I felt humiliated today

At work today my manager brought us some treats in for Easter, I had a biscuit and was eating it on the shop floor, she actually told me off I felt like a naughty school girl, she told me to hide it, I felt so humiliated, this isn’t the first time she’s done things like this, is she bullying me?

If you are public/client facing then you should not eat unless you are on a break.

How often do you see paramedics, teachers, vets, actors on stage, beauty therapists etc snacking whilst working - it’s very unprofessional.

She should have had a quiet word with you but you were 100% in the wrong.

Just accept that you did wrong and don’t do it again, that’s all.

What else do you suggest? Go to HR and complain about her telling you off for eating a biscuit? I can't imagine they'll be very sympathetic.

They might be at the telling off in front of customers and other staff. Hugely unprofessional and doesn't help towards staff-manager good relations.

Happyjoe · 04/04/2026 22:26

No, actually that is unprofessional. No manager should ever tell off staff in front of others.

I agree …. And that’s as obvious as not eating on the shop floor - both unprofessional

It took 2 seconds to eat, it wasn’t a burger and fries or anything

You clearly don’t get it. It’s common sense. It might not be a rule that’s written down or maybe it is written down (or should be). I cannot remember ever being in a shop where the staff were eating EVER. That’s in 50 years too. It doesn’t matter what it was or how long it took to eat. It’s unprofessional. That’s perhaps why you have an issue with your manager!

I've been in a situation where a really unpleasant (bitchy/bullying) supervisor took a dislike to me. Everyone had some experience of that side of her, but she would be smarmy and nice to them in between whereas I got 100% horror show bullying. I was also a very good employee and well liked by colleagues. I very much doubt you are imagining it OP and there really is no way out because bullying like this is so very hard to deal with in the workplace. I would encourage you to leave if you can find another job (and definitely drop her right in it at your exit interiew).

I think this is the problem, she’s ok with everyone else, and has took a dislike to me, i can’t figure it out though, she’s even said in one breath how much better it’s running as she’s swapped my role, so surely she should be happy, I mean I didn’t argue with her obviously over the biscuit, but I just felt so belittled, i nervously laughed it off.

Me too

I guess we have to eat them in the staff room

Yes!

CurlewKate · 04/04/2026 22:35

Can you tell us some other examples of the way she’s singling you out?

How come customers come in with food and drinks then when they’re not supposed to?

They’re not being paid to serve customers!

tachetastic · 04/04/2026 22:36

It must be awful to feel picked up, but just to be clear what happened, did a single other member of staff take the food onto the shop floor, or did everyone else finish it in the staff room and you were the only one still eating in front of customers?

LBFseBrom · 04/04/2026 22:37

I'd have thought it was obvious that you don't eat on the shop floor, it looks shabby and careless.

Talks to everyone else and not me, when I received a gift card card for colleague of the month, she said oh we are just waiting for you to leave then we don’t have to give it to you.

Ok I hold my hands up I shouldn’t have eaten a biscuit on the shop floor, but she shouldn’t have belittled me the way she did either

Theirs signs on the door no food and drink allowed, if they ignore surely I can too.

Of course you can't! You are an employee and are expected to act in a professional manner!

That sounds like a poor joke to me. What did anyone else say about it?

If you really are being singled out, others will have noticed.

However eating a biscuit on the shop floor is not a good example, you should have known better.

I’ve seen others eating too, maybe she just didn’t see them

I would say the manager was worse! It's their job (and reflection in pay and position) to manage staff professionally.

She wasn’t laughing when she said it, my other manager just laughed, I just laughed it off but felt stupid,

I worked in retail for years and the rule was you eat in the staff room on your break. Its not exactly rocket science is it!!

Pistachiocake · 04/04/2026 22:42

We were allowed water on hot days in the shop I worked in, but not food-an exception was made for one girl because she had diabetes, so she was allowed when needed. I think if it is necessary for medical reasons, they usually allow it.
She was 17, which I only mention because I have seen people complain about the term "girl" being used.
