@walllaw - thank you very much for your bigly great rant. I loved it, it was suitably braggadocious, yet modest. Grin

Much as I despise Vance, he’s played a personal blinder with these talks -

  • The face of the US negotiation: makes him look reasonable and statesmanlike.
  • Repeated references to consulting with Trump through the talks: subtly shifts the blame but still portrays loyalty to POTUS.
  • Was conspicuously MIA while the missiles were flying but now front and centre in the talks: gives his anti-war stance credibility and allows him to distance himself from Trump post Midterms.

I disagree.

He is now "Mr. Iran". - the failures will be his, and any triumphs Trumps.

@walllaw I couldn't agree more!

I have said this repeatedly to DH when he reports back on his conversations with his brothers and friends in the US, who (mostly) pathetically say "what can we do?"
"Why the fuck aren't they out there harassing their (mostly) Democrat representatives?"

3rd email to (Labour) MP.

Not being a tribal voter, the Greens may well swing it for me.

Anyone fancy guessing what both sides will do now? Will Trump just walk away and leave Iran to rebuild energy infrastructure and control the SoH?

I'm only 50% thru the article and already angry. We've seen what we think are possibly refuelling aircraft recently and I'm in NE Scotland. Starmer is lying to us. I need to send another email to my SMP too.

From parliamentary petitions site. Looks like we are in a minority.

No. He knows if he does that he's fucked. Hence the bigly ships turning up. USA will take control of the Strait.

It needs renaming Strait of Donald's Jacket

I don't think he can walk away, Oil prices, fertiliser shortage. Helium shortage on the horizon too. And Iran are still firing away, using up what remains of Patriot. Gulf states will likely start talking. If the US are not actually protecting us, then get rid of the US bases. I can see individual local deals.

I suppose if the gulf states kick the Americans out, then the oil starts flowing then Trump can walk away ?

I don't think it's too far fetched that Trump dumps Israel even?

I honestly don't think we are out of the woods yet re him using nukes. Small ones. On their nuke sites. Then walk away saying job done.

I think Trump will send ships to the Strait of Hormuz to escort/protect shipping. There is no other option now. The USA will now be stuck there for years.

If he could do that he would have done it by now. Even if it did work I’m not sure the insurance companies would be happy for boats to be escorted by ships with the target flag on.

If you want to get through the SoH you need to be really nice to the Iranians so they will let you. Which is unpalatable but a situation caused entirely by the US and Israel.

It takes weeks to move ships.

Agree re the insurance but I think the reason he does not have the ships there is logistics and availably. Takes time to prepare the ships, then at something like 30 days to get there from the US.

Surely any attempts to take control of the Strait will be resisted via Iran, so we are talking a return to bombing between Iran and US?

Define "take control".

Yes - that's another problem the dim Don has caused with his plastic language.

Operators and insurers will - rather unreasonably - want legal watertight definitions of "control" and "safe" before they allow their wallets to sail through any straits anywhere.

My rather simplistic view of "control" is that an unarmed ship is able to navigate through the area "controlled" without incident. Whether that be the risk of a mine, of being attacked from the air, or of being boarded by a military force. Because that is what control looks like.

Britain controls the channel, as an example.

I was referencing UnluckyWalnuts use of the phrase, but I agree with your definition of "taking control" and suspect that shipping companies and insurers would also have a similar definition.

So how does the US "take control"? Increased military action isn't going to make the Strait safer, at least not in the short term.

I'm worried about what options the US might consider for control in the medium/long term.

Edited

The only options are destroy Iran and enough people who live in it to ensure they cannot continue.

Or do what Iran want,

It was the same option Britain had in 1939. Destroy the third reich. Or give in to it's demands. Whatever they might be.

Irans choice of response is similarly binary.

RedTagAlan · 12/04/2026 11:09

CNN:

"Secretary of State Marco Rubio was shown on the big screen at the UFC fight in Miami, Florida moments after Vice President JD Vance announced that no deal had been reached with Iran.
Rubio is at the fight with President Donald Trump. Reporters traveling with Trump and Rubio observed the two smiling and enjoying the action."

And you only need one lucky hit to make the operators and insurers decide that the strait is not as open as Trump has declared it to be.

English channel is a good case. The British control it the Germans most definitely closed it during ww2.

Anyway. He seems to have declared a blockade on Lies Social. Not quite sure what he is blockading. Presumably the small number of boats from Pakistan and China that are managing to get through.

Unfortunately I can only see the same 2 options.

UnluckyWalnut · 12/04/2026 11:15

Trump says he doesn't care whether they reached an agreement or not in Pakistan. His ships are there and others are on the way. They are there for the foreseeable. US personnel will die no doubt while he continues to build his ballroom and attend MMA fights.

Pretty sure they are the only two options. And we’ve already discussed a lot why the first is difficult. Which is why nobody has tried it before. This really is a hell of a mess Trump and Netanyahu have got the planet into.

They don’t even appear to be close to ending Iran’s ability to attack.
