I felt humiliated today

At work today my manager brought us some treats in for Easter, I had a biscuit and was eating it on the shop floor, she actually told me off I felt like a naughty school girl, she told me to hide it, I felt so humiliated, this isn’t the first time she’s done things like this, is she bullying me?

Ok I hold my hands up I shouldn’t have eaten a biscuit on the shop floor, but she shouldn’t have belittled me the way she did either

She didn’t belittle you. She told you not to eat on the shop floor. That’s what a manager has to do when someone is stupid enough to eat on the shop floor.

It makes me not believe you when you say she treats you like this in other ways, because that’s not belittling you.

justasking111 · 04/04/2026 22:43

@pinenuts75 . I would start looking for another job. When you find one you think you will like preferably at a good salary. Hand in your notice and move on.

do you have hobbies or intrests that you know she likes to talk with others about ?

No I don’t know what she finds to talk to them about

Telling people off in front of staff and customers is belittling. It's very frowned upon and managers shouldn't do it.
The manager should've pulled her out the back to mention the not eating. That's a good manager.

pinenuts75 · 04/04/2026 22:19

Why should I let her win though?

It's not a competition! How childish!

Ponoka7 · 04/04/2026 22:44

When you aren't liked, you need to follow the rules. I've always told my children that it doesn't matter what other people are getting away with. If you like the job, just keep reminding yourself of why you are there and don't let her change your mood. There'll be days when you'll have to concentrate on payday and bite your tongue. Work, like life, isn't a popularity contest.

This sort of comment is just picking on the OP.
You know what she meant and no, she didn't mean it was a competition.

I worked in retail for years and the rule was you eat in the staff room on your break. Its not exactly rocket science is it!!

No I’m just stupid clearly, and everyone including work my boss would be better off if I wasn’t here

carchi · 04/04/2026 22:45

As an ex retail manager for many years I would never allow my staff to eat on the shop floor in front of customers that's very unprofessional.

Yes I agree. Sometimes people come along and just don't gel for whatever reason. Life is too short to deal with this day in day out. I would look for another job too, just for sanity. It's hard out there job wise though.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 04/04/2026 22:46

I think the food is a red flag in a way. The OP was obviously wrong but doesn'twant to won't admit it, and thinks the rules don't apply to her. She's been reprimanded and says it's actually bullying, when it's not; it's just that she doesn't like being told off.

There's probably other instances or things that the OP does which aren't acceptable too. 🤔

I've worked in both clothes and food retail many years ago and eating was never allowed on the shop floor, regardless of what it was.

dollytea · 04/04/2026 22:46

try not to think about it, you shouldn’t have eaten on the shop floor and she shouldn’t have reprimanded you on the shop floor. I’d try and avoid her as much as possible. Some people just clash. f@@@ her!

Ok. Fair enough, I stand corrected.

Jamesblonde2 · 04/04/2026 22:48

You sound about 15 OP. Grow up. Everyone is telling you the same thing. Do no eat ANYTHING on the shop floor. Do you understand the word unprofessional?

TappyGilmore · 04/04/2026 22:49

Okay maybe your manager doesn’t like you, and if she doesn’t, this thread is a good indication of why not. First, you shouldn’t be eating on the shop floor. This is surely common sense, even if no-one has ever spelled out rules for you. Second, the fact that you think customers eating/drinking is even slightly similar to you as a worker eating or drinking (other than a quick sip from a water bottle) also indicates that you’re lacking in common sense, or manners, or something. But it’s interesting that you note that “they’re not supposed to” - so you do know it’s not okay to eat in the shop then?

Can’t think of anything else I do wrong apart from exist of course, she hasn’t mentioned anything else apart from things are running better since she’s swapped my role, I guess I’m good for some things

God you sound like a flouncey drama-llama OP. Everyone knows you don't eat in public during work hours in your place of employment.
It doesn't matter if you were eating a biscuit or a haunch of venison - you shouldn't have been doing it and now - having been told that by a LOT of people you're all 'Oh well I'll just leave and disappear and nobody will ever have to set eyes on me again'.

Are you sure you're not 8?

BooneyBeautiful · 04/04/2026 22:51

pinenuts75 · 04/04/2026 22:39

I’ve seen others eating too, maybe she just didn’t see them

But just because other people are doing something wrong, doesn't mean you should do it too. I used to tell my DD this when she was younger, as nine times out of ten, she would be the one who got caught! Don't do anything wrong in the first place!

shhblackbag · 04/04/2026 22:52

pinenuts75 · 04/04/2026 21:44

How come customers come in with food and drinks then when they’re not supposed to?

Bad manners for them, completely unprofessional for you. I'm surprised that has to be said.

Yes i apologised in another post for eating a biscuit on the shop floor

If she told you off on the shop floor then yes it's bullying. Any issue management have with staff members needs to be discussed away from the shop floor in private.

She does sound a little flouncey but she's also had a hard time throughout this thread. She is being defensive. Natural?
