Things people do to show that more money than sense

I’ll start
. People who spend 40-70p on a carrier bag then use it for rubbish.
. People who buy those number plates which have multi colours, lettering has glitter on them. Not road legal

designer handbags and very expensive watches.
I don’t get it. Except to have an outward symbol of wealth to stroke your ego with…

DM lives in a village in Yorkshire that's insufficiently affluent to make the MN approved list of places to live and there's at least one garden telephone box and two antique postboxes.

I agree with @Nanda66 about luggage. See also things like shoes and household items. I know there's an element of 'you get what you pay for' where some very cheap things are flimsy rubbish but you often don't have to go far up the price scale for things to be perfectly nice, good quality, well designed etc so beyond that, what are you paying for? The satisfaction that you can afford a £1300 suitcase? I'd rather have one for a tenth of that price and spend the rest of the money on something else.

I agree that taking young kids on holiday can be a lovely experience, seeing them having fun is the best. However I have to say, taking a baby to Euro Disney is insane! Unless of course, the trip is more for you and your partner and the baby’s just coming with you. But if it’s all for him..he won’t even know he’s there, won’t be able to go on any rides (and neither will you). I’d seriously be thinking about saving that trip for a few years. I took my 4 yo and I’d say that was a great age. It was magical for her, she could go on most of the rides, she knew who all the Disney characters were in the parades, and loved the Frozen theatre shows

Its £300 for train, tickets and hotel. Why would I need to save £300. We are there for 2 days so dont think we can spend that much on food.

He will go again in a couple of years as well when he is paying (and older). I think he will be able to go on its a small world.

We took him to willow activity farm for mothers day (he and I were both free). While he couldn't go in the adventure playground or do the rides other than the merry go round, he loved petting the guinea pig and looking at the animals and playing in the soft play.

I do believe positive and varied encounters this age will aid his development.

What the 'old bangers' crowd on here always fail to recognise that the main reason they are happy with a cheap old car us because they can afford to live on walking and cycling distance of amenities and work or can WFH. And in places where they can actually leave a bike with basic security without it getting stolen.

They have no concept at all about needing a car to drive to work 20 miles away because they can't afford to live any closer and if there is public transport its connections and takes much longer than driving.

I will confess this is me! I am smug about my ten year old car with no payments and very limited maintenance. But I do about 2,000 miles a year and live in a city - can walk everywhere including work. Street is full of very very expensive cars - mine stands out for being a bit crap.

Get their oven cleaned professionally instead of scrubbing it themselves like the rest of us paupers 🤣

The money I once forked out for someone to clean my filthy oven was the best £45 I ever spent.

But I had to admire a colleague’s sister, who didn’t bother getting anyone in to clean her filthy oven - she just bought a new one instead. 😂

Anyway can waste money. It's nothing to do with this. Quite a weird perspective.

Spend £££ on designer clothes for babies. BAFFLES ME, they grow so quick! (if you can afford it, fair play, but it still makes no sense to me!).

I often wonder if they're fakes and it's just for the clout lol

Took my kids to DLP when they were 10 months and 2 years old. Had a blast. They don't remember it but we do. Dress baby up and you'll get more attention from cast members too 🤣. My son was dressed as Tigger and he went to queue back up for Dumbo, and the CM let him go straight back on.

Also euro Disney isn't the term anymore cause the french found it quite offensive iirc lol. Have a great time!! 🖤

LuckyManifestations · 17/03/2026 10:26

Im guilty of lots of these thing Blush

I buy things if I want them regardless of whether they are worth the money, I will buy a drink when out and about because Im too lazy to fill one of my many water bottles from home, I replace domestic appliances rather than have the hassle of getting them fixed, and throw away A LOT of food if it can't be donated.

However I do buy at least £20 of food for the food bank box every time I shop, and donate regulary to many charities.

My example is a mum at my eldest DD's high school who employed two nannies for her 13 year old twins because 'they wanted one each'!

Ubugly · 17/03/2026 10:58

I think most people waste to much money. Charity shops are bulging and some refuse donations as to full. Ebay, vinted, Facebook market place, you literally cant give stuff away. Whenever you go to the dump it is heaving with people chucking rubbish of course but okay stuff.
Landfill is obscene.
People's houses are just full of un needed stuff, look at the volumes of clothes people have. The list goes on and on.

Food waste is another. And I am not saying any of this isn't me 😬

Some people are taking this thread far too seriously!

