I felt humiliated today

At work today my manager brought us some treats in for Easter, I had a biscuit and was eating it on the shop floor, she actually told me off I felt like a naughty school girl, she told me to hide it, I felt so humiliated, this isn’t the first time she’s done things like this, is she bullying me?

Telling people off in front of staff and customers is belittling. It's very frowned upon and managers shouldn't do it.
The manager should've pulled her out the back to mention the not eating. That's a good manager.

But there wasn’t anyone around!

OP, your manager is well within her rights to tell you when you are going against company policy. And it doesn’t matter whether or not she likes you.

I don’t really think it’s about the biscuit, to be honest I’m becoming very close to asking her outright if she actually likes me and wants me working there.

Why would you do this ? This is also unprofesional and none productive.

is this your first role or are you a hardened veteran of retail ?

Been there a long time

Why does been a customer give them the right to break rules?

Well for a start they aren't getting paid.
And if you go on the way you are you won't be for much longer either!

Because I want her to explain why she doesn’t like me

bit of advice, do what you believe is best, everyone will have some sort of view you cannot please them all.

Marysnail · 04/04/2026 23:14

What made you say there wasn't anyone around?
And regardless, should've been out the back not on the shop floor.

It was a biscuit

It was food - you were supposed to be working not eating. Doesn't matter if customers eat ior not - you are an employee.

Been there a long time

If you have been there a long time, surely you would know the rules about professional working practice and that you don’t eat when on the shop floor.
From your answers it sounds as though you have a persecution complex whereby you think people/manager is out to get you, and then you give really childish answers about customers ignoring signs about eating.
A grown up thing to do is own the mistake you have made and rectify your behaviour.

10namechangeslater · 04/04/2026 23:23

I don’t see what the big deal is about a biscuit being quickly eaten if no customers are around. I think you’re right OP it sounds like she doesn’t really like you and she definitely shouldn’t be speaking to you in a way that has made you feel humiliated.

You sound like super hard work.
You eat on the floor in front of customers.
There are probably other things you do that look unprofessional if this thread is anything to go by.

I think it's time to find a new role and be a d3frnt employee. Work isn't for being liked it's for getting a job done and if you're standing around eating and God knows what else then you're not a good, reliable employee.

But at the same time, she owes you nothing. She does not have to explain anytjing to you. Reflect on your behaviour for the answer.

She already said staff and customers were present. She said the customers were shopping and minding their own business.

Not sure how it's appropriate or defendable. Maybe you're unprofessional at work too so this sort of thing would be normal.. Who knows. End of the day that store does not want their employees eating on the floor. As is their right to appear as a professional work place.

Sounds like you're a shit entitled immature employee too if you're going to make excuses for this.

Just entitled old her. She has said that.
Other staff members can wait for break time or home time. She can't.
