A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Exactly - I think Labour have that problem that all of their candidates except Burnham are tarnished / have failed. Streeting is good but if Mandelson brings down Keir, I can see that putting people off of him.

if Labour actually want a chance of winning again, one of the Manchester Labour MPs is going to have to fall on their swords so Andy can get in…

Unrivalled · 24/04/2026 11:37

Reeves has been caught out in several lies and has alienated many journalists over the budget..hardly a safe pair of hands. She’s got the neck to try though!

EasternStandard · 24/04/2026 11:40

Reeves suffers a milder form of Starmer’s view of himself. She thinks everyone agrees she’s doing a good job.

But really I’m with @Upstartled

Anyone who ousts the hypocritical, cowardly bollard go for it.

She absolutely has! That pathological inability to read the room is quite startling. She seems almost disengaged from reality.

If Bollard goes, what are people's thoughts on his replacement? It's hard to imagine anyone could possibly be worse until you look at the likely successors...

Streeting - empty suit careerist who also got cosy with Mandy.
Mahmood - my personal preference, but probably seen as untested and someone who punches down (?).
Rayner - OMFG, just no - would probably lead to a run on sterling and a trip to the IMF.

Miliband - Hunger Games within 6 months.

Cooper - dull technocrat (definitely don't need any more of those)
Lammy - clown.

I can't see a route back for Burnham.

Judging by comments on other threads my confidence in the Labour membership choosing someone half decent would be…..about as low as it’s possible to get.

i don’t have any great regard for Burnham tbh, and whilst it is unclear whether he would have won the G&D by-election I’d love to know what those on the Labour NEC who stopped him standing are thinking now. Granted rational thought not something any of them have any great familiarity with.

were it not that a GE is still three years away I’d take great delight in the extreme contortions that Labour will go through. Though given Starmer’s gift for hanging on I do wonder of he will be gone as quickly as the general consensus seems to be.

EasternStandard · 24/04/2026 12:26

He won’t go willingly but I think MPs could move once they’ve decided on whom should replace the immoveable bollard.

He really fucked up with the OR sacking, but the rest too.

Unrivalled · 24/04/2026 12:37

It’ll be a textbook study on how to lose momentum - there have been no wins that appealed to a broad section of people.

that’s why they should’ve tested Burnham on that seat / if he had won it, it would show they’d finally got someone that could turn things around. May be a costly decision as the desire to protest vote against Labour will carry on building.

Vinvertebrate · 24/04/2026 12:43

I’m not a Burnham fan @boys3 but I was conscious that he was missing from the list of miscreants!

Bollard seems to be clinging on by his toenails this time - reprehensibly - but he’ll be getting another bloody nose in the May elections, and deservedly so. All bets are off after that.

All the candidates make me wince, but Ange most of all tbh.

True the NEC ran scared with Starmer as the most frit of the lot of them (bar Powell).

What a mistake, Burnham might not resolve it for them but he’d be much better received than a hypocrital gaslighter.

Unrivalled · 24/04/2026 12:48

Yeah they will look back on that and think they backed the wrong pony alright. It’s not like there’s any good news around the corner - rock bottom polling, local trouncing, bloodbath in Wales and Scotland at a minimum and worsening economic news…best Starmer can hope for is Sarwar has distanced himself enough that the anti SNP vote coalesces around Labour at the last minute. Doesn’t look like it will so far.

CandidLurker · 24/04/2026 13:32

I’m from the North West and I think this AB being “King of the North” stuff is a bit overblown.

when you listen to him speak he does sound assertive and definite about things and speaks more or less like a reasonably well educated average person who everyone can understand. Definitely more likeable than KS. I know low bar etc.

However I do think he starts off talking strongly about a certain topic but then ends up doing an awful lot of fence sitting, putting both sides of an argument etc.

Hermer is indefensible. I feel those veterans are owed serious recompense and apology.

I agree - it’s absolutely appalling. Especially as Hermer was hand in glove with that struck-off solicitor Phil Shiner.
Can the army sue Hermer? I hope so - and if individual wronged soldiers wanted to bring cases I would gladly contribute to a crowd funded (though I’m sure there would be plenty of layers who would work pro bono for such cases).

InertBird · 24/04/2026 13:47

I don't understand why Andy Burnham is regarded as a good prospect for PM: his hands are very dirty as regards the grooming gangs scandal. I think it would be madness to choose him.

Labour simply don't have a single decent candidate to replace Starmer. I wouldn't trust Shabana Mahmood at all. For all her recent Reform-lite pronouncements, there are photos of her on Free Palestine marches Hmm

justasking111 · 24/04/2026 13:51

Diane Abbot. She's too old for scandals now. Or on hands and knees those union eejits could ask David Milliband to return

BlakeCarrington · 24/04/2026 14:00

Labour have failed the country on just about every measure and demonstrated themselves to be incompetent liars at every turn. Who will rid us of this scourge.

BlakeCarrington · 24/04/2026 14:01

AB “king of the North is absolute BS. Unelectable and disloyal. Labour are unelectable.

Unrivalled · 24/04/2026 14:02

They’d talked about ‘the other milliband’ on TRIP and said that he’s v unlikely to ever come back to uk politics.

I think she is currently an independent. In the past she has been accused of antisemitism, in the current climate that would be very unhelpful.

Streeting is possible. He would be the first gay PM (fine by me).

Yvette Cooper is experienced at being in government - both in this shambolic one and in the previous Labour government. Labour has a problem with women though, I can’t see them choosing her.

Angela Rayner is popular with the unions but would get destroyed by Kemi every Wednesday. She would also have a whole bunch of U turns.

Miliband - I would be surprised. The press absolutely hates him.

Andy Burnham - no idea.

Rachel Reeves - surely not? If Starmer goes, so does she.

Bridget Phillipson - same as for Reeves I think.

Yes Diane Abbot is independent, which is great as she eviscerated Starmer in the house and the usual ‘right wing’ accusations can’t apply.

Boomer55 · 24/04/2026 16:27

As Starmer blocked Burnham from standing as a Labour candidate, Burnham cannot be leader. He’s not an MP. 🤷‍♀️

Clive Lewis was on the cusp of offering to stand down so that AB could get a shot at being an MP, before the Denton and Gorton seat was contested. I suppose they could try that again after the local election mauling and the Labour Election committee see the writing on the wall?

Unrivalled · 24/04/2026 19:13

Absolutely, and KS doesn’t have the political capital left to block AB twice.

Thanks @TheNoWord . I'm in Wales our surgeons , consultants can be overruled by a team in management who decides who to prioritise. It's a bloody disaster. For a GP to decide is a step to far IMO.