I get my oven clean professionally about once a year because they do such a great job and take it all apart and get to the bits that my average scrubbing clean doesn't reach. The rest of the year it's rubber gloves on and in with the Oven Mate spray. 😄

This just makes no sense. Or maybe I’m misunderstanding and your argument isn’t that you are an average earner? Because if it is, what you seem to be saying is average earners buy brand new EVs, have fancy home entertainment systems, all the kitchen gadgets etc. Firstly, that’s not true. There’s no way I could afford a new car, on average i buy cars that are around 5 yrs old. Normal people who buy new cars get them on finance. Same with iPhones & Macs, they’re paid for on monthly contracts. Secondly, having a high-quality EV, a home entertainment system & the latest Mac can dramatically improve your day-to-day life, an improvement that lasts for many years to come. Also the EV is so much better for the planet. And the cost of having children really cannot be compared to the cost of a first class flight 🤣. The first class flight is thousands of pounds just to have some free champagne in a fancy glass & a bed rather a seat for a few hours. You would rather drive an old car, risking regular breakdowns & polluting the planet, have a slow computer that keeps crashing, put up with the slightly muffled tv speakers (rather than say, buying a sound bar), just so you can have a few hours of extra comfort on a flight?! That baffles me. Fair enough if you’re loaded, why not fly first class AND have the new car, laptop etc. But to forgo the long-term comforts that make your day-to-day life easier, just for a a few hours of extra comfort makes no sense at all

Just because you disagree with me doesn't make you right (and vv).
We value different things and that is totally fine.

I feel that my (for example) last £4k longhaul flight gave me a lot more value than your dismissive "some free champagne in a fancy glass & a bed". And it was affordable to me on my normal income because I don't have any of the expenses mentioned.

I live a perfectly comfortable and easy life even though I don't have a media wall and sonos soundbar, or a new iPhone or whatever. And of course children are factor because they do cost a fortune, plus they would also cost another seat (as indeed would a partner, or having to fly in school holidays etc).

You live your life, I'll live mine and we'll both enjoy it. As pp said, me doing what I do subsidises the economy prices anyway so you should be egging me on 😂

Gcol · 18/03/2026 14:25

Kitchen roll is easier if you are cleaning mud from boots.

So many people throw out too much perfectly edible food. Make a mince mix for spaghetti bolognaise and a quarter of it does not get eaten as made too much. It gets binned. Put in a tuppaware box and use it for another day for jacket potato filling or mix a tin of baked beans, top with grated cheese- put in oven for 15 mins

Specialagentblond · 18/03/2026 19:46

Erm. I think the price or amount paid for something should always be weighed against the value of it.

So I will pay for a carrier bag. It’s because I’ve forgotten one, or I’ve ended up buying more than anticipated but it light have been a bargain, or saved another trip so therefore worth buying the bag for. Then I might use it as a bin bag because I’ve run out, have too many or the carrier bag is a bit too tatty to take out.

Someone may have received a sparkly number plate as a present from someone they love, and it may bring them joy. That’s money well spent in my opinion, if all essentials are thought about.

Some people see the price of everything and the value of nothing.

for my face too?…and surfaces…

Er yes it's called a flannel. Obviously wouldn't use the same cloth as for surfaces. But I never really feel the need to clean my face other than in my bathroom. My face doesn't really get dirty in the course of the day. When kids were small I had a pile of washable facecloths in the kitchen. Straight into the washing machine after use.

Actually an 8 month old can go on plenty of rides at Disneyland Paris , one of ours was about 6 months on her first trip .

I think everyone can do what they want.Unless they affect me,i won't judge others.

Bluegreenbird · 20/03/2026 06:25

My boss at work was washing her carrier bag in the sink recently. She lives in a £2million house. She just really doesn’t like waste!
I admire her spending priorities. Mended good quality shoes, darned jumpers, ancient carrier bags, old car. But a beautiful home and massive pension pot!

TheWayWeWent · 20/03/2026 06:26

Are you living with my old flatmate?
She was too stingy to buy bin bags when it was her turn and would use plastic bags every time until I caved and got bin bags. It used to confuse me so much, but then it occurred to me that she probably doesn’t pay for them and would just pretend she forgot if ever challenged…

Go on holiday with young kids. Holidays are so expensive and with young kids it’s just same shit in a different location and the little buggers don’t even remember it!

But I will remember it. We go on holiday because we want to go on holiday and keep seeing new places. Not because it's something the kids are necessarily going to remember. I don't get the "same shit different location" trope. The different location is the point and makes up for the annoyances that travelling with children can bring.
