Ah the joys of being diverted (several times) from Leeds Bradford to Newcastle! If it’s not wind, it’s fog!

Similar.
When you live 5 miles from LBA and have to get back from Manchester.

Ah OK...whatever.....

Ignore. I appreciate more information as I’m sure do many others

I spent a holiday, last year, in Suffolk, sitting in the garden tracking the flights in and out of the US Airbases.

And wait till you start on the ships and yachts (from my hotel balcony). 😂

Yes, a few years back I tracked my new car all the way from South Korea.

I grew up in Roundhay, so LBA is always/will always be Yeadon! When we were kids, we used to go as a family to watch the planes. There were far, far fewer then so it was exciting and a lot less routine than now.

(Although last night was anything but routine Shock)

I had to go to sleep lastnight but wondering what happened in the end to the Amsterdam flight to Leeds?!

A flight from Amsterdam has landed at Leeds this morning. I didn't get yesterday's flight numbers but hopefully had last night's passengers on board

WingBingo · 05/04/2026 10:24

This is the view of Leeds from my bedroom window. With a good pair of binoculars I can see the end of the runway.

Come on Amsterdam and KLM we are all here in support. Though the wind is howling outside.

I don't know why but this made me laugh so much. 😂
Honestly, I'm not the best flier and I'd have found it incredibly stressful to watch all that in real time last night, but absolute kudos to the pilots. Such skill and calmness in the face of such a challenge.

Although personally I'd rather they just diverted me to Greenland or Tasmania or somewhere and I'll walk home than be on board while the pilot attempts a tricky landing for the third time. 😱

OneTimeThingToday · 05/04/2026 10:30

I think the Flight Attendents probably deserve some credit as well.

The most agile thing ive ever seen was a FA in a dodgy landing into Innsbruck suddenly throw himself at speed down the aisle, distributing several sick bags as he went then back to his seat. Apparently he had lots of practice of that manouvere flying that route regularly!

PhoebeBuffay1234 · 05/04/2026 10:31

I know this might seem like an obvious question but does this mean there’s nothing at all at Teesside? We’re close to it and under the flight path so will be interesting to watch from time to time.

Yes of course, they are the ones at the sticky end, trying to manage all the hysterical passengers and the vomit.

At least a couple of possible reasons for that:

  1. Aircraft only usually transmit the data Flightradar picks up from just before engine start to just after engine shutdown...
  1. Not sure about the Teeside area but Flightradar doesn't always have coverage right down to ground level in some parts of the world/UK.

Best thing to do is keep watching and see if something pops up.

Thank you so much for the explanation - that makes sense!

I shall keep an eye and see what I can see. I’ve not heard anything go over for a while so that would explain it being quiet.

Morning! I was watching a flight from the Canary Islands try to land at LBA at 2.30 am and failing and then I had to go to sleep. It’s a bit quieter this morning.

How big was your gnome @canyon2000 ?

We get lots of interesting planes flying over us so I downloaded FR24 to see what they were. Last year we had Donald Trump’s entourage fly over us when they were returning from Italy, so many US Air Force planes flying in formation.

He's about a foot tall. Upright again now!

Oh my 143 posts since I turned in last night.

I think this all highlights how many times things Go Right in aviation.like, there's nothing on the news about the sheer DRAMA of what was going on over Leeds Bradford. (Or the Dublin coastguard 🍀🤣)

It also makes me even more likely to take the train for doable distances.

With the rescue if that pilot in Iran last night I wonder if any of the aircraft were showing up in flightradar

Cute! Glad he wasn’t damaged. I don’t know why I decided to put out my garden furniture yesterday 🤦‍♀️

Was that really necessary? If you're bored, go and find another thread.

Yay! Now it’s way past my bedtime. Can’t believe I’ve just spent nearly 3 hours on this!!

Ive read threads on here before about flight radar - very interesting so following last night I thought I’d have a look too….blimey it was no exciting watching the planes come in and then go around again! Very addictive… was so late 2am when I finally said enough go to sleep, I’m hanging today though!
I won’t tell my hubby why I’m so tired, he’ll think I’m quite mad watching planes on my phone! 😂😂

notimagain · 05/04/2026 11:28

Not a chance at all of that, certainly not whilst over Iran.

Flightradar (and the other tracking sites) rely on aircraft cooperating with ATC and other aircraft by transmitting data out....

If the rescue force was transmitting anything out at all it ill have been highly encrypted and in a form only visible to the US mil.

RosieMilkJug · 05/04/2026 11:31

The US air force refuelling planes appear on flight radar so there’s always a clue about where the action is taking place.

God all that going round in circles and changes of altitude plus the bumpiness.

Betano · 05/04/2026 11:33

If anyone fancies plane spotting from a sunbed, we had a lovely holiday here in Crete which is directly underneath the flight path for Heraklion airport. There was one plane passing every few seconds in August. Had the best time by the pool, FR in one hand, cold drink in other 😁

I finally called it a night once I saw Gran Canaria get diverted to Liverpool and another sue for Leeds diverted to Manchester. Think it was about 3am 😱

I just watched one go from Newcastle to Teesside that I heard go over. Not too long to track either so I am now of the opinion they did that especially for me so I could listen out!😂😂
