A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙* *

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Thanks for good wishes. Was a bit cocky on Monday, overdid it so dug out the hospital painkillers. Today the cleaner came so did a bit but wisely retired to bed this afternoon with painkillers and had a nap.

I got there with the first hip so I can do it again with the second.

SapphireCasino · 26/03/2026 23:00

@justasking111 glad you're okay
Did you say you did some gardening on Monday? I might have imagined that, but I remember being a bit confused. I was doing a very speedy catch up after being away so I might have got my posts confused. Get some rest. You will get there for sure.

@TheNuthatch oh I didn't know local anaesthetic causing issues was a thing. I was puzzled by the implant comment as well. This dentist doesn't do them so he's not going to make money if I have one. Looking online, AI seems to agree. I swear they make these things look easier than they actually are!

In nice news, the people at Proud of Us are going to be producing a book. I look forward to that. Still curious to know who's behind it.

TheNuthatch · 27/03/2026 08:52

Good morning. 😁 TFI Friday.

After another disastrous interview by John Healy where he didn't know how many ships the navy has, the DT reporting that Al Carns - armed forced minister, has been blocked from seeing the elusive defence investment plan. This is due to his 'independent mindedness' apparently. Nothing to do with Carns being a popular leadership contender, obv. Carns hasn't denied the claim.

The FT reporting that Sadiq Khan is about to be elevated to the Lords, with a view to taking a position in cabinet as part of yet another reset. I thought Sir Flip-Flop wanted to abolish the HoL?
Maybe Starmer will give Burnham a peerage too - not. 😂

Khan in the cabinet? Blimey. I wonder if that’s a Rayner condition. They really are clowns.

EasternStandard · 27/03/2026 09:05

And haha about Carns and his independent mindedness, sounds like a plus with this lot.

A plus to those outside Labour. Strongly discouraged within. Our Labour MP is a total yes man, it's so frustrating.

A new poll suggests huge losses for Labour in May, and huge gains for Reform.
A projection by Prof Stephen Fisher, an elections expert at Oxford University, suggested Labour would suffer a net loss of 1,900 councillors.Reform UK was projected to sweep the board for a second year in a row and gain 2,260 councillors, boosting Nigel Farage’s chances of taking power.

Good. Let’s hope they finally get the hint.

If that happens it’ll be interesting to see how they square an incoming shift to the left.

This Telegraph pic of the PM meeting pupils in West Dulwich today is a corker. I think we all know how that little girl at the front feels 😂

Yes, good point. It doesn't fit with a shift to the left does it.

New poll in London - Greens miles ahead in first place (36%), Labour and Reform almost tied for second (22% and 20%).

This is a GE poll that asked who you'd vote for if you weren't tactically voting, so could be relevant for the next mayoral election.

Laila Cunningham is still favourite to be the next mayor but could it be one of the Greens? Rosena Allin-Khan is also now nearly on the same odds as Sadiq Khan to be the Labour candidate.

And what on earth is going on in London?

TheNuthatch · 27/03/2026 12:32

Starmer has given a long form interview to Beth Rigby's podcast.
I don't think I can do it. 😬

I can't stand the Greens, but secretly hoping that ZP wins Starmer's seat at the GE. 😁
Perhaps your stats explain the reports of Khan getting a peerage.

"And what on earth is going on in London?"

Well, the Greens campaign on issues such as Gaza. That's appealling to a certain demographic...

Nurse! @TheNuthatch needs her medication.

Anyone but ZP (within reason, that is).

@ProudAmberTurtle "And what on earth is going on in London"

that's a really nice username, but I think it was probably an automatic suggestion was it? I like the idea of a proud amber turtle 😊

As for what's going on in London. I did really need to leave. I respect people's right to want what they want so to speak. But what Londoners seemed to want for London wasn't what I wanted at all.

I don't think I'm a city person and cities seem to be going one way. That way is left obviously.

I'm actually dithering about going to an event by the New Culture Forum but not sure I can be bothered with the travel. Again, it's purely to feel a bit less isolated in my views. Having said that, I've now had a little bit more open discussion with the people I know locally and I don't feel so isolated but I still wouldn't engage in a political conversation really. People you see on a night out just for fun, best to keep it light.

I suppose it's because politics has become so much of people's identity, it suddenly feels important to know people who are on the same page.

I don't really know why Sadiq Khan would be a candidate for the Lords but I suppose he has done extremely well in terms of furthering a Labour agenda in London.

I did have a colleague say to me "what happened to London? Why is it suddenly such a dump? It used to be so glamorous". I would argue that it's not sudden. Also, that kind of old-fashioned glamour that she likes is probably gone at the moment anyway. I suspect that's true the world over? But she is very much the kind of person who would support a leftist agenda - I'm going to guess that she would vote Green - but she wouldn't see the cultural effect of that.

Perhaps I'm just losing my ability to articulate these things well but I do think that it is hard to explain. I mean, there isn't a reason why everything has to be an ugly design, for example. There isn't a reason that a particular type of politician would go in for that.

I don't think Boris Johnson did London any favours either. One of the first things I ranted about on here was the Garden Bridge. After it was defeated, I realised that he probably never intended to build it - he probably knew about the practical problems all along but it was just a way to line the pockets of whoever he was in with. The disruption to the views was absolutely criminal as well. It was one of my major objections to the plan. I'm still convinced a lot of people who supported it hadn't really looked at it or thought about it.

In terms of some of the polling this is the summary of Council by-elections that have taken place in England from start of this year through to the four held yesterday. Only 23 contests, and none in large cities, however a decent cross-section across England. Just under 50,000 votes cast.

Reform 25.8%
Conservative 20.5%
Green 17.5%
Labour 16.1%
Lib Dem 15.0%
independents and others 5.0%

boys3 · 27/03/2026 16:29

That should have read 27 rather than 23 by-elections.

Labour

  • didn’t even stand a candidate in 5 of them.
  • got less than 5% of the vote in another 5
  • between 5 and 15% in another 5
  • Up to 25% accounts for 6 more
  • 4 managed 25 to 30%
  • just 2 over 30%

Greens

  • stood in 25 of those seats, interestingly more than Labour
  • got less than 10% in 12 of them
  • up to 20% in another 5
  • up to 30% in 4 more
  • then in the remaining four 32%, 44%, 45%, 67%. So piling up a decent number of votes in a relatively small number of seats.
boys3 · 27/03/2026 16:38

Lib Dems a fairly similar profile to the Greens, only 1 seat without a candidate

  • 11 with less than 10% of the vote
  • 7 where it polled over 35.%

Conservatives

stood a candidate in every seat

  • 11 got 10% or less
  • 8 over 30%, with 6 in the 39% to 54% range

Reform

stood in every seat

  • 2 less than 10%
  • 7 in the 10% to 20% range
  • 16 over 25% of which
  • 8 between 35% and 52%
boys3 · 27/03/2026 16:45

In terms of seats won

Reform 7
Conservative 7
Lib Dem 6
Green 4
Labour 3
Independents & Others 0

EasternStandard · 27/03/2026 16:47

Thanks for the info @boys3good to see Labour drop, even though it’s not cities.
