Ive read threads on here before about flight radar - very interesting so following last night I thought I’d have a look too….blimey it was no exciting watching the planes come in and then go around again! Very addictive… was so late 2am when I finally said enough go to sleep, I’m hanging today though!
I won’t tell my hubby why I’m so tired, he’ll think I’m quite mad watching planes on my phone! 😂😂

If you found FlightRadar addictive, make sure you tune into Jerry on his YouTube channel “Big Jet TV”! As another poster said, he’s live again this morning!

It’s a bit of fun, mate. Calm down.

Yes, well. @notimagain is a pilot (former pilot?) who knows what they are talking about, and is often on flightradar threads talking considerable sense.

Was that really necessary? If you're bored, go and find another thread.

It was as necessary as his pedantry.

Interested in this thread?

Then you might like threads about these subjects:

Ahh, just what every thread needs. A “knowledgeable man” to keep us little ladies right.

It's definitely An Event when those bloody massive 787s go over or land.

The US air force refuelling planes appear on flight radar so there’s always a clue about where the action is taking place.

Yes they do sometimes, especially when they are operating in airspace where civvies are also present...

Where has it been said that @notimagain is a man? On here, most posters are women.

So wish I had found this thread last night - I find it so interesting to watch!

Who gives a shit whether the pp is a man or not? 🙄

I (and many others) welcome posts from knowledgeable people on threads like this one.

In the absence of female pilots posting on the flightradar threads, I'll make do with the information shared by @notimagain if it's all right with you.

Indeed. @notimagain is a regular here on the FR24 and has been incredibly helpful over the years.

LargeAmericanoQuick · 05/04/2026 13:52

I have been looking at the flyers on the flights, too.
It's so interesting to see how many flights the frequent flyers actually do.
Granted, they're mostly crew, but it's a snippet into another world 😊.

Explaining something and giving information is not pedantry.

notimagain · 05/04/2026 14:28

Thanks for some of the previous.

I was probably a bit harsh with my first post this AM but (and I kid you not on this) to commercial pilots, former and current, "doing a TOGA" comes across like the sound of a thousand fingernails being dragged down a hundred blackboards.....

I'd hate it to enter the MN vernacular but maybe should have handled it more gently.

I grew up in Bradford & had family at Yeadon (it’ll always be Yeadon Airport to me 😀) so this is particularly interesting. I’ve flown in & out of that airport & had no idea it’s such a difficult one. Every day’s a school day on Mumsnet!

I grew up in central Leeds so very close to Yeadon airport. It will always be Yeadon airport to me too. 50 years ago they used to do an hour long sightseeing or taster flight. My Dad took my two older brothers aged 9 and 10 but not me because I was 18 months.

I still call it Yeadon airport.

My Dad always referred to Ringway for Manchester! There was a flight to Gibraltar many years ago when the Spaniards had the land border closed, they were not allowed to fly over Spain and once when the wind was horrendous the flight was diverted to, I think, Casablanca!

You weren't harsh at all.

How do you see that?

RampantIvy · 05/04/2026 09:47

I didn't know what TOGA meant, and appreciated the explanation.

It's what we used to call Touch and Go when the RAF we practicing it.

Seconding the question ‘how do you see that?’.

I'm afraid as far as TOGA goes that's a not quite..

The TOGA system and the associated TOGA switches that operate it come with the aircraft, they're not a manoeuvre.

On Takeoff (the TO bit of TOGA) when appropriate you press the TOGA switches and (aircraft dependent) the system sets take-off power and sets up part of the instrument system to give take-off guidance to the pilots.

On approach if you need to Go-Around (the GA bit) pressing the switches gives you go-around power and go-around guidance on the flight instruments.

Sometime relatively recently some communities got hold of the acronym and started using TOGA as a verb ...as in "to do a TOGA"...but it wasn't in pilot speak as a verb when I was working and I don't think that has changed.
