Office chair. Does anyone actually spend this much?!

I’m overdue a new chair for my home office.
I did my usual scroll through fb marketplace and I couldn’t find anything much better than the tatty one I want rid of so I looked online for a good one (I have a bad back).

The best one (according to google) costs just under £1400! 😱

Does anyone have any good suggestions for a cheaper option?

Tried out some really expensive office chairs in John Lewis and elsewhere and found none of them supportive in the right places so not comfortable. Went to IKEA and found one there that felt much better.

been on MN for many years and I think this is the most jaw dropping post I have seen!

ps why a court case?

The case was based on whether the supplier of chair knew it was being used for pleasure rather then in a fighter jet. It is still on going.

Herman Miller was one of the ones I tried at John Lewis. Spent ages trying to adjust it to suit my back. No matter what I tired it was still uncomfortable. IKEA chair was good from the start. Really wanted something that was designed to last. Must have tried a couple of dozen before ending up at IKEA. Really not something I would suggest buying online.

We both have this one which is eye watering price

We have had them 10 years and use them 8 hours a day. We didn’t buy new we got them used from an office supply place. They were £500ish but have been money well spent.

You can buy replacement parts, he has new armrests on his.

i've got a leather office chair at home for my one day a week wfh, i found it in an unused store room at work, covered in building dust and gravel, i cleaned it up and it's unbelievably comfortable, it's honestly the best chair i've ever used (and i have a hermann miller in the office which i also love). i reverse searched it on google as it's so amazing and it turns out it's an eames lobby chair, currently retailing at £7k! so there are definitely some very expensive office chairs out there. (my boss said i could take it btw, i didn't just nick it!)

My husband has a Herman Miller chair - hes had it for 25 years, it still looks new and its been used a lot.
Well worth the investment.

I have a gaming chair from IKEA. I'm not a gamer but it's a good chair, fully adjustable.

You have to sit in them really before purchase. As much as I would like a really posh chair, it's a bit of a gamble to buy one online isn't it so you need a shop that has them on display.

Clearinguptheclutter · 15/04/2026 16:13

Wow. My dh has what I would consider to be a fairly fancy ikea chair which was IIRC about £300

SeriousTissues · 15/04/2026 16:57

Wow, that’s a ridiculous amount. I had a bespoke one through Access to Work or whatever it’s called and that was £800 - but it was made to my measurements!

I injured my back very badly about 15 years ago and have found it painful to sit in chairs since. Including Aeron chairs, alas!

I have one of these https://www.backinaction.co.uk/humantool prescribed.

It looks ridiculous, but it does work. I can sit down. I also now have an incredible iron core 😂

I have an ergo human. Not sure which make but a fully metal back and it cost about £600. My work bought it and if it broke I would happily pay that again. It is so comfortable.

Sometimes, I like to sit cross-legged when I work so I knew I didn't want the typical office chair. I went with a comfy armchair type like the picture attached from Wayfair and added caster wheels from Amazon to the legs. It's been 5 years now and I still love it. I think everything cost me around GBP100 or less (converted from Canadian dollars). Probably not the best for back issues though :)

On the off chance that you’re anywhere near Sheffield, I have one free on fb marketplace. I no longer wfh and don’t have the space. It’s very comfy/ as new/ high back/ 5 castors

Broidery · 15/04/2026 19:12

Another vote for Herman Miller - I spent £300 on a refurbished one for wfh - we have them at work and they are really comfortable.

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 15/04/2026 19:24

Dh got a new one one last week from ikes £350 he’s in it all day every day and loves it

JoanThursday · 15/04/2026 19:35

I've got the Generation chair by Knoll. I love it - very supportive and sort of moves with you. I bought it second hand back when lockdown was just starting (ugh) for about £250. They're about £900 new. Still loads of them around second hand - for eg: Knoll: Generation Office Chair - Refurbished - Office Chairs https://share.google/CD4kF00SwfmXvUkkC

JoanThursday · 15/04/2026 19:38

... And just read that Herman Miller acquired Knoll a few years ago.

@DaisyBD , that's a bit of a find! The vintage versions sell for £2-3K.

it’s such a lovely chair! totally comfortable (and i have constant neuropathic pain), the hermann miller i have in the office is nice but not as good. and it’s so beautiful 😍

BridgetJonesV2 · 15/04/2026 20:20

I've got an Orange Box ergonomic chair, it's superbly comfortable. Got it refurbished from Ebay, think it was around £60.

ACynicalDad · 15/04/2026 21:35

My old work got me a second-hand Herman Miller due to a slipped disc. When they closed the office and went remote, I asked if I could have it, which has been great.

Good grief! Mine was £30 off Facebook Marketplace from a few years ago! I couldn't justify much more given its occasional use. I might spend more if I used it every day.
