I can't help wondering how Keir Starmer ever got to be made a sir? I always thought sirs were people who had done something special?

This question is easily google-able... Try harder.

Bikergran · 11/04/2026 10:17

Automatic upon him becoming a QC, I believe.

DollopOfFun · 11/04/2026 10:18

Sir Gavin Williamson exists. Now that's boggling.

No. KCs / QCs do not get an automatic knighthood. As a PP has said, the answer is so easily found online that this question just has to be some sort of bait.

MaidsRoom · 11/04/2026 10:21

He was a long serving and fairly successful Director of Public Prosecutions.

What do you know about his career before politics, OP?

There are many people who have been knighted for stuff that is far less "special".

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 11/04/2026 10:25

It is a usual honour bestowed on former directors of public prosecutions. See also Sir Max Hill, Dame Alison Saunders, Sir (later Lord) Ken McDonald, Sir David Calvert-Smith and so on ad infinitum.

So odd that 2 separate posters think that becoming a QC/KC results in a knighthood.

I agree with pp that the answer is so easy to find out that this has to be baiting of some form. Would have been faster to google it than to start this thread.

BillieWiper · 11/04/2026 10:29

Well why did Jimmy Saville have one?

I don't know about his career, I'm going solely on his behaviour which is a mirror to his character which I find is unable to understand and allow any ideas except his own very narrow point of view.

What’s that got to do with getting a knighthood? 🤣 you’re being very weird OP.

his career would be the starting point to research, you acknowledge in your first post that it’s given to people that have done something special, not to do with points of view so that would be your best starting point to look at, Google is free.

im not even a fan of the man, but faux naive posts like this are ridiculous.

not really, I just wondered what sort of criteria are in play in general - possibly very questionable ones (I'm speaking generally here). Calls the whole thing into question really....

You don’t get a knighthood for being broad minded and accepting of other people’s point of view, that’s really not how it works.

That said, he was an excellent director of public prosecutions and did a lot to move the dial on VAWG. Good man in the completely wrong job now imo.

He received it for his work as Director of Public Prosecutions and oversaw a number of significant prosecutions like the 2005 terrorist bombings, MPs expenses scandal and 2011 riots.

Scotiasdarling · 11/04/2026 11:07

The more pertinent question is, why as a supposed socialist did he accept it?

It’s a knighthood. It’s just some shite awarded by an unelected family. What do you expect it to be?

What makes you think that the two are incompatible? Socialist countries have honours in recognition of service.

Maybe you should do a little reading about the criteria and why he got it. I’m no Starmer fan believe me but he has been very successful and admired before he became PM.
You’re looking pretty silly right now.
