Do you still have the heating on?

As in, you haven’t turned it off for the ‘year’ yet?

My house is currently 14c but I don’t usually have it on at the time of year - after the spring equinox I don’t usually need to. But it does feel colder than usual.

Appreciate people more north probably do need it on for longer though.

I would but it’s oil heating and trying to make it last due to the astronomical cost at the moment.
Jumpers, blankets at the moment but still feel cold. Arthritis kicking off too so feel a bit miserable.

Same here x

Redflagsabounded · 29/03/2026 17:18

Yes, on a thermostat for 17⁰ day, 20⁰ evening and 11⁰ overnight. Still clicking itself on and off. I was out early yesterday morning and it was only 4⁰ out.

Miyagi99 · 29/03/2026 17:43

No but I have an electric blanket on the sofa on if I watch television in the evening and a small heater which I put on if it’s really cold while I’m working. But I also have the windows open most of the day now to freshen up after winter.

That is very unusual. How on earth do you cope at work, in public buildings or in summer?

The NHS recommended temperature for health is 18 degrees.

I cope just fine. I've been like this all my life. I prefer a steady 14 degrees to anything warmer, and once it's up to 18 or so I start to feel uncomfortably warm and usually end up sitting in my underwear next to an open window.

What the NHS recommends is neither here nor there really because I'm not about to sit sweating my tits off just because some website states an arbitrary figure.

Our thermostat is set to 18.5 from 6.30am - 10pm and 15.5 degrees during the night. Heating stays ‘on’ 365 days of the year so kicks into action once the temp in the house drops below those levels as long as someone is home. I do turn it down a couple of degrees during the day sometimes if there’s only me in as I can’t justify heating the whole house - especially this time of year - but I often also pop it up a couple of degrees over the 18.5 whenever it’s needed once the family is home.

At the moment the heating is very much on!!

voidcatsarethebest · 29/03/2026 18:37

It comes on if it drops below 15c. My work is rarely above that so it’s the temp I’m used to

MildlyAnnoyed · 29/03/2026 18:41

No it’s not on. I’m on oil fired heating & the price is through the roof so cold or not, it’s not going on.

Greentea4 · 29/03/2026 18:42

I have it set to 18 degrees constantly.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 29/03/2026 19:22

It's been off since the bellend that is Trump decided that his latest project would be to invade Iran.

We have enough oil for hot water but the heating is off and only the log burners are being used.

That made me 😃..I'm in the same predicament. I've just ran out of heating oil and can't afford to refill as the oil company has a minimum order which I just can't afford 🙃

goldingoose · 29/03/2026 19:26

Yes, our household gets up at 5am so it's on at 22 degrees until 10am then it's set at 19 degrees so if it does get cold it comes on again. (SE England). Not really needed as house is v well insulated.

We have thermostats so that when it reaches temperature it switches off.

NoSoupForU · 29/03/2026 20:41

I don't turn it off. The thermostat is set so it comes on if it needs to. I never understand the weird fixation with the calendar being the driving factor in whether to have the heating on, rather than the temperature.

Usernamenotav · 29/03/2026 20:44

I dont turn it off. It's set to 19, if It drops below that it it heats, if not, it doesn't. I never monitor it.

Denim4ever · 29/03/2026 20:50

Nourishinghandcream · 28/03/2026 10:30

Our heating comes on when required, we don't set arbitrary dates when "heating needs to be on" or "heating must go off". It there is a cold spell, the heating comes on and if it is warm (like last week) then it doesn't come on.

This, if it's cold - below 16 - it comes on

Ladypartsproblem · 29/03/2026 20:58

Yes we had sleet/snow earlier in the week and it’s freezing today due to high winds and rain.

GardenCovent · 29/03/2026 21:02

Absolutely. We’ve had hailstones today and it is bitterly cold.
In Scotland in a house built in 1900 with no insulation whatsoever

RosesAndHellebores · 29/03/2026 21:05

Ours is set to about 17.5. We don't turn it off. It comes on 5.30 to 8am and 5.30 to 10.30pm. If we are in during the day we switch on the zone we're in. Generally if we get cold we put a sweater on.

Allseeingallknowing · 29/03/2026 21:07

Yes it’s turned cold. Raining and windy here.

catipuss · 29/03/2026 21:08

Yes, bloody freezing here today, and I lit the open fire too.

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 29/03/2026 22:14

Seems to be a big difference here between people on mains energy who can have the heating on and those of us with oil who have very little if any choice but to turn the heating off.

At least it is March and not November but it is fucking annoying.

My heat pumps use electricity. I’m in Maine which has the highest take up of heat pumps in the US, partly because people here don’t have the option of mains gas and hate relying on heating oil.

I’m really happy with them. The electricity is from a solar farm so I’m reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.

Viviennemary · 29/03/2026 22:50

Yes. I'm not being cold. I'd rather cut back on other things if I have too. Like private school fees or designer bags

PinkNailPolish2026 · 29/03/2026 23:00

We’ve had snow showers the past few days and the wind has been bitter. Our thermostats are set to 20 but rarely come on as we have the log burners on in three rooms most days, we tend to live in the back kitchen at this time of year as it’s lambing season. We have two kitchens, a “working” kitchen (back kitchen) and our kitchen, quite often we have orphaned lambs in the back kitchen to warm them up so it needs to be kept warm for them.

riversflows · 29/03/2026 23:08

I turned it off at the end of February

MrsAmaretto · 29/03/2026 23:17

Yes, there was snow on the ground this week and it’s been hailey showers today. My thermostat is set to 17- 21 degrees depending on which room and time of day.
