Office chair. Does anyone actually spend this much?!

I’m overdue a new chair for my home office.
I did my usual scroll through fb marketplace and I couldn’t find anything much better than the tatty one I want rid of so I looked online for a good one (I have a bad back).

The best one (according to google) costs just under £1400! 😱

Does anyone have any good suggestions for a cheaper option?

We have HM chairs in the office, i’d not want one for home as I think they’re astonishingly ugly and no more comfortable than the one I got from Amazon about 4 years ago for less than £200!
I have ongoing back issues since 2018 following some slipped discs, my back aches more in the office than it does at home - it’s definitely not a one size fits all!

I got a Dynamic office chair - you can find Dynamic on officefurniture.com - I chose one that was apparently used by air traffic controllers on all night shifts and it is very comfortable still. I got it a good ten years ago I think. It was about £500 then and I think it was well worth the moolah.

You owe it to yourself to get a Herman miller. you spend hours a day in this chair and your posture and productivity will thank you.

Search for office clearance second hands - from a quick google going rate is about £500-600

I have an extremely expensive ergonomic one. I am disabled and really struggle with pain in normal chairs. I also have an adjustable desk that will go up up standing (I don’t stand at it because I can’t stand for long but sometimes I work in my wheelchair and the desk needs to move).

PlainSkyr · 14/04/2026 19:58

Best chair I’ve owned was for £79 from Ikea that I purchased 14 years ago and used nearly everyday. The faux leather needs some touch up but it’s the best in terms of posture, arm support and head/neck support.
I’d recommend that you try in person before you buy - sometimes cheap can beat expensive!

Best chair I've used was Hag Capisco so shout out to the other person who loves them. I want one for home but don't like the colour options currently and my existing office chair from is fine (TNK Flex Actiu).

And yes, people do spend money on home office chairs! Backs are precious.

Foodylicious · 14/04/2026 21:08

I have something similar to the below for homeworking. And I have a Posturite chair at work (both provided by work for physical health reasons).
I got the posturite one provided by work about 5 years ago and it was £1200. My new one for home, was around £250, and it is honestly more comfortable.

Ooh. I sell them for a living! You can get a properly decent ‘commercial’ office task chair for a lot less than £300 and a really very good ergonomic one for £400 ish. It should have a seat slide, lumbar support and if possible a floating back. Not to forget adjustable armrests.

You can spend as much as you want on a chair but if it’s not properly adjusted for you/your height/your desk and you’re sitting on it incorrectly, you might as well use a dining chair…

I’ve been looking for a new one for my home office and most are so ugly this one is nice! I’m going to order this one thank you!

I bought this for my dh for his birthday this year only in brown leather. It's very comfortable and really well made. He uses his chair a lot as he works from home and is also a gamer

DH works from home and wore out multiple office chairs before finally getting himself (with my blessing) a chair. He loves it. Roomy, sturdy, ergonomic, and excellent quality.

Got a cream leather one in home store and more for seventy euro a few years back. I’d say try out as opposed to getting online, was irritated by a lot of the ones I tried!!!!

GU24Mum · 14/04/2026 23:05

@FruAashild- me too and it’s great! I wfh 3 days a week and can do pretty long hours so it was worth the investment.

Ponderingwindow · 14/04/2026 23:08

I spent a small fortune. When you use something for so many hours a day and already have a bad back it doesn’t seem so crazy.

i also have a ridiculous bed.

cost per hour of use isn’t bad is what I tell myself.

Friendlygingercat · 15/04/2026 02:23

The tax man paid for all my office furniture.

Wanttohelp26 · 15/04/2026 03:28

Both my kids got Secret Lab gaming chairs which are quite expensive. They are supposed to provide good back support. I am thinking about treating myself to one, as my desk chair only cost just over £100 from John Lewis and my DH has that Markus one from IKEA mentioned above (still going strong after many years).

toastofthetown · 15/04/2026 03:46

DH has a HM chair and loves it. He spends hours in in every weekday so worth the investment. His is a a refurbished one. I have an Ikea chair which I like, but it’s clearly not as good or supportive and I can see where the extra money goes, and if you can afford it refurbished I’d really recommend.

Found my 14 year old model still selling on Ikea.

We have that chair too, which DP spends far too much time using (laptop version of doomscrolling), he's not light and its lasted forever.

ShakyBake · 14/04/2026 17:18

@user765847363 well I wasn't suggesting it as a possible option (the chair in question is now in police possession until the court case). I was trying to emphasis the point of more money spent does not mean better chair

Edited

been on MN for many years and I think this is the most jaw dropping post I have seen!

ps why a court case?

Bjorkdidit · 15/04/2026 04:39

Tbh, I took that as one of those 'urban legend' stories that gets repeated, and embellished, so often that it takes on a life of its own.

MiddleAgedDread · 15/04/2026 06:07

I asked where our office chairs are from
as they’re comfy and I needed a new one for home but they were £500. Well out of budget so I went to Ikea as it was the only place I could find where you could sit on them to try before you buy. some were awfully uncomfortable but I got one for about £150.

Discobooloo · 15/04/2026 11:13

My Herman Miller is great and was about £450 from John Lewis in a black Friday deal. Worth looking around for that brand.
