"Well now you are going to trip the "antisemitism" alarm that ensures debate ceases and shouting starts."

It took 4 minutes

Aside from Israel/Lebanon (i appreciate that's a big aside) is the "ceasefire" holding or has there been bombing in Kuwait?

US navy ships ‘pass through Strait of Hormuz’
Several warships belonging to the US Navy crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, according to the US news outlet Axios.
This was the first time a US warship had crossed the strait in a move that was not coordinated with Iran, a US government source told the outlet.
“This was an operation that focused on freedom of navigation through international waters,” the US official said.
The ships entered the strait from the east and then made their way back out into the Arabian Sea.
Iran has claimed that it issued a warning to a US warship entering the strait that it would be attacked if it continued on its course. The warship turned back following the warning, Iranian officials told state TV.

The UK is probably either a paradigm of country/state and geography, or best avoided at all costs.

And you can never tell which from day to day 😀

It's always been like that. Fragile as well. However Kings and Queens.

Kurdistan.

When the maps of the Middle East were being drawn in the 1920s
a deliberate decision was taken to slice Kurdistan up between several countries
to keep the Kurds weak.

The existence of lines on a map or a flag does not remove the existence of a state

or a county for that matter - see Middlesex

Ah, well ... local (well Pinner) resident Russell Grant was a big wheel in the Middlesex mafia ....

When I started secondary School, there were still books that were stamped "Middlesex County Council" in the school library ...

Well now you are going to trip the "antisemitism" alarm that ensures debate ceases and shouting starts.

"Israel" hasn't existed as a place for well over 2 millennia. There is a book about it somewhere.

Beyond that it's far too deep for this forum, time of day, or audience.

I'm quite happy in saying that my general grasp of history and geography and politics is well into the <5% of the publics level. And I would run a mile before even speaking that question out loud.

Agree. Some of us remember the consternation when Israel state, not country, was established after the war. Because even though I was born less than two decades after, it was controversial in 1948.

Previously known as Mandatory Palestine.

logicisall · 11/04/2026 18:03

Right to answer questions.

@Legssses yes Kuwait is being attacked atm.

@Terrribletwos
Regular posters on this thread understand that we often drift into topics that feed into the Trump debate. My questions were a reflection on the previous statement that the problem with the ME negotiations was Israel. It was not something that I had ever considered, but felt that this thread was a safe place place to ask a genuine question, especially as it then led into the other questions.

Please explain to me why it is a stupid question. What if I subsitute Taiwan for Israel?
They were hypothetical questions, used to think more deeply on the ME in this instance. I would say more Philosophy than History needs to be applied.

The TL;DR is that after WW2 and the horrors of what the Nazis (not Germans, Nazis) got up to, there was a brief intense soul searching in the rest of the world (which was quite happily anti semitic before the war) that maybe things had got a little out of hand.

Hence the revival of the Balfour declaration and a kind gesture by Britain (as the main occupier of Palestine at the time) to give away other countries land to make up Israel as a permanent home for the Jewish people.

Obviously the people in these occupied lands had no say in how this unfolded (you can see where Trump gets his ideas abut Ukraine from).

I am well aware this is insultingly simplified to the point of not really being much use. However I don't think there is anyone on the planet who can be said to truly understand the Middle East. (Maybe) least of all anyone who lives there.

Thanks for answering. That's awful. I haven't seen it reported by the media yet.

Also not sure what the US warships have achieved? They were told to turn back, they turned back, therefore proving that the world has to dance to Iran's tune to transit the Stait, which we already knew.

That last question isn't aimed specifically at you @logicisall, just trying to make sense of it all.

I hope I was only half joking.

Just for the deletion message I wasn't shocked, offended or disgusted by the question. If more people asked more questions and processed the answers, I can guarantee we would not be here now.

SerendipityJane · 11/04/2026 18:15

Also not sure what the US warships have achieved?

In Trumpland they have proved the SoH are safe, so he can taunt the world a second time if they decline to pass through them.

It's possible that he's paid Iran enough that they happily partnered in a pantomime with the US to further their strategic goals.

State or country?

Countries within Europe have changed within my lifetime.

Born in Northern Ireland, island of Ireland, within the UK. Both sets of Grandparents and parents were born before independence. Although we're all Irish now following the Good Friday Agreement, which celebrated 28 years yesterday.

So I'm UK and Irish Nationality and the UK and Ireland kept out of Schengen to preserve the common area agreement.

You've hit the nail on the head. It starts with this question, doesn't it.

Ah, I see, so a philosophical question.

Why would you substitute anything..that makes no sense when you're specifically asking why should Isreal exist. That does make me ponder.

Whats the point in this stupid question?

It doesn't solve anything or even create any possible answer.

Personally, it's unhelpful to try and use ciphers to discuss Israel. If for no other reason than all countries are unique and Israel doubly so.

RafaistheKingofClay · 11/04/2026 18:29

It was a reasonable question. I might go as far as saying that not being able to ask those questions has probably contributed to getting us to where we are today.
