I’ll start
. People who spend 40-70p on a carrier bag then use it for rubbish.
. People who buy those number plates which have multi colours, lettering has glitter on them. Not road legal

Kitchen roll. I just don't understand it!😂

I bought huge pack of 8 yesterday, I didn't even know I'm rich 😁🤣

Runnersandtoms · 17/03/2026 07:01

Not more money than sense but just no money-sense. People who buy expensive clothing or shoes, don't wear them and then sell on Vinted.

I recently bought a pair of trainers, tags on that would have been £150 new. The lady selling them said she loves them but she's saving up for her wedding so 'everything unworn has to go'. If you aren't rich why on earth would you buy expensive shoes and not wear them? And it sounds like she has loads of stuff like this. There are no unworn clothes in my house. Either we wear them, or take them back to the shop if we change our minds.

How do people NOT buy kitchen roll?
how do you clean up a spill,
wipe you mouth/fingers while eating?
wipe around the lids of jars when something drips on them? Etc etc…

Use a cloth, then chuck it in the washing machine?

People who buy random old decorative shite for their very normal looking house. Old phone boxes sat in the front garden. I've seen a ski lift in another, old post boxes, there's a place I visit where giant custom metal silhouette style statues.are clearly fashionable as everyone has a massive one in their front garden. I get that it's probably got a lot of meaning but always think when does someone have cash lying round for a telephone box

MayaPinion · 17/03/2026 07:15

I buy Lurpak. Yes I am doing well for myself, thank you very much.

(Don’t come at me with tales of how Presidente or Golden Cow or making it yourself with milk from cows who’ve been fed in lush green pastures in rural Scotland, is so much better. None of them hold a candle to the creamy freshness of Lurpak)

for my face too?…and surfaces…

Pricelessadvice · 17/03/2026 07:18

Cocaine.
I don’t care if people want to spend their money on nice cars, holidays, expensive shoes… but spending money on something so damaging is just bizarre to me.

MrsClattenburg · 17/03/2026 07:18

Kitchen roll (and tin foil) are the things I never want to run out of, so handy! Who wants to faff around looking for yet another cloth under the sink to wipe a spill, etc?

Well you can use a dishcloth or cloth napkin and wash them….

i use kitchen roll.

What you seem to be asking OP is why people buy things they don’t need, or why they buy a more expensive option sometimes. This isn’t an indicator of a person having no sense, in fact I think you might be the one with no sense here. Some people buy what they want with their money. Some people are utter misers and never spend a penny more than they need to. Then there is the in between, far more usual type who are a bit careful not to be wasteful but at the same time are not scared to use their money.

The biggest question is why do you even care?

Go on holiday with young kids. Holidays are so expensive and with young kids it’s just same shit in a different location and the little buggers don’t even remember it!

I am taking my 8 month old to euro disney. It would make him smile and it cost £300 for tickets hotel and eurostar. Seeing him happy makes us happy.

So far he has been to Germany and Netherlands though admittedly latter was for a wedding but we did sneak in some fun time going to Beamish in Newcastle and travelling to Amsterdam by ferry.

Tbh holidays and days out are the cheapest thing you can do with babies. They don't even cost anything extra!

The £70 I spent about every 18 months to get mine done is always worth every penny!

I was going to say - professional oven cleaning is a boon!

Buying new clothes and not wearing them, donating to charity shop. Great for us as a shop, we are truly grateful but I think it comes under more money than sense eg yesterday I sold a tags still attached Reiss dress with an original cost of £199, reduced to £129 in the sale - for £29.99, who doesn’t try on such an expensive dress until after the return period is up? I had half a dozen pieces like this yesterday alone donated

I have got a couple of fabulous things in charity shops, yours sounds amazing 😊 Any clue to location ? 😊

Yeah, the "tags on" is a clue....

New EVs cost twenty thirty forty thousand pounds. I assure you that flights are much cheaper than that.

New macs and iphones can be thousands each. Apple seem to be doing ok so someone is buying them. Fancy home entertainment systems, all the kitchen gadgets etc...Not to mention children, which cost a bomb.

All those things add up to a lot of money that I choose not to spend + my other thriftiness = affordable flights.

This just makes no sense. Or maybe I’m misunderstanding and your argument isn’t that you are an average earner? Because if it is, what you seem to be saying is average earners buy brand new EVs, have fancy home entertainment systems, all the kitchen gadgets etc. Firstly, that’s not true. There’s no way I could afford a new car, on average i buy cars that are around 5 yrs old. Normal people who buy new cars get them on finance. Same with iPhones & Macs, they’re paid for on monthly contracts. Secondly, having a high-quality EV, a home entertainment system & the latest Mac can dramatically improve your day-to-day life, an improvement that lasts for many years to come. Also the EV is so much better for the planet. And the cost of having children really cannot be compared to the cost of a first class flight 🤣. The first class flight is thousands of pounds just to have some free champagne in a fancy glass & a bed rather a seat for a few hours. You would rather drive an old car, risking regular breakdowns & polluting the planet, have a slow computer that keeps crashing, put up with the slightly muffled tv speakers (rather than say, buying a sound bar), just so you can have a few hours of extra comfort on a flight?! That baffles me. Fair enough if you’re loaded, why not fly first class AND have the new car, laptop etc. But to forgo the long-term comforts that make your day-to-day life easier, just for a a few hours of extra comfort makes no sense at all

Missingducks · 17/03/2026 07:40

People who send 1st class birthday cards instead of posting it 2nd class a week earlier!

Nanda66 · 17/03/2026 07:45

Expensive luggage. I’ve got a friend who recently spent over £1300 on a suitcase. It may look nice but it all just gets chucked around by baggage handlers!

Agreed! I spend about 6 hours a week in my quite nice car. Probably about 20 hours a week listening to music on my Sonos sound system. And I drink 2 or 3 fantastic coffees a day from my Sage espresso machine.

I fly maybe 2 or 3 times a year, so 30 hours a year max.

Think I know where I'm prioritising my spending!

I agree that taking young kids on holiday can be a lovely experience, seeing them having fun is the best. However I have to say, taking a baby to Euro Disney is insane! Unless of course, the trip is more for you and your partner and the baby’s just coming with you. But if it’s all for him..he won’t even know he’s there, won’t be able to go on any rides (and neither will you). I’d seriously be thinking about saving that trip for a few years. I took my 4 yo and I’d say that was a great age. It was magical for her, she could go on most of the rides, she knew who all the Disney characters were in the parades, and loved the Frozen theatre shows

I agree ,i absolutely cannot see the point in very expensive watches .
Same with certain designer bags ie Birkin - emperors new clothes !

Birkins are a great workhorse. Mine is my work bag and travels all over the world with me. No other bags come close to Hermes in terms of quality. Plenty of money, plenty of sense.😉
