. How can something be given ‘back’ to a country which it was never part of.
‘Also, as other pp have said, the Falkland Islanders wish it to remain as part of Britain.

MaybeNotBob · 24/04/2026 19:13

"Sorry Donald, we can't help you out with your illegal war in Iran, because we've had to send all our forces to protect the Falkland Islands."

Shamefully ignorant response

I know most papers present things in their own view but I don't think anyone is making up crazy stuff Trump says. I stopped even fact checking after it turned out the Trump Gaza video and the video of him dumping manure on a 21 year old commentator were really posted by him.

What could anyone make up that's worse than what he actually says?

Been down to the islands more than once, long time back, (HM Forces, so yes, I'd "signed up") and I can promise you the vast vast vast majority of the locals certainly won't be onside with that.

The US used to want to be trustworthy, the one you could rely on. Not any longer, with Two Timing Trump.

The referendum saw 92% of all eligible voters turn out, resulting in 99.8% of votes being ‘yes’. It was confirmed by the independent observers that the referendum process was free and fair, and was executed in accordance with international standards and local laws.

In his book, the Commander of the Task Force sent there Sir Sandy Woodward said it would have been cheaper to give each Islander £1 million each and sail them aboard the QE2 to their preferred destination.
