Fish and chips are only good if you've been for a long hike in the rain and are starving and cold

Tapas has to be eaten outside, in Spain

Greek salad tastes better in.... Greece

mazzikid · 14/04/2026 02:44

As someone who doesn't like orange juice at all in day-to-day life, I still really enjoy it as part of a hotel continental breakfast!

I know someone who thinks this. I used to mock them, but I read an experiment which showed that taste perception can be affected by shape - I think it was apples tasting sharper when cut in squares vs circles or something.

Yes. Carrots in baton shapes are much nicer than sliced carrots, which are annoying.

Tapas and a jug of Sangria in the sun in Spain.

Gelato in Rome.

A free alcoholic drink of anything in a Casino in Vegas.

Used to be a San Miguel at the Spoons in an airport departure lounge, but they don’t stock it anymore. 😬

A fresh cream scone and jam in Devon or Dorset (always jam first then clotted cream).

A real fresh cream cake from Sainsbos to scoff at home after the weekly shop, till they got rid of the counters. 😢

Toast with butter and jam with a cup of tea with sugar only tastes amazing when you've just given birth

Sounds amazing. I was being sick after I gave birth both times so none for me. Nothing until the next day!

I say that tea tastes at it's finest after lunch. Definitely not a morning drink for me.

Red wine tastes better when it's raining. Summer or winter. Rain is needed. My best glass of red wine was under an awning in Florence on Easter weekend 2005 on my own with a book. Rain sheeting down.

"Gin and tonic only tastes good when I am with my sister. "
Ah that's sweet 😊

An abvious one, but mulled wine or glühwein only tastes good when you're with other people, skiing or at a Christmas market or something when it is really properly cold. Otherwise it's just- hot wine in a cup wtf?

ilovepixie · 14/04/2026 04:15

Carrots are nicer cut into batons then circles .

A full English breakfast is fabulous in a hotel but I never want one at home.

You can't drink water from a mug. It tastes wrong. Glass or bottle only.

Totally agree about water.

Completely agree. I really dont like any other pasta, Penne is vile imo.

But spaghetti is lush!

Fusilli by far the most disappointing of the pastas.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 14/04/2026 04:54

I think most of these things taste nice all the time. Some people are just making a poor version of them.

shiningcuckoo · 14/04/2026 05:08

Mushy peas taste best at the fair with mint sauce. Pasties taste best sitting on a wall overlooking the sea in Cornwall. Trifle tastes best straight out of the big bowl in the fridge.

sashh · 14/04/2026 05:08

Fanta outside the UK.

A fry up breakfast in a greasy spoon or delivered from one.

Fish and chips are not the same since they banned newspaper wrapping. I doubt any of the staff knows how to make a bag for the chips.

As a teen I had horrendous periods, including projectile vomiting, but by 5pm I could eat and my dad would go to the Chinese and I always had chicken and pineapple with chips and no food has ever matched it since.

EdinaTheConfessor · 14/04/2026 05:28

Fish and chips out of the paper, sat outside on the sea front (I’ll take riverside if no sea nearby). Just not the same on a plate.

Ouzo and retsina both only taste nice in Greece.

Exactly what I was going to say.

Ice-cold vodka on the other hand- tastes good anywhere.

Elanol · 14/04/2026 05:50

Kebab at 2am

AutumnLover1990 · 14/04/2026 06:04

Chips at the seaside

MayaPinion · 14/04/2026 06:08

Rosé. Delicious in Spain or Greece. Tastes like sweet acid at home.

Sagealicious · 14/04/2026 06:09

I only like Pepsi when eating KFC

holachicatita · 14/04/2026 07:04

Tea and toast tastes better if you've just had a baby!

Myoldbear · 14/04/2026 07:11

Gin and tonic only on a Friday night.

I never even want it on any other day, but when it's Friday then nothing else will do!

For me, coffee should ideally be served in chunky pottery mugs, and tea in fine bone china.
Both seem to taste better that way.

Cat3rpillar7 · 14/04/2026 07:14

Pepsi Max in Centre Parcs😂

Steelworks · 14/04/2026 07:22

Bezaz · 13/04/2026 22:44

Orangina is far better in a bar in France!

I agree.

I was about to say the same about water. Why does it taste different in a mug compared to a glass?

Fat coke on holiday in the sun somewhere from a glass bottle with ice and lemon

I never drink fizzy drinks otherwise

Yes!! I came here to say this. Ice cold, full fat coke, somewhere hot and sunny.

CarolinaLiar · 14/04/2026 07:25

Milk only tastes good when I’m pregnant.

In my case anyway. I loathe milk normally but drank, and loved, a pint a day when I was pregnant.
