Anyone else staying up to watch the launch to navigate the moon? I didn’t realise until this evening it’s the first launch in 5 decades!

Having watched the first moon landing, I thought it appropriate to watch the launch tonight, I wish them well.

While it's sometimes hard to "see the point", the same accusation was made of the moon landings, which ultimately led to the USA's global domination in microelectronics, software and the internet etc.

Spaghettea · 01/04/2026 23:32

you I think it's a practice trip prior to building a moon base. "Little" warm up as we're quite rusty.

icebearforpresident · 01/04/2026 23:32

It’s getting tense.

The guy doing to voiceover for the nasa stream is excellent at explaining all this.

I'd be pooping myself if I was on that

What are they actually doing going to the moon?

Technically they are not going to “to” the moon (as in landing on it).

This mission is a precursor (probably the first of several) to that objective in that they will be orbiting the moon to test the technology for that aspect of a full moon mission ie the journey, before dealing with the technology of a moon landing.

If you are asking why would we want to land on the moon again in the future, well there’s the obvious aspect of space exploration leading up even more complicated missions such as Mars, but also scientific study/knowlege and potential commercial benefits in the (very) long term around mineral deposits and production in low/nil gravity environments.

It was the year I was born!

Unfortunately I can remember Sputnik 1 as well, the very first satellite launched.

BePoisedPlumUser · 01/04/2026 23:34

Yes! Very exciting!

He's funny though. He might as well be narrating someone cooking! No excitement in his voice.

Jesus 39 seconds

FluffyDiplodocus · 01/04/2026 23:35

Also watching! So cool!

Spaghettea · 01/04/2026 23:35

Most of that massive rocket is just fuel isn't it? It'll fall off after 30 seconds?

Moon30 · 01/04/2026 23:35

First I've heard of it 😳

todayImstruggling · 01/04/2026 23:36

Liftoff!

Nuffpills · 01/04/2026 23:37

Wow 😮

nunsflipflop · 01/04/2026 23:37

Wow, just wow. This isn’t normally my thing but my late dad would have loved it, so watching for him

The thought of it is making me feel a bit queasy, I don't even like flying on a plane - I can't imagine being thrust into space at 5000mph!

McChubble · 01/04/2026 23:40

Fantastic. There are some incredibly clever people out there

Shadesofscarlett · 01/04/2026 23:40

amazing to watch. My old dad stayed up to watch the first one with my elder brother, who was weeks old. Am loving the on board footage of it all
