Whats her secret?

Watching a programme from a couple of years ago, shes doing some walk with other celebs. Shes 73 in the programme!!! She looks like shes 20 years younger

She's full of energy, enthusiasm, so happy and positive

Im a right misery in comparison and decades younger.

I love Sue. She has a genuine 'joi de vivre' I reckon that's what keeps her young. I always remember her appearance in Gimme Gimme Gimme with Kathy Burke...hilarious!

Arlanymor · 15/04/2026 23:30

She just loves life I think - as @redfairy 'joie de vivre' - she just seems to act as if every interaction with someone else is a massive gift. I'm sure she has moments where she goes home, puts on her slippers and shoves several Ferrero Rochers in her mouth in one go because we all encounter shit people from time to time.

But because her breakout role was so loveable (and maybe not entirely acting) I wonder if most people approach her with the same upbeat and nice nature. I think I need to tell myself to be a bit more Su Pollard! (And that is the spelling, sorry to be a pain, but my IRL name gets misspelled all the time and it is annoying when it's only one letter wrong!)

TheAutumnCrow · 15/04/2026 23:30

When she does panto she does masses for local charities/appeals, I’ve been told.

I follow Timmy Mallet on Facebook and he is the same. I just looked it up and he is age 70. Such energy and enthusiasm and he finds joy in the smallest things. You can’t fail to feel uplifted watching his videos cycling around on his bicycle and having such positivity and enthusiasm for life.

I was listening to a podcast today on my commute and they were talking about finding purpose in the process of working towards your goals, not in the goal itself. And I think that’s what people who have such a positive attitude to life have, they enjoy the process of working towards their goals and if they achieve them, well that’s just a bonus. I think I could learn a lot from people like them.

She stopped to ask directions to a local diy store. She was so lovely and thanked me and waved from the passenger window till out of sight.
No different from her on screen character. ⭐️⭐️

I dont know where someone finds the energy to be like her

I used to live near her and saw her in the local pub from time to time. Her dad was with her sometimes and they were both very warm and friendly. She wore all the same glittery stuff as she does on tv. She seemed to just love life!

RampantIvy · 16/04/2026 07:48

I have seen her in real life many years ago and she was lovely, and not just "putting it on" for the public.

Unlike James Martin who is grumpy in real life and then puts on an act.

What sort of act does he put on given that he has a grumpy TV persona and thrives on that?

What a lovely thread. I loved Su Pollard in you rang m'lord. Timmy Mallett is also awesome on Facebook. He seems to be one of the few male presenters that hasn't had a scandal and I hope it stays that way. I met him when I was 10 and it is the only brush with fame I ever had!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 16/04/2026 07:51

She’s one of those people that would be so annoyingly exhausting to be friends with. Very in your face and loud

Well on this programme she is living with some celebs for a couple of weeks and isnt in their faces or loud, but she is exhuberant and chatty and also warm so I think I possibly wouldnt get exhausted by her

I clicked on this thinking
a. She’s dead or;
b. People would be slagging her off

How nice that it’s neither!

I was in the audience when that was filmed. No one in the audience knew she was part of the cast until she bounded onto stage.

My husband, who was my partner the time and went with me, still tells me my laughter can be heard.

Just a perfectly lovely person in every way.

I would - I think people like that struggle to read the room and make it about them and their ‘wacky’ personalities and there’s something attention seeking about it.

OvernightBloats · 16/04/2026 07:57

She comes across as someone who doesn't take life too seriously, the opposite of an anxious worrier. This optimism combined with her inner confidence are great qualities to have. I admire her unique style - she carves her own path and doesn't care about what other people think.

Also, it looks like she is not a sun worshipper so has good skin for her age.

GrianGealach · 16/04/2026 07:57

It’s leaving off the ‘e’ in Sue — it’s gives her rejuvenating superpowers…

I’ve met her and she’s exactly how she comes across on screen. I love her. #damehoodforsu

Gowlett · 16/04/2026 08:36

I like her. And Timmy Mallett.
And Mr Motivator. Great energy!

SerafinasGoose · 16/04/2026 08:37

Fun, eccentric and totally individual. That energy! I want to be more Su.

PuppyMonkey · 16/04/2026 08:45

I come from Nottingham where she is a total legend, as she also hails from there (and actually has the proper local accent, which is quite rare to hear on telly). Have interviewed her for the local paper and she was brilliant. And a proper professional to boot.

NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen · 16/04/2026 08:59

I loved her in Hi-De-Hi, You Rang M'Lord and Oh Dr Beeching. Although they were all light comedic roles there are a couple of moments in each where she was required to show pathos and her serious acting ability comes through clearly.

I saw her once at a train station about 25 years ago but I was dashing and a bit starstruck (which is hilarious as I've worked with senior government staff who are far more famous, but then they weren't a part of the joyful moments of my childhood 😀) I didn't go up and speak to her which I always regretted...then she brought her one woman show to my local theatre last year. She was genuinely interesting, I had no idea just how much work she's done over the decades, the stories she has to tell were fantastic. She was also subtly hilarious - I expected more of a pratfall humour but hers was far more developed and sophisticated. I recommended her show to a couple of friends who, under sufferance, took their older relatives to see it, and were surprised to find that they enjoyed the show as much as their mother/grandmother/great aunt.

I took my shy Autistic 12 year old daughter with me, we met Su at the end and she could not have been more lovely or more caring or understanding. There was a young girl in attendance dressed in a similar style to Su, she told her she was her heroine, that she wanted to get into the same career as Su, and Su spent ages just quietly chatting to her, giving her advice, taking her seriously, advising her parents how best to support her. It was a masterclass in professionalism and kindness.

She's making a new podcast called James and Ivy, a spin-off from You Rang M'Lord, with Jeffrey Holland, Susie Brann, John D Collins and Perry Benson if anyone's interested.

@Arlanymor She's written and composed a song called I'm Su Without An E which she performs in her one woman show! Totally agree with the spelling (same with my own name)

@LiviaDrusillaAugusta She's very different IRL when she's just talking to one or a handful of people - very calm, measured, conversational, almost quiet.

@Underthegreenwoodtrees I couldn't agree more.

@AnnieLummox She absolutely should be a Dame.
