I live down the road from LBA - did think it was windy 🤣

We once could see our house from the plane going into Leeds - only to be diverted to Stansted. What should be a 10 minute journey home took a lot longer

We once passed over our house on the south coast in the way to landing at Gatwick.

and got diverted to Glasgow!

a few days before Christmas!

Bettercallsalli · 05/04/2026 07:30

In north Manchester. Awful wind all night, now torrential rain and a very very wet garden.

Me too, it was very windy last night! Just had a quick look in the garden and my gnome has been blown over!

OneTimeThingToday · 05/04/2026 07:47

I think lssy night was a great demo of why Doncaster airport is needed... to mop up all the flightson LBAs frequent bad days.

also, this thread is mumsnet at its best (and i feel the crew of the dublin coastguard helicopter should be honorary mumsnetters as they clearly get it 😀)

I’m reading this thread on Sunday morning - please can you reveal all now? What was their pattern?

Big thumbs up to the Dublin Coastguard Helicopter team. It's a shamrock!

Tah dah!

Aw! The image didn't appear in the quote. If you look back about 4 or 5 pages you'll see it.

I put it as sensitive so as to not provide spoilers!

I can see your photo now Grin

Does anyone actually pay for FlightRadar please and, if so, is it worth it?

Modern equivalent of trainspotting.

Although I see trainspptters several times a week. At least we do this from the warmth of our own homes.

Morning!

No I don’t pay, I’m happy with the free access.

I often track friend and family flights but don’t use it quite as much as last night. Always much more interesting during a storm as flights are diverted.

Morning! I was watching a flight from the Canary Islands try to land at LBA at 2.30 am and failing and then I had to go to sleep. It’s a bit quieter this morning.

How big was your gnome @canyon2000 ?

We get lots of interesting planes flying over us so I downloaded FR24 to see what they were. Last year we had Donald Trump’s entourage fly over us when they were returning from Italy, so many US Air Force planes flying in formation.

RampantIvy · 05/04/2026 09:08

We are under one of the routes into Manchester airport, which is about 35 miles away as the crow flies, and no distance at all in a plane.

DameProfessorIDareSay · 05/04/2026 09:09

Is there a general FlightRadar thread on Mumsnet?

I used to live under the Heathrow flightpath and liked to see what was coming in to land over us. I’m now in a rural area not close to any major airports so a plane going over us is unusual and I fire up the app to see what it is!

Two massive US aircraft went over early one morning last week, really low and loud, and we have been seeing a few military planes lately, but of course they don’t always show up on FR so I usually have to wait for someone on the local FB group to identify them.

Would be great to have a thread to let people know of interesting flight events, especially for us insomniacs 😴

Jet 2 Tenerife going TOGA at Edinburgh. Got down to 800ft too!

For info in pilot speak it's just a Go Around

TOGA is an aircraft control and instrument mode ( short for Take-Off/Go-Around) but I know for some reason some of the spotters, especially some youtubers seem keen on using the "TOGA" acronym in the wrong context...

Continuing in my pedant mode (sorry) but hoping to inform I'd maybe point out the altitudes displayed on Flightradar can be pretty inaccurate and in low pressure situations such as last night an aircraft indicating 800 feet on approach could be a lot lower..

Just want to say thanks for starting this thread. My house is near lots of huge trees so high winds like last night make me very nervous. Watching flight radar and the goings on at Leeds Bradford really did distract me until the wind died down here about 1 am and I managed to sleep.

It really is a good distraction for the nerves!

WimbyAce · 05/04/2026 09:42

I had to go to sleep lastnight but wondering what happened in the end to the Amsterdam flight to Leeds?!

I didn't know what TOGA meant, and appreciated the explanation.

leshirondelles · 05/04/2026 09:48

Ah the joys of being diverted (several times) from Leeds Bradford to Newcastle! If it’s not wind, it’s fog!
