Office chair. Does anyone actually spend this much?!

I’m overdue a new chair for my home office.
I did my usual scroll through fb marketplace and I couldn’t find anything much better than the tatty one I want rid of so I looked online for a good one (I have a bad back).

The best one (according to google) costs just under £1400! 😱

Does anyone have any good suggestions for a cheaper option?

I was using one like this when working from home, my back pain was horrendous, it provides very little support.

I have this chair for working at home, it's great:

I was using an Ikea chair like this for a while, my back pain was horrendous. I eventually went to an office furniture store and tried some out. They staff wete really helpful in finding a suitable chair.

Kneeling chairs all the way - chronically bad back and sciatica and have used one for years with great results.

They do spend that much on chairs in the civil service.

Probably not for the majority of staff. Likely for a specific staff member who needs a specialist chair for a health reason.

Which Magazine top 3 best buys include 2 Herman Muller chairs at £600-700 and an IKea at £179 ( in 2nd place)

You can get expensive office chairs second hand.

The Humanscale Diffrient chair is very comfortable. It cost about £500 including delivery. I liked it because it was available in white and it still looks as good as when I bought it about 5 years ago

These are what DH’s company sent home for everyone to work on during Covid. They are excellent chairs-very good for the back!

Ikea Markus - 10 years and counting and still as good as new.

Just looked up which Ikea chair I bought and it's a Markus, had it since 2018 and it's still great. Was £150 at the time, it's only £159 now.

If you post a pic of what this 1400 chair looks like maybe we can find a cheaper alternative. Its hard to guess without seeing it. Ive bought many office chairs in the past but never for that much so im wondering is it a sofa armchair type office chair or ?

TheDogsMother · 16/04/2026 11:12

It is worth looking at second hand office furniture outlets. I went to one in Farnham and picked up a used Herman Miller chair for about £280. There are loads of these companies about and the furniture is generally in good condition.

I have a posturite ergonomic one and it’s the best chair I have ever had it was £400 but work paid for it. I have ADHD and my fidgeting means I am a good chair tester. IKEA one lasted 12 months, and cheap Amazon one was about a month.

BloominNora · 16/04/2026 11:26

I had a really nice retro looking green velvet and wooden arm rest chair which I paid about £90 for, but after around 12 months it got very uncomfortable.

I've just bought this: Efomao-X-Embroidery-Adjustable-Computer-Executive

It's really ugly but is big, squishy and comfortable and I can sit in various positions such as cross legged, feet up etc and the fold out footrest is great - really helps with my ADHD fidget tendencies!

Yes, me! £900 anyway. Self employed though so claimed against tax. Still love it after 10 years
