Things people do to show that more money than sense

I’ll start
. People who spend 40-70p on a carrier bag then use it for rubbish.
. People who buy those number plates which have multi colours, lettering has glitter on them. Not road legal

It’s subjective. I’m sure we all do things that make people think that about us.

Wildgoat · 14/03/2026 12:42

I’m sure we all do things that make others judge op. This thread has made me judge you.

Morepositivemum · 14/03/2026 12:46

I’ve used a bag for rubbish because I suddenly realised I was going to be giving someone a lift/ kids were coming over and the car was in a mess!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 14/03/2026 12:49

My first thought on the subject was : Cocaine

Notmyreality · 14/03/2026 12:49

You mean poor people are allowed on here? <fans self>

There are so many things that I feel are more money than sense purchases:
latest iPhone, enormous cars, designer bags..
but am sure someone else would consider my long haul business flights as proof I have more money than sense.

Long haul flights in business

More money than sense that one 🤠

Spend £££ on designer clothes for babies. BAFFLES ME, they grow so quick! (if you can afford it, fair play, but it still makes no sense to me!).

Besidemyselfwithworry · 14/03/2026 13:01

We went to a kids party once and the party bags had contents in it I’d used for a gift!!! They were a smiggle water bottle filled with stationery and bits of- they do really good sales but even if they were worth £6-7 per bottle with the 5 for £5 bits in it’s still a lot!

I mean very generous but there was 20 kids there and so it must have cost a fortune!! X

So does this mean you think it’s ok for affluent people to start a thread saying what shows people have no money and then give some shitty examples? Because if it’s ok for one it’s ok for the other.

or is this like it’s like it’s ok to start threads to slag off slim women but they can’t start them to slag off fat ones?

This is so true.
I am guilty of judging people for ‘having more money than sense’, for example I have a friend who never, ever makes a sandwich, will only ever buy them from M&S; people who always throw leftovers away; I know someone who has an off-road car, a family BMW and a sports car etc etc

But some people would say the same about some of the things I do. And where do you draw the line anyway? Buying steak instead of mince? Going out for a meal when it’s not a special occasion? Having more clothes than you actually need ? And so on.

UniquePinkSwan · 14/03/2026 13:13

I have a PS5 in every room bar bathrooms. I don’t give a tiny shite what you all think of that

Magnalux · 14/03/2026 13:16

This thread is ridiculous, people can spend their money on what they want. Using a carrier bag as a bin is hardly a sign of having untold riches

IsItWickedNotToCare · 14/03/2026 13:21

Get their oven cleaned professionally instead of scrubbing it themselves like the rest of us paupers 🤣

mrbluebirdonmyshoulder · 14/03/2026 13:21

Don't forget that old mumsnet favourite - people who finance cars instead of driving old bangers - who the fuck do they think they are?😂

Last time I flew there was a young woman travelling alone with 3 under 5s.

It was a whole picture of 'how does she do it' and one thing I noticed was that the older two were wearing Dior trainers, which I googled to find that new, they're about £500. For kids trainers.

She was either very wealthy or a Vinted and hand me downs Queen. Which was interesting considering it was a Ryanair flight, my ticket cost me £60 including a hold bag.

CurlewKate · 14/03/2026 13:25

Well, I’ve been looking longingly at a F&M picnic basket for £1700 this morning……😂

What the 'old bangers' crowd on here always fail to recognise that the main reason they are happy with a cheap old car us because they can afford to live on walking and cycling distance of amenities and work or can WFH. And in places where they can actually leave a bike with basic security without it getting stolen.

They have no concept at all about needing a car to drive to work 20 miles away because they can't afford to live any closer and if there is public transport its connections and takes much longer than driving.

tanstaafl · 14/03/2026 13:36

Changing car or motorcycle exhausts for louder types.
Having tinted windscreen and front windows.

But short haul business class is even more stupid 🤔 at least Long haul you have a flat bed and can sleep

Waitingforthesunnydays · 14/03/2026 13:45

These responses are annoying and sooo typical MN. It’s a lighthearted question & I’m sure most people could think of some things that show people have more money than sense that most average-income people could agree on. I don’t think you’re going to get anywhere though OP, cos everyone knows the average MN user earns way above income! So much more likely to get these defensive replies instead.

Some examples I can think of (from an average-income person) - replacing a washing machine with a brand new one when a small part breaks cos they’re too lazy to get it fixed, spending thousands on a painting consisting of a black canvas with a red dot in the middle that a toddler could have done, just because the artist is highly-regarded, having a daily “runaround” car (that’s bigger and fancier than most people’s family car) and having a family car (that’s usually a brand new, top of the range Range Rover) when they have no actual need for the second car, buying a brand new car full stop, replacing electronics with the newest models as soon as they come out

TigerRag · 14/03/2026 13:48

Buying the latest iPhone when a new one comes out.

But a roll of 30-50 kitchen bin bags is £1.40-£2.50. These bags are bigger, better to put in bin and able to tie them up better. This is the same price as a 1/10th of carrier bags

The £70 I spent about every 18 months to get mine done is always worth every penny!
