How does someone like Keir Starmer receive a knighthood?

I can't help wondering how Keir Starmer ever got to be made a sir? I always thought sirs were people who had done something special?

He received it for his work as Director of Public Prosecutions and oversaw a number of significant prosecutions like the 2005 terrorist bombings, MPs expenses scandal and 2011 riots.

Edited

He was also, and this is significant given some government policy, a genuinely highly regarded human rights lawyer who edited a key legal textbook on the subject. I think I’m right in saying this was part of the citation for his knighthood.

What makes you think that the two are incompatible? Socialist countries have honours in recognition of service.

Well it's very hard to believe that someone believes in equality of they expect people to call them 'sir'.

I don't know about his career, I'm going solely on his behaviour which is a mirror to his character which I find is unable to understand and allow any ideas except his own very narrow point of view.

Is there something about his behaviour that you don't like then? If so, what is it?

Ted27 · 11/04/2026 11:21

Most people have no idea how the honours system works.
The monarch doesn't personally choose who gets an honour.
I received a BEM in the New Years Honours. A very modest award.
Someone nominated me, providing a citation or justification as to why I should receive it. It goes through a vetting process and they end up with a list. The King just rubber stamps it.
Anyone can nominate someone for an award.
In a previous job I was also involved in handling nominations before they were submitted. There are strict criteria.

Although having worked for Gavin Williamson, I did think that was a bit of a shocker

he's weak, he lies, just for starters...

Is he weak? He has endless mauling from the press, who have their own vested interests, but keeps calmly on. I think his handling of the Iran war and staunch refusal to drag us into the orange buffoon's war crimes has shown real strength.

SilenceInside · 11/04/2026 11:29

The whole honours system is questionable almost by definition. Plenty of people get nominated for less than stellar reasons, because they are the right kind of person who knows the right kind of people at the right time.

What are you even talking about?!

hes been prime minister for 2 years. You clearly know nothing about his life before that which earned him is knighthood. wtf would you know about whether he was a “liar and weak” as DPP?

Itcantbetrue · 11/04/2026 11:34

@HoppityBun bait ?

What for ?
This is a discussion forum so I assume she wants to discuss it ?

BelleEpoque27 · 11/04/2026 11:36

He had a highly distinguished and successful career before becoming PM. You don't get where he's got in life by being a walkover.

All politicians lie on occasion, it's part of the job. It's actually the right thing to do in some cases. What specifically are you concerned he's lied about?

As for being weak - he's withstood endless shite from the press that would never have been headlines for Tory PMs, and he's kept us out of an illegal war despite concerted pressure from Trump. Seems like he's doing ok to me. And no, I didn't vote Labour. I'm so glad we've got him in power and not someone like Farage or Johnson, though.

TonTonMacoute · 11/04/2026 11:39

A lot of civil servants get all sorts of honours as a matter of course.

Yes so do I, a steady, strong and calm voice has definitely been what is needed.

I think this thread is just designed to taunt. Perhaps from someone not based in this country, as often seems to be the case.

I think KS probably deserved his honours far more than David Cameron or Boris Johnson's hairdressers anyway!

Automatic upon him becoming a QC, I believe.

Thats not true my Uncle is a QC ,well KC now and has been for over 30 years

Then ask a question to raise a discussion. Don’t ask a simplistic factual question that can easily be answered by Googling.

BillieWiper · 11/04/2026 10:29

Well why did Jimmy Saville have one?

Well before everything came out about him
He did raise milliions for charity
Yes i realise ,it waa an excuse so could carry on with his abuse
I think he was posthumously, stripped of all his honours .

tryandbepositive · 11/04/2026 11:54

What a bizarre post. MN seems to be attracting more and more posters who lack any sort of critical thinking

I would make one simple change in that no elected politician or party donor could receive one, other than military honours if they served in the military.

Nnbf · 11/04/2026 11:57

He's a decent human being, who I just happen to disagree with.

Also very easy to see why he got his knighthood.

How would that work with KS given he was knighted before he was a politician? Which OP in their ‘faux naivety’ has not bothered to acknowledge.
