Office chair. Does anyone actually spend this much?!

NugsNotDrugs · 14/04/2026 13:24

I’m overdue a new chair for my home office.
I did my usual scroll through fb marketplace and I couldn’t find anything much better than the tatty one I want rid of so I looked online for a good one (I have a bad back).

The best one (according to google) costs just under £1400! 😱

Does anyone have any good suggestions for a cheaper option?

I have a Herman Miller in office and at home and wouldn't be without it. Saves my poor back which otherwise aches almost immediately

DeltaVariant · 14/04/2026 16:01

Yes absolutely. Mines a Håg Creed with optional extras. It cost more than that. Work paid as a reasonable adjustment because I have spinal issues. In the grand scheme of business costs my productivity is with a proper chair.

Let me guess, Herman Miller?

I have a preloved Herman Miller chair at home. It's amazing. Was under £200 and in beautiful condition. Second hand office furniture shops are your friend.

scarpa · 14/04/2026 16:27

I've got a Sihoo M57 and it's excellent. But some of their fancier ones in the £250+ range look even better. They're well-reviewed too.

DH has a £500+ chair (it's a gaming chair, but he uses it for WFH) and that's also great but so bulky.

A lot of places sell second-hand/refurbed Herman Millers though, and they're the best of the best.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 14/04/2026 16:40

Mine was over £1000 in 2003 as it was a made to measure ergonomic chair. It's the worst chair I've ever sat on.

SexIsNotNebulous · 14/04/2026 16:43

Prior to retirement I was a home worker for almost two decades.

I bought a chair from a company similar to this, it was a fully refurbished chair from a corporate office, so the quality was equal to what you sit on at work and the cost was far, far cheaper.

edited to add, I bought a Steelcase chair, as Steelcase were the preferred supplier to the corporate company I worked for (everyone's heard of them).

@SexIsNotNebulous is right, ORS and companies like them are the way to go. I bought a £700 Herman Miller chair from them during lockdown for about £120.

Any decent quality adjustable chair will do, the main thing is to go somewhere with a selection and try them out.

TeenLifeMum · 14/04/2026 16:54

We have a much cheaper than £1400 (I think £200-300) gaming chair which is so much more comfy than an “office” chair imo. And no, I’m not a gamer.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 14/04/2026 16:56

They do spend that much on chairs in the civil service.

Don't be silly.

MakeMineAMilkyTea · 14/04/2026 17:11

Mine was £350 back in 2022, had to order from a specific supplier so probably could have got it cheaper if I’d been allowed to shop around. Work paid hence being limited to suppliers

Have you ever seen an ejector seat? It's doubtful he was using it as a desk chair, though, so not really pertinent to the OP's question.

OP, my office had Herman Miller chairs and they are awesome. I'm sure there are decent knock offs around and you can often get the real ones secondhand. If you're spending a lot of time WFH, it makes sense to get as ergonomic chair as you can afford.

@user765847363 well I wasn't suggesting it as a possible option (the chair in question is now in police possession until the court case). I was trying to emphasis the point of more money spent does not mean better chair

SandrenaIsMyBloodType · 14/04/2026 17:28

The Humanscale Diffrient chair is very comfortable. It cost about £500 including delivery. I liked it because it was available in white and it still looks as good as when I bought it about 5 years ago

My CS chair was a fraction of that last year...

dEdiCatEdFeliNeEntHusiAst · 14/04/2026 18:15

Honestly if you need support for a bad back then this is the chair you need.
Otherwise you will fall into the trap of buy cheap, buy twice.
Also the company are amazing. The chair is delivered and set up for you. Any problems and they come out to deal with it.
I have two of these, one for work, which my company very kindly paid for and I have one at home. Its not the comfortest chair ive ever sat in but my god it is good for my back and other musculoskeletal issues I suffer with.

Herman Miller doesn't adapt to suit your working environment, you adapt your office setup to have the privilege of owning one!

Had these at work, shit chairs and uncomfortable. The RH Logic ones are much better. Would you work allow you to purchase second hand from an online shop that provides a receipt?

Johaanah · 14/04/2026 18:21

I have a Herman miller chair in the office and a HAG SoFi at home, also suffer with back issues and both are great, you’ll soon notice the difference after sitting in a basic chair for a day.

Also recommend the RH Logic chair above from Posturite, DH buys these for his business and he really rates them, you can configure them to your requirements.

Orchidhelp · 14/04/2026 18:37

I can confirm from experience that a generic John Lewis or Ikea office chair is not as good as good
as one of the specialist brands. Def recommend getting something decent if you use it every day.

I have one of these - but I bought a seller refurbished one from EBay for less than £200. It looked like new when it arrived.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/04/2026 18:50

Could you get a second dentist's chair?
I find them very comfortable and seemingly infinitely adjustable. In fact I think I could have dropped off to sleep in one if I hadn't had a great big fat hand wedged into my mouth!

ShakyBake · 14/04/2026 14:04

I had an old neighbour who was ridiculously flash, everything had to be the best of the best with no expense spared. Brand new car every year including a red Ferrari and Rolex watch. I am no judge, not my money and do what you want with it.
Well just between me and you, one time he wanted a new office chair (or 'swizzle chair' as he would often refer to it the prat), spent 10k+ on something that came off a fighter jet and wanted the world to know. Anyone, one day he flicked a switch and he was ejected into his ceiling. Now he rides around in a wheelchair. Please spend wisely and thrifty op.

I can only imagine how my face must have looked as I read that.

Ledwood85 · 14/04/2026 19:13

I also have a Herman Miller. Cost a fair bit, but I do spend 8-10hrs in it a day so very much worth it.

My employer negotiated a staff discount with them which I think was 15% off, anyone considering one could ask their employer to do the same (which I think is normal for any employer who buys bulk to furnish their offices).

NugsNotDrugs · 14/04/2026 14:17

@cornbunting I really like the look of that one. It’s in the running

Be careful. That chair says it’s intended use is 5 hours a day only. I made that mistake in Covid and had to return one to John Lewis.

I found my work chair so good that I just got the name, googled it and bought exactly the same one x

SpacesNotTabs · 14/04/2026 19:41

I've got a Posturite ergonomic chair, work had negotiated a discount, so it wasn't too bad, but it's a reasonable price anyway, and you can get 20% off if you subscribe.

We've had it around 6 years and it's still going strong

We looked at getting a Herman Miller chair for the office and they are very comfortable but we’ve not taken the plunge yet as I’m still trying to sort out how I want to style the office. I did notice though that there are a lot of refurbished Herman Miller available online at about a third of the price, or less. DP has a Herman Miller chair where he works and he really rates it.
