Do you still have the heating on?

As in, you haven’t turned it off for the ‘year’ yet?

My house is currently 14c but I don’t usually have it on at the time of year - after the spring equinox I don’t usually need to. But it does feel colder than usual.

Appreciate people more north probably do need it on for longer though.

Refuse to sit cold so yes its on and will stay on until the Weather improves. There's never a set date when it stays off.

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/03/2026 10:44

I do. It was -1 yesterday morning here in Central Scotland. I never turn the heating ‘off for the summer/year’, I find the idea madness given how changeable it can be. If I’m cold, the heating goes on, end of.

FernandoSor · 28/03/2026 10:47

I don’t get this turning the heating on and off. Surely most people have a timer thermostat? Ours is set to 17 during the day and off at night. The only time it gets touched is when the clocks change.

And yes it’s has been coming on every day because it’s still cold (overnight frosts the past few nights).

Most people probably have a timer and thermostat. However, many people never take the time to learn how to use them, and use the thermostat as a glorified on/off switch to turn the heating on when they feel cold.

EmbarrassmentLovesCompany · 28/03/2026 10:51

It snowed last week!

The heating is still kicking in - the thermostat deals with that. I have turned it down slightly since trump caused the prices to spike (yes, my prices have changed already).

Twasasurprise · 28/03/2026 10:54

It comes on with the thermostat. Yes, it is on currently.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/03/2026 10:54

I haven’t had it on since the cold snap in January / February (when was it? This whole winter is just one big blur of dark dampness!). I live in a well insulated flat. Even then it was just a half hour boost to take a chill off.

14 degrees 😱. I prefer the temp in my house to remain at 20 degrees. I did turn off the heating when we had that blast of warm weather but it’s now back on.

Seawolves · 28/03/2026 10:57

Mine comes on when it drops below 21° in the house, it was snowing here when we came out of hospital at 1.30am one night this week and even in the day time the outside temperature is still chilly most days.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/03/2026 11:09

Yes - on Thursday there was lying snow in the morning, it’s still cold!

I don't use the timer because the weather and temperature can vary wildly from day to day. And I don't rely on the thermostat because it's located in the hall and doesn't take account of solar gain in parts of the house.

SpaceRaccoon · 28/03/2026 11:10

I never turn mine off, really. The thermostat sorts it. If it comes on then it needs to be on.

Our heating is thermostatically controlled it comes on when the temperature dictates, not the calendar.
We live on the edge of the Pennines and the heating is on.

Our bills and carbon footprint are offset by our solar panels and we hate being cold. We are wearing warm jumpers in case anyone tells me to "just put a jumper on".

LifeIsShambolic · 28/03/2026 11:25

Mine hasn't been on for the whole winter 💪....because I have a coal fire I the kitchen that keeps the whole house at a toasty 18 ish degrees!

ValidPistachio · 28/03/2026 10:39

The Moray Firth area.

Ahhhh

i love it when it snows (I used to live in the French Alps). We've only had a few days of very light snow down here this year. It's just been wet & relentlessly grey.

it was so cold when I put the washing out & SO SO windy, very difficult with my limited ability after the stroke (but grateful I'm still able to do it!). Hoping the wind pulling it around diesnt make holes in the sheets 🙄

🤢 I'd love a proper fire again.

though have to say, since the stroke, am very grateful for just a few taps of buttons on thermostat to stay warm.

I had to replace my thermostat & it's not as easy to program as the old one. At the moment (since the stroke) I'm home a lot & not out for ling periods, so I just put it up to 21.5° in the morning & off overnight.

but before the stroke when I was working I had it programmed to come on to warm up before I got home etc.

PlantsAndSpaniels · 28/03/2026 12:13

Mines set automatic for the temperature we want the house at all year round. I havent bumped it on recently but we have had the odd fire if its been really cold.

DilemmaDelilah · 28/03/2026 12:15

It's cold! I still have mine on.

Netcurtainnelly · 28/03/2026 12:19

Yes we do. Look forward to having it on less though.

mindutopia · 28/03/2026 12:30

We’ve maybe turned it on 5 times in the last month. I don’t really want to refill the tank at these prices. We’re having building works done so there is a constant draught and any warmth just goes right out the hole in the house! No point just burning through money and not even being warm. Our house is consistently about 13c, but I almost never have it above 15/16c anyway. On the few really cold days, we’ve lit a fire, but that’s it.

Satarn · 28/03/2026 12:34

No turned it off 2 year ago, had the gas disconnect.
I have a small electric heater if it get too cold.
But other than that no, I get too hot and I hate that stuffy feeling indoors windows must be open.

SpecialAgentMaggieBell · 28/03/2026 12:36

First thing in the morning for an hour, yes. It's still freezing here, with exeption of a few warm days last week.

Tel12 · 28/03/2026 12:38

Yes. The stat is set at 20c so I don't really care what time of year it is, if it's cold it's cold.

MiddleAgedDread · 28/03/2026 12:38

We had frost earlier this week so yes, it’s still on timer morning and evening and set to kick in if it drops below 14 overnight and 16 during the day. although i need it at 18 on days i work from home.
