Anyone else staying up to watch the launch to navigate the moon? I didn’t realise until this evening it’s the first launch in 5 decades!

I think this mission is to go around the moon and see the other side that has never been seen..apologies if I am wrong 😑

It is to go round the moon to look at the other side.

Artemis IV in 2028 is the mission that is proposed to be the next manned mission to land on the moon.

This is so exciting. I'm absolutely fascinated by astronomy and space travel. I've been watching all the preparations and will be following this mission.
There's a great programme on iPlayer by Maggie Aderin Pocock "Why we need the Moon" which was really informative about the importance of the moon to our planet.

Can you imagine being on board? Looking out as the Earth gets further away?.

MyCrushWithEyeliner · 02/04/2026 00:01

That was great. We’re all so insignificant when you think how vast the universe is.

ILoveDaffodills · 01/04/2026 23:58

Yeah, that's a bizarre thought!

Don't forget the 7 people living on the international space station...

Absolutely!

NOT. No thanks! I hit 50 & some bastard stole my bottle!🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

I just tried it but my grip on foreign languages isn't good enough 🥹

Look on their channel for ISS Timelapse videos. There’s no talking on those, just relaxing music. I love watching one or two before I go to bed.

I have their latest one on now, posted 7 hours ago and recorded on 01 Mar 2026.

They are the Italian team equivalent of NASA so do have some talking videos on there but most are the ISS Timelapses.

I realised that after I posted 🤦‍♀️😂

I know. You look at the Earth and think, we're just another spinning rock ...

True. I think I'd never thought of it as 'some humans not being in the earths atmosphere' it just sounds so... .....

I'm not likely to be on the reserve list for Artemis any time soon....maths=questionable, travel sickness= permanent, anxiety and propensity to be fine until a last minute panic attack= unpredictable

Oh right, thanks. I will 😊

I'm sitting in a caravan in Devon with my 8yo. He was asleep, woke him with 30 minutes to go, but he could barely keep his eyes open. I was an emotional wreck! I was gripping his hand and weeping for about 10 minutes! What a fantastic parting: we are going for our families, we are going for our teammates, we are going for all humanity. 😭

Is it going further than the last one, like past the moon.

Yes. To date, Apollo 13 was the craft that went furthest from earth because they didn't go into lunar orbit. They simply slingshot round the back of the moon and came straight back to earth. Artemis will go even further beyond the moon.

Maggie A-P fangirling little bit ❤️

weareallqueens · 02/04/2026 00:07

DD (8) was desperate to watch it so I stayed up way past my usual bedtime, crept into her room with my phone for her to watch a couple of minutes before the launch - ‘too tired’. So I watched it on my own (with my heart in my mouth) and will be knackered in the morning.

JaneyDC · 02/04/2026 00:07

The NASA guy commentating every step of the way had the most beautiful, calm and intelligent voice. He was locked in and was made for this moment!

Amazing launch. Can't wait to show my space obsessed son tomorrow.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/04/2026 00:07

I found it bizarrely incredibly nostalgic when the nasa people and astronauts were talking - took me right back to being 8 sat up at my granny’s with crisps and pop watching Apollo 11 in 1969

Excellent. I genuinely didn't know about the Earth being as it is because of the Moon. Eventually a station there, mineral mining, solar panels, stop off for Mars...such incredible opportunities.

I woke my DC up for a few mins at T= -5 (space obsessed) luckily back down now, I was worried it would lead to midnight chaos
