How does someone like Keir Starmer receive a knighthood?

I can't help wondering how Keir Starmer ever got to be made a sir? I always thought sirs were people who had done something special?

C o l crisis is caused by war and the effects of oh and the last government. and a dictorial president of another country. How do you suggest he cures the c o l crisis ?

I meant "effects of war"

he's weak, he lies, just for starters...

Do you have any examples of him lying please?

Never Here Keir? Probably through services to the travel industry as he always seems off on jollys.

Still waiting to see when he intends to tackle the Cost of Living Crisis?

Rachel Thieves seems to think that taxing everyone more will solve it and sort out the economy...

Do you think having to spend time for work purposes with Donald Trump and his awful political associates (Vance, Hegseth etc) is a jolly? Do you see trips to Ukraine to show support for an ally is a jolly, given they're at war and it's risky? Do you see it as a jolly to meet other international leaders and discuss face to face the various serious problems facing the world today?

I would see all of those as necessary parts of the job of being Prime Minister. We need to be on good terms with other countries so they can support us if we need it.

Automatic upon him becoming a QC, I believe.

No. There are plenty of QCs and KCs who never get one.

It's virtually automatic for a Director of Public Prosecutions, though.

AnnaQuayRules · 11/04/2026 13:51

@pusspuss9 why on earth ask this question and then say you know nothing about his background and career.

He was DPP! DPPs are almost always given knight or dame hoods.

not really, I just wondered what sort of criteria are in play in general - possibly very questionable ones (I'm speaking generally here). Calls the whole thing into question really....

It really doesn't call anything into question.

You seem to think that the fact that you don't like him, means that his knighthood must be questionable. Which really doesn't say much for your intelligence or logical thinking.

upinaballoon · 11/04/2026 13:54

MaidsRoom · 11/04/2026 10:21

He was a long serving and fairly successful Director of Public Prosecutions.

That's why I thought he received the knighthood.

the ones that make me laugh are KS is gay (sees extraordinarily unlikely he would hide it if so) or a pdf file (absolutely zero evidence, gives no indications or even “vibes” ala savile)

it’s like anyone the don’t like has to be a sexual deviant - and let’s make sure we do the good right wing thing of murkeying the waters between being gay and criminal sexual behaviour, cos you know they’re obviously interchangeable

I think those ones have to be the Russians - Putin is notorious for saying everyone he dislikes is gay…

What a bizarre post. MN seems to be attracting more and more posters who lack any sort of critical thinking

Sadly, I think that social media in general has led to a dearth of critical thinking in the population.

But yes, the OP is a classic example.

COL Crisis has been going on since 2022 so that's no excuse.

How do I suggest he cures it? By capping utility company profits and fat cat salaries. Maybe he could have suggested that MPs forsake their 5% pay rise this year (it's not as though they don't already earn enough, they aint going to starve... and Never Here Keir looks as though he could lose a few pounds himself).

British Gas made 163 million profit last year. How about they make less profit and people have the ability to heat their homes?

I think that it's taxing for most international leaders to keep changing times as they hop around the world,(none more than weary Mr. Zelensky). Whether you like a prime minister or not, photos of what they looked like before and after being in the job suggests that it takes its toll.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 11/04/2026 14:02

Exactly.

Scotiasdarling · 11/04/2026 14:09

It must be nice for the PM to see the level of support on here, or perhaps he's got his own office on to writing the replies. Anyway, he's the least popular prime minister we have ever had, and that's saying something.

He has taken the largest amount of gifts and freebies of any MP since 2019, in fact as many as the next five MP's put together. This raises serious concerns of conflicts of interest.

He avoids PMQ 's like the plague and times announcements so he can't immediately be held to account.

In case anyone has forgotten, he tried to cancel the elections being held next month because he is very unlikely to be keen on the results. Not a shining example of democracy.

On the subject of his knighthood, if he really doesn't use it why accept it? Many people with more brains, talent, and integrity than him have turned them down. (Francis Crick, Alan Bennett, George Bernard Shaw, Stephen Hawking, Danny Boyle, and David Bowie to name but a few from a very long list). He certainly seemed to want people to be aware of it when he used to refer to his wife as 'Lady Vick' (She wasn't and isn't, she's lady Starmer .) It made him sound absolutely pathetically pleased with himself.

Clearinguptheclutter · 11/04/2026 14:09

It would be easier to ask Google than ask here

anyway regardless of what you think of his abilities as PM he was a long serving and well respected DPP

I think it's because there are elections coming. So we get more of these faux dumb/faux naive posts in the hope that people just read thread titles. There will be more of these in the run up to the May elections. Funnily, I saw something today that reminded me we have a Dame Priti Patel. Now that, surely, warrants more of a "Why?" than someone who was the DPP getting a knighthood.

upinaballoon · 11/04/2026 14:15

Please be very sure that no-one's office wrote any reply I've ever written on Mumsnet, or my letters to newspapers.

'Least popular'?. Bugger popularity. I doubt if that makes him tremble in his shoes.

Don't be ridiculous. His whole position depends on him winning votes. No one is going to vote for someone unpopular.

I think people Equate it to X, where someone posts something utterly fake and 99% of the population there believe it. Hopefully Mumsnet has a more ... critical thinking audience?

Scotiasdarling · 11/04/2026 14:35

And every single one of his 14, or is it 15 , U turns was made in order to court popularity! (It didn't work)

How would that work with KS given he was knighted before he was a politician? Which OP in their ‘faux naivety’ has not bothered to acknowledge.

Received before he was a politician. So not covered by my proposal.

SheilaFentiman · 11/04/2026 14:54

Just because he’s a member of the Labour Party, why should he have turned down a knighthood? Tony Blair has one. Harold Wilson was made a Lord. Neil Kinnock a Baron.
