I felt humiliated today

At work today my manager brought us some treats in for Easter, I had a biscuit and was eating it on the shop floor, she actually told me off I felt like a naughty school girl, she told me to hide it, I felt so humiliated, this isn’t the first time she’s done things like this, is she bullying me?

OP posts:

To be fair, I'd lick my own arm if it had garlic butter on it.

it is quite tasty

oooooooo i say , ill have to try that method, very mmmmmmmm

Garlic in a tube is your friend for this. Not that I've ever done it....

I think the award came from a different manager.

Oh the one who was making a clumsy joke?

i have been bullied into nearly having a breakdown twice. I have been yelled at in front of people, I have had things thrown at me.

Pulling someone for doing something which is obviously not allowed is not the same.

Perhaps the OP should look for another job as it doesn’t sound like a good fit

I shit you not… it’s heaven. My ex used to make it on a Sunday. Sometimes I miss that man 😊

FFS - you are not supposed to eat on the shop floor in front of customers. What don't you get about that? You can argue it all you like - it takes two minutes, how does it affect the customers etc etc etc. But it's just expected.

The fact you can't or won't grasp that makes me think that you do other unprofessional stuff for which your boss pulls you up on - so no you're probably not being bullied. You sound like a real pain in the ass.

Is it a pissing competition now? Cannot be kinder to someone because you had it worse?

So, if you've experienced bullying, why do you do it when you know how shit it is?

I'm so sorry you experienced that. As you say, being told off for doing something you're not supposed to do is not the same.

No but calling it bullying belittles actual bullying

She did grasp it. She wrote it later on posts that she knows what she did wrong.

Can I ask, did the manager who told her not to on the shop floor in front of customers/fellow staff contribute in making the OP feel bullied?

It's subjective, some people more sensitive than others. Manager pulling someone up in front of people can feel like bullying. I am sorry you can't see that.

murasaki · 05/04/2026 01:30

Maybe she felt bullied, but it was reasonable to call her out on it. Not on the shop floor, but ok to call it. And she needed to stop it there and then. I still think the OP has a victim complex re this manager. Her comments on this thread show she is argumentative at best.

Doesn't mean it is bullying though, does it.

Yes it does. If someone is told off on a shop floor in front of colleagues and customers this literally is a workplace bullying tactic. It is to humiliate and it's been done by someone senior. It's bullying.

This is why it is frown upon.

pinenuts75 · 04/04/2026 22:00

Theirs signs on the door no food and drink allowed, if they ignore surely I can too.

Well you can if you want to.

But then you can’t be surprised when you get told not to… as the key difference here is that you are being paid to work there and the customers are not.

Really odd that you can see the difference…

On occasions that may be the case. But sometimes some people will see any criticism as bullying. And the OP, and indeed you, sound like those people. Work tends to have rules, stick with them, and you'll be fine.

murasaki · 05/04/2026 01:38

If not, they will manage you out. Eventually. And it's not pleasant for them either, as someone who's had to do it.

Are you of legal age to work as in the above you sound about 12.

If you're sock puppeting for the OP, it's a pretty lame effort.

Some would call it "perfetic" 🤭

On occasions, lol. No. No manager, ever, in any type of work should tell a member of staff off in front of colleagues or customers. A good manager will indeed inform the member of staff the errors of their ways away from others. This is basic good management skills that have been around for years. Don't believe me? Try google.

I do find that you want to try and have a pop at me amusing. I don't suppose you'd ever admit you're wrong on this. At least the OP admitted that she was wrong to eat the biccy.... I don't think you'd be as graceful.

JustCabbaggeLooking · 05/04/2026 01:50

I love an unrepentant unreasonable OP😂

murasaki · 05/04/2026 01:51

Oh I totally agree that it should have been done behind the scenes. Definitely, that's basic management practice.

But I don't think one incident like this constitutes bullying. The OP seems to have a victim complex re that manager that we have no way of verifying.

And she was in the wrong. As was the manager. A 1-1 draw.

Calliopespa · 05/04/2026 01:55

pinenuts75 · 04/04/2026 22:04

Why does been a customer give them the right to break rules?

Um... because they are not being paid. The shop exists for their delectation and your job depends on them being happy about coming in so you are not exactly on the same footing. You are there to serve them: that's why a sales assistant is a service industry role.

To be honest I think your manager probably doesn't joke about with you as you seem to take offence and feel easily targeted by things that you should not be feeling so got at over. You cannot go to work and stand round eating when you are not on a break. It is extremely odd that this comes as a surprise to you.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 05/04/2026 02:05

Happyjoe · 05/04/2026 01:29

Why didn't you get out? Why did you put yourself though this? You said for the OP to get another job, why didn't you?

Because I was broken. Not sleeping. Self harming. Suicidal

Hardly in a position to job hunt.
