Anyone else staying up to watch the launch to navigate the moon? I didn’t realise until this evening it’s the first launch in 5 decades!

😅😅Loved that album back in the day 😂

They're just epic Floyd fans, that's the reason for going!😊

Apparently it should take four days to get there and four days back.

Thank you 🌷

Chatterlyssecret · 01/04/2026 23:49

Good to see its now in Earth orbit safely.

They just said orbiting the world for a day to check all is ok and they will reach the moon on day 6

Jupiterx · 01/04/2026 23:50

Is it going further than the last one, like past the moon.

What time is it there? It's midnight here

It launched around 6:35 ish.

PonyPrancing · 01/04/2026 23:50

Wow, The views from the onboard cameras are incredible.

If anyone is interested the channel AstronautiCAST on YouTube post footage of Earth recorded from the ISS very regularly. I love watching them, especially when passing over the UK. But then I wave at the ISS when I get to see her pass over 😆🛰️

That was exciting. I lived in Florida in the early 80’s, near the Kennedy Space Centre and saw shuttles go up from the VIP stand and from the back garden. It’s so exciting. The astronauts are braver than I am.

im glad I stayed up to watch.

Shitmonger · 01/04/2026 23:52

Also for whoever asked, I believe the purposes of this launch are both to test all the new tech/systems/equipment and to scout the moon for future landing sites.

Rinoachicken · 01/04/2026 23:53

It’s incredible engineering - that it goes straight up, doesn’t hit the tower, doesn’t fall over - I’m quite a simple person so I don’t understand how they do any of it. Incredible.

Also it's navigated it's way through all the junk up there which wasn't there back at the start of space travel

Apparently yes.

what I love is Space x struggles to get a rocket up without it exploding and NASA goes hold my coat.

Just watching it, did go outside like some idiot thinking maybe i just might see something in the syk.
Yes im that stupid.

Not stupid Jupiter. I Googled earlier to see if we could see anything from here in the UK but sadly not for this mission.

A few years ago I did get to see a Dragon X flight from here in the UK. It passed over just a few minutes after the ISS on a night when conditions where perfect to seee it and I was in Somerset on the edge of Exmoor. I have a short video of it on my old phone somewhere.

Never heard of AstronautiCAST before your post! - sounds fascinating - thanks for that.

tryingtobesogood · 01/04/2026 23:57

Not all humans are within Earth’s atmosphere tonight.

No we have been around the moon before, as they orbited as part of the Apollo missions, but we haven't been around the moon since '72.

Quick shout-out to recent Indian and Chinese missions that have orbited and/or landed on the moon and even returned materials, but unmanned, since Apollo. This is super exciting of course but let's not forget non-US moon exploration! I enjoyed the launch just now.

Im so in to all this space stuff.
Hated it as a child but love it now.

JumpinJehoshaphat · 01/04/2026 23:47

Amazing!

We have a holiday house over on the Gulf of Mexico. If the skies are clear, we can see the trail of shuttle launches. I’m gutted we’re not there to see this historic moment.

We’re in the Gulf of Mexico at the moment but sadly too cloudy where we are to see any trails in the sky! Very exciting to watch though regardless, being so close to the action!

Yeah, that's a bizarre thought!

ArtAngel · 01/04/2026 23:59

How did I miss this?
Kicking myself!

tryingtobesogood · 01/04/2026 23:59

Mind you, there are people on the ISS so I guess it’s not just tonight 🤦‍♀️
