How does someone like Keir Starmer receive a knighthood?

I can't help wondering how Keir Starmer ever got to be made a sir? I always thought sirs were people who had done something special?

Don't be ridiculous. His whole position depends on him winning votes. No one is going to vote for someone unpopular.

There's a difference between one person being seen as unpopular because we are now in a stupid situation where MPs and PMs are seen as celebrities, and a party being unpopular because of its policies.

I would have thought that most ministers consider what life might be like if their positions change, as in they lose an election or lose a constituency seat.

See his excellent work in law and as DPP. HTH.

He was a long serving and fairly successful Director of Public Prosecutions.

Haha. OMG, he’s a total failure & the CPS only takes failed lawyers. He’s a total embarrassment. Glad his legacy will be a long list of absolute disastrous decisions, complete ineptness, traitorous decisions against Britain, spiteful & vindictive policy-making. Oh well. He’ll be gone next month when he’s knifed by one of his own.

I don't know about his career, I'm going solely on his behaviour which is a mirror to his character which I find is unable to understand and allow any ideas except his own very narrow point of view.

This is so bizarre and ironic!
Basically you don’t like him therefore cannot understand why he’s got a knighthood - do you understand ideas outside of your own very narrow point of view?

He was also, and this is significant given some government policy, a genuinely highly regarded human rights lawyer who edited a key legal textbook on the subject. I think I’m right in saying this was part of the citation for his knighthood.

Indeed, he was very well known during his career as a barrister for the amount of pro bono work he did, particularly on human rights cases. He won numerous awards and accolades as a result (e.g., being named Human Rights Lawyer of the Year). Regardless of what you think of his politics (or of the man personally), he was an excellent and committed human rights advocate for many years.

How do you feel about Rayner being PM instead?

Long serving but I’d disagree with successful, he brushed under the rug Jimmy Saville and the Rochester grooming gangs.

I'm amazed it's taken this long for JS to be dredged up.

He was Director of Public Prosecutions. This job engenders this title.

A much better use for this thread would have been a discussion about whether cabinet positions should come with automatic peerages, and possibly a wider discussion of the honours system in it's entirety.

However that would not only not give much scope for Starmer bashing, but also risk looking at the behaviour of the Tories other parties when in power. So I can see why the OP swerved that.

Best to eke out the ammunition. We've still got "But Jeremy Corbyn" and "Keirs Beer".

I didn't know Rochester had grooming gangs until this evening. You learn something new every day, hey?

You don't know what you're talking about. Keir Starmer is a year younger than me so we were going through the school system at the same time. At that time A levels of BBC indicated a candidate at the top end of the ability range of those taking A levels, and of course only a small minority of the population did take A levels. I went to an extremely academic school, not unlike his, and getting AAA was a rare feat. First class honours degrees were very rarely awarded.

Sorry, but you don't know what you are talking about. I went to university seven years before Starmer, to a more prestigious university than Leeds. BBC at A level was far from the top end of ability. I had AAA, my husband had AAAB. I went to an academic private school, he went to a grammar where four of them in his year got 3 A's. The standard offer for his course was BBB.

Leeds was a very unselective university.

Happy. Because she will cause a recession within a year so we then have a general election next year (Rayner is on manoeuvres after next month’s local election wipe-out) & Labour will be cleared out & Reform get in.

Rayner in charge & her hard left policies will cause a recession. Absolutely. And yes, she wants hard left policies. The markets will respond & we will have a recession.

Rayner’s hard left policies will mean she will max out her credit cards, paid for by increasing the national debt.

Then the IMF will be called in & threaten her, causing a recession.

This is Labour’s modus operandi. Every. single. Time.

Massive tax hikes, massive pay hikes to public sector, massive pay offs to trade unions. Then in a short time, the country goes bankrupt as it can’t afford it. Then it goes to the World bank to get a loan, they say FO, you’re (the UK) is bankrupt and can’t pay its bills. Then a general election is called.

It was highly rated for law though when he would have applied.

No, I don't think I said it was untrue. But it very well may be. It wasn't good for anything else.

CurlewKate · 11/04/2026 19:08

Well, if he got his degree from an “unselective” university, his becoming a well regarded DPP is even more impressive.

I think it's time to break out this article again.
Especially when people trot out the same tired old nonsense about how bad Labour are with the economy.

You must think we're all stupid.

Just looked and the new Irish president also went to Leeds University. Presumably, she lacks brains as well.
