Do you still have the heating on?

As in, you haven’t turned it off for the ‘year’ yet?

My house is currently 14c but I don’t usually have it on at the time of year - after the spring equinox I don’t usually need to. But it does feel colder than usual.

Appreciate people more north probably do need it on for longer though.

I turned it off last weekend, but put it back on again on Wednesday. I only have it in for an hour in the morning and an hour at night anyway, but might boost a little if it’s below 5.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 28/03/2026 15:02

it is freezing here today. I am wearing jeans, sweater, two pairs of fluffy socks, gilet and a hat. I’ve just turned the heating on, nearly x husband is rating about how no one needs heating on in March. I don’t care if it’s August, if I’m cold I’m putting it on. It’s not a cost issue for us it’s a him being a prick issue.

roses2 · 28/03/2026 15:04

I leave my thermostat set to 15' every morning and evening all year round (it's off during the day and at night) and it's been on several times this week. It's in the coldest room in the house (meaning other rooms will be 18-19' when the heating kicks in ) and I can't be bothered switching it on/off for summer and winter so just set the temperature I want and leave it at that.

It was off half of winter! My gas bill was only £120 for January (4 bed 3 storey mid terraced house)

YouDriveMeCrazyButICanDoThatMyself · 28/03/2026 15:15

Yes.
I had to scrape the car windscreen before work yesterday, and we’ve had hailstones today. However, the heating thermostat stays on 15-16 degrees all winter (thermometer says this room is currently 19 degrees) and it’s only on a max of 4 hrs a day.

tinyspiny · 28/03/2026 15:18

We do but in honesty I would turn it up in July / August if I felt chilly , I’m not sure we’ve had a whole day here yet (SE) where I’ve not turned it on but my Raynauds has been terrible this year .

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/03/2026 15:18

Of course - it’s cold! Hailstones here today!

JugglingMyNuts · 28/03/2026 15:22

Ours is on all year round but only cuts in when it gets below 17degrees at night and 18 in the day. But the house is well insulated so even when it’s 2 degrees outside it only cuts in for about an hour each day.

cadburyegg · 28/03/2026 15:33

Yes definitely. I don’t turn it off anyway unless we are away, i just leave it controlled by the thermostat which usually stops turning on in the morning by around May / last frost date.

ifonly4 · 28/03/2026 15:57

Ours is set on it's usual temperature of 18c on timed. Still coming on in the morning, but it hasn't come on at teatime for about nine days. Hasn't been freezing here, but we've had a few mornings when I can see slight frost on our extension (from bedroom window).

Gwenhwyfar · 28/03/2026 16:03

Yes, of course. It's only March. It would be 16 or 17 degrees without the heating on and I need at least 20.

I would too, except that I can't because my neighbours switch it off for the summer for the whole building.

Villanousvillans · 28/03/2026 16:05

It’s been hailing here today. I’ve had the heating on.

pointythings · 28/03/2026 16:27

Mine is still on. It isn't reliably warm enough to set my thermostat to 'sod you, it's summer' temperature.

Hiddenhouse · 28/03/2026 16:30

Absolutely - we’re all home and it’s cold. I’m not walking around looking at my breath inside

caringcarer · 28/03/2026 16:34

I've only had mine on for a couple of hours in the evenings for about last week or so. I'm still having my heated throw though.

Same, I have Raynaud's and put it on whenever I need, not according to month.

Everybodys · 28/03/2026 16:37

Northern. Ours is one of the systems where you set it to go on below a certain temperature. I think it's 14 degrees overnight and 17 or 18 in the day. We've had multiple false springs in the last month, so it's been dipping on and off around that.

Tippexy · 28/03/2026 16:54

We don’t turn it on or off for arbitrary dates…

Ineffable23 · 28/03/2026 16:55

It lives on the thermostat, if I've seemed it cold enough for heating in the winter it's cold enough in the spring or summer. In any case it hailed today and there was a frost on, I think, Thursday.

maddiemookins16mum · 28/03/2026 16:56

Yes. Not for long but when needed. I refuse to be cold.

NFPorterkeeponkeepingonNsoul · 28/03/2026 17:00

No but heated fleece blanket each ..two of us.

GoldMoon · 28/03/2026 17:00

Yes and we 've still been lighting the woodburner, have lit it now . Also sit in the evening with a fleece blanket over my legs plus my oddie on over my clothes
We are just a few miles from the Scottish borders .

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 28/03/2026 17:00

Yes, it's been hail and snow here today.

Notanotherpairofsocks · 28/03/2026 17:08

I somehow switched the heating off last night, so this morning it was 9 dgs bloody cold.

Currently have the multifuel buner on, cheaper than putting the full system on which is oil heating. It's being used sparingly but I have a new boiler and it's more efficient.

If it's cold it has to go on, no matter what month it is.

NoWordForFluffy · 28/03/2026 17:30

Nourishinghandcream · 28/03/2026 10:30

Our heating comes on when required, we don't set arbitrary dates when "heating needs to be on" or "heating must go off". It there is a cold spell, the heating comes on and if it is warm (like last week) then it doesn't come on.

This is us too!
