Is a round of applause when a plane lands lovely or cringe?

I think it's lovely.

Terrible! I fly too and from canada quite a bit and the Canadians love to clap on the plane especially when heading to their all inclusive in the Caribbean!

PoorDollyBantry · 05/04/2026 04:19

I might start clapping myself when I safely park the car at Sainsbury's.

Never heard it in thirty ish years of commercial flying but maybe none of my landings were ever worthy of applause..😨

😂

GCAcademic · 05/04/2026 04:52

The one time people (i.e. sexist pricks) clapped on landing was on a European flight with a female pilot. All the other flights I've had with a female pilot have been in India, and no one on those flights behaved as if a woman flying a plane was something that is beyond normal female capability.

HoraceCope · 05/04/2026 05:15

that happened to me on arrival at Amsterdam,
it was lovely and surprising

Mydogisagentleman · 05/04/2026 05:28

I use Ryanair frequently occasionally Jet2.
Ryanair passengers are more likely to applaud IME.
I don't know whether the pilot can hear them through their reinforced doors.

Newtwopothouse · 05/04/2026 05:45

I think it’s more dependent on the destination than the airline. If it’s a flight to a holiday destination where the passengers are all already on holiday mode and some have been drinking in the airport, applause is way more likely than people flying Dublin-Gatwick on Tuesday morning for a day of meetings.

RedRiverShore6 · 05/04/2026 06:32

I wonder if there was a lot of clapping last night, just looked at the Flightradar thread.

I'm a teensy bit embarrassed for you that you took that ridiculous post seriously.

That's kind of you, but not necessary.

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 05/04/2026 06:36

Why are people so hung up things being cringe. Where is the harm in this? I’ve been on planes where there have been claps and I didn’t think wow you losers I joined in.

I spent last night at an airport hotel because of getting an early flight today, and ran into someone I know who said the applause had been deserved on his flight.

Damnedidont · 05/04/2026 07:03

It doesn't annoy me. I think it's an expression of relief rather than gratitude. After all it's not as if the pilot could save himself,/herself without saving the rest of us.

And why is decorum so very important?

There should be far more decorum these days in my view.

Avantiagain · 05/04/2026 07:13

I have only seen it once when on a Turkish airline landing in Istanbul. The majority of people on board were Turkish. It had been a very good flight and I thought it was nice.

Tryingagainfor2026 · 05/04/2026 07:24

Like the poster above mentioning it being mainly Turkish people on a flight to Istanbul. I have only experienced clapping when I was going to a non touristy country where lots of people on board where from that country so where returning ‘home’ - many, I imagine, not having wanted to ever leave to begin with.
it would be a long flight and people would break out in applause, and cheers. I always found it quite moving. Happiness, relief, gratitude for having got there safely all wrapped up into one.

But I can’t say find people Expressing positive human emotion in any form ‘cringe’.

EvangelinaMae · 05/04/2026 07:27

ChocolateBasket · 04/04/2026 23:07

Cringe. Why do people do it? To say well done to the pilot or relief? Or both?

It's just a little 'woohoo' isn't it? Quite a few posters on MN could do with a bit more woohoo in their lives, there's some right miserable joy suckers on here.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 05/04/2026 07:35

Is it cultural maybe? I remember being surprised by this in my backpacking days 25 years ago. Maybe on Aeroflot?

I have plenty of woohoo in my life thanks, and I don't clap when the plane lands.
But then again I know first hand that pilots train thoroughly for the job and I'm not scared of flying.

WonderingWanda · 05/04/2026 07:49

I've never been through a landing which merited applause but regularly cringe when people do clap at the end of the flight.....shortly before they all fight to stand in the aisle for 10 mins before they open the doors.

Many years ago I had to fly Ryanair to an airport which was only reachable by that airline. The friend picking me up warned me that Ryanair was full of people who "clap when the plane lands" and he wasn't wrong. It seems like behaviour from those who literally never fly or can only afford to fly so occasionally that a plane ride feels like a special event.

Just literally been away on Ryanair. Nobody clapped. Nobody

Nmss · 04/04/2026 21:05

I' ex crew and my ds is a pilot- it's cringe. Also asking crew to announce anything over the PA very cringe, would you ask Tesco, Asda or Aldi to say Happy Birthday/ Happy Anniversay/ congratulations over their PA?!

Sounds like a good idea! Better than the usual plugs for special offers or generic Muzak.

I remember being on a plane once and applause broke out just because we'd crossed the Pyrenees. These over emotional Spanish people who hadn't been home in years I expect.

Ha ha

My teens already know not to give a shiny shit about strangers who don't know them and will never see again think...

What a terrible attitude, and terrible parenting.

Peony1985 · 05/04/2026 08:30

MissCooCooMcgoo · 04/04/2026 20:09

Eh, why not? So little joy in life sometimes. I say we should cheer and clap at more things tbh.

Plenty of time to be miserable when your dead.

Clapping is performative.
It makes everyone’s life more stressful - no one wants to look sneery towards others but equally no one wants to look like a clapping fool.
You can be happy and joyful you’ve landed without making a big show of it.

tnorfotkcab · 05/04/2026 08:32

LastHotel · 05/04/2026 08:24

Why should they care what strangers think?
