Is a round of applause when a plane lands lovely or cringe?

I think it's lovely.

My husband’s flight all clapped a couple of weeks ago when they had to suddenly take a 3 hour detour out of Dubai. Normal flights it’s odd.

Chersfrozenface · 05/04/2026 08:36

..everyone thanks the bus driver here.

I live in that area of the country where it's customary to say "Cheers, drive!" when getting off the bus. I have been known to call out "Cheers, drive!" when exiting the plane through the front door.

I've never clapped, though.

Peony1985 · 05/04/2026 08:38

Obviously I exempt groups 14 year old Italian students from my judgement. Over enthusiasm is to be expected.

AgnesX · 05/04/2026 08:42

Cringe, especially when people have been on the pre-holiday prosecco.

Why are people so hung up things being cringe. Where is the harm in this? I’ve been on planes where there have been claps and I didn’t think wow you losers I joined in.

Haha yeah, I used to live in the Philippines and that was where I first encountered this. They clapped every flight, in and out, I was on and I took it to be a joyful sort of happy thing (not that I’d be the one to start a round on a flight to Malaga) not something to sneer at.

plinkityplink · 05/04/2026 08:46

MissCooCooMcgoo · 04/04/2026 20:09

Eh, why not? So little joy in life sometimes. I say we should cheer and clap at more things tbh.

Plenty of time to be miserable when your dead.

When presumably you’d be happy for people to clap at your funeral when your coffin goes behind the curtain? 🙄

Freysimo · 05/04/2026 08:46

OP, you've asked if it's lovely or cringe to clap then take umbrage when most think it's cringe. Why bother starting thread? It's totally embarrassing cringe BTW.

To me, it says, ‘I’m completely basic and I’ve never been on a plane before’ 😂

This.

Years ago it seemed to be flights to/ from the US with passengers from the USA and then somehow it's transferred over here on flights to tourist destinations.

I want to turn myself inside out with the cringe tbh

No I've taken umbrage to people being snobs about the "povvos", rarely flying, or using Ryanair and other cheaper airlines and how they must have no class or are "completely basic" etc

awayhay · 05/04/2026 08:55

It is cringe, but I think it only happens on the cheaper airlines like Ryanair.

We went on a more expensive flight, with a different airline last year. I am never the type to clap on a flight anyway, but I started clapping because I thought it was what you were meant to do, & NO ONE else clapped.

Musicaltheatremum · 05/04/2026 08:58

TwistedWonder · 04/04/2026 20:54

Agree. And I’ve never seen people thank the bus driver either. Most of them in London would probably give you a death stare if you breath in their direction let alone speak.

In Edinburgh everyone says thank you to the bus driver. There's a great video somewhere of a driver pulling a passenger up for not saying thank you. It's hilarious.
My son in law is a bus driver. I hear his horror stories.

It happens on all sorts of flights. Not just poor people airlines.

It's just a little 'woohoo' isn't it? Quite a few posters on MN could do with a bit more woohoo in their lives, there's some right miserable joy suckers on here.

But does a plane arriving merit a woohoo? And if so, do you also woohoo every time a bus or train stops? After all, far more likely to be in a bus or train accident than a plane crash.

Sausagemagoo · 05/04/2026 09:04

RudePhthaloDalmadoodle · 04/04/2026 20:26

It's customary and expected in some cultures, so a bit xenophobic to categorically label it as "cringe". But it's not common or trad in the UK, so let's say someone did it on a London to Aberdeen flight - I'm more inclined to say it's people who consider it customary, and/or local people who have adopted a custom they've seen elsewhere and like. I'd say it's fine - what harm does it do?

PS - it's not a traditional USA 'thing", but Puerto Ricans (who are mostly US citizens) and a lot of other Latin Americans do it. In Europe, I think it is mostly German, Russian, Italian, or Baltic. Israelis often do it too.

Agree. Jamaicans routinely clap and thank Jesus etc

@tnorfotkcab

Sorry, just realised that I sound like I’m being judgy.

I’m definitely not - I am the poor person using these airlines 🤣

saveforthat · 05/04/2026 09:18

This is spooky because I was on a easyjet flight on Friday when lots of people clapped. When I started flying (1970s) it happened every flight, I haven't heard it for years. I think it's cringey nowadays, unless, as many have said the flight or landing was particularly challenging.

Waitingfordoggo · 05/04/2026 09:29

Makes me cringe. I don’t understand the point of it.

And no I’m not a snob. I’m not well off and can only afford to fly EasyJet or Ryanair. I’m also very scared of flying but I wouldn’t clap - I’m usually too busy crying and telling my husband I will never fly again. 😂

SummerFate · 05/04/2026 09:31

I always think the kind of people who do it are the same people who cheer if a waitress drops a tray of glasses, or say “He’ll never sell any ice cream at that speed” when they hear a police siren. Men who walk around DIY superstores in three-quarter tracksuit bottoms and a football shirt, but might pop a polo shirt on to go to a chain restaurant. Women who share pictures of “my little family” and their friend’s candle making business, and who complain on here about being excluded by the school mum “click”.

Westfacing · 05/04/2026 09:34

I've only experienced it on Middle Eastern and Turkish flights - I joined in!

I think it's not considered a round of applause as such, more an appreciation that the almighty has spared them to live another day

Edited

But when you asked if people thought it was “cringe”, you must have considered that they would share why they think so?

DilemmaDelilah · 05/04/2026 09:40

Very VERY cringe!

There's no need for them to be snobs and disparaging of "poor people"

They can think it's cringe, but they don't need to insult people or insinuate that only poor people do it and they're classless.

Ha ha

My teens already know not to give a shiny shit about strangers who don't know them and will never see again think...

Haha ironic. Why ask what strangers think then?

Natsku · 05/04/2026 09:45

It is cringe but its also kinda lovely. I mean its nice that people show appreciation for things even if it feels a bit cringe to me.

Noisytuxedo · 05/04/2026 09:46

I was on a flight from Toronto to London and surrounded by Dutch teachers and teen students. When the plane landed they all clapped and cheered - I was really confused!

Loads of different nationalities joined in though. Which was sweet. I think it was just the Brits who didn't know what was happening 🤣
