Things people do to show that more money than sense

I’ll start
. People who spend 40-70p on a carrier bag then use it for rubbish.
. People who buy those number plates which have multi colours, lettering has glitter on them. Not road legal

Last time I flew there was a young woman travelling alone with 3 under 5s.

It was a whole picture of 'how does she do it' and one thing I noticed was that the older two were wearing Dior trainers, which I googled to find that new, they're about £500. For kids trainers.

She was either very wealthy or a Vinted and hand me downs Queen. Which was interesting considering it was a Ryanair flight, my ticket cost me £60 including a hold bag.

Probably fake

Get their oven cleaned professionally instead of scrubbing it themselves like the rest of us paupers 🤣

Cleaned? Who gets their oven cleaned? I just buy a new one.

These responses are annoying and sooo typical MN. It’s a lighthearted question & I’m sure most people could think of some things that show people have more money than sense that most average-income people could agree on. I don’t think you’re going to get anywhere though OP, cos everyone knows the average MN user earns way above income! So much more likely to get these defensive replies instead.

Some examples I can think of (from an average-income person) - replacing a washing machine with a brand new one when a small part breaks cos they’re too lazy to get it fixed, spending thousands on a painting consisting of a black canvas with a red dot in the middle that a toddler could have done, just because the artist is highly-regarded, having a daily “runaround” car (that’s bigger and fancier than most people’s family car) and having a family car (that’s usually a brand new, top of the range Range Rover) when they have no actual need for the second car, buying a brand new car full stop, replacing electronics with the newest models as soon as they come out

I've got to say i do that with appliances.. but I find it's a hassle to get someone to even come out to look at the broken washing machine/dryer in the first place, then if it's fixable it costs nearly the same as a new one anyway. It's easier to just order a new one to come the next day

Just another judgy thread started by a poor person.

A judgey post from someone complaining about judgey posts. Now I’ve seen it all!

Im happy to join I in lol. And I’ve just been reminded of an infamous article in one of the newspaper magazines on a family’s ‘struggles’ over whether or not to buy a second pony!

You mean poor people are allowed on here? <fans self>

Dyson is another example of the emperor's new clothes. It's become the status symbol for those with more money than sense.

Mischance · 15/03/2026 09:21

Designer anything - what an utter waste of money while people starve on the other side of the globe.

On the rare occasions I have bought a plastic carrier bag it’s because I have been disorganised and forgotten to bring a cloth bag. I always use the plastic bag for clearing out the grate or as a bin liner. I’m not going to use it as a bag because I prefer cloth bags for that - they are stronger and have more practical handles. Saving the plastic bag to take shopping is pointless and wouldn’t save any money as I have already ‘wasted’ the money by not bringing a one of the cloth bags I already own.

Yes. This is me also. I'd cleaned out my car prior to it's MOT and the reusable bags hadn't made it back in there. I spent 40p on a bag and reused it for a bin liner because i wasn't going to reuse it as a bag. Buying a roll of bin liners in the shop when I needed a bag for groceries would not have made any sense.

I saw a thing on TV about a woman who buys a new pair of white socks for every day for her DD to wear at school because "they never look as good once you've washed them". She didn't seem like she had loads of money, just no sense!

Edited

I get that. I spent all of my pocket money going to Woolworths to buy white socks. My DM was terrible at laundry.

UltraAlox5 · 15/03/2026 09:31

What do you bother working for if not to treat yourself?
I buy expensive coffee. Do I need it? No (well yes I love it). It’s frivolous but it’s my damn money.

That reminds me of my friend's boss. My friend is PA to a very rich woman. Once a year this woman's daughter hosts a BBQ at her house. Afterwards, she chucks the BBQ out because she can't be bothered to clean it, then buys a new one the next year.

A friend has a £150000 Patek Philipe diamond encrusted watch. That’s surely the definition of more money than sense?

I agree ,i absolutely cannot see the point in very expensive watches .
Same with certain designer bags ie Birkin - emperors new clothes !

I’ve got an oven in every room.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 15/03/2026 14:31

I follow this woman on you tube and she does videos about ridiculous extravagance and fashions (she hates Balenciaga). This is proper high end stupidness, not extravagant to most people stuff. Now if you bought that and used it to empty the crap out of your car, that would be nuts.https://youtube.com/shorts/AvqzSrn7nQY?si=ZwS02UDzJyAb6gbD

I worked in a posh school where in the party bags were Tiffany bracelets, for 8 year olds.

I reached peak WTF that day

Kitchen roll. I just don't understand it!😂

Cor blimey luv

Long haul flights in business

More money than sense that one 🤠

99% of the time DH has far, far more money than sense yet refuses outright to pay for Business Class when we fly, and we fly a lot.

Then he never fails to moan about lack of leg room, crap food etc. It drives me up the wall.

Waitingforthesunnydays · 16/03/2026 07:40

singthing · 15/03/2026 08:38

Pffft, I fly first class and I don't care who knows it. For me the journey starts when I arrive at the airport and I enjoy every moment!

But, the reason I can do this is that I am very thrifty elsewhere and don't buy the gadgets and cars and coffees etc. Different strokes for different folks.

Lol I don’t think most people could afford to fly first class just by not buying the latest gadgets, cars and coffees 🤣

singthing · 16/03/2026 18:33

Waitingforthesunnydays · 16/03/2026 07:40

New EVs cost twenty thirty forty thousand pounds. I assure you that flights are much cheaper than that.

New macs and iphones can be thousands each. Apple seem to be doing ok so someone is buying them. Fancy home entertainment systems, all the kitchen gadgets etc...Not to mention children, which cost a bomb.

All those things add up to a lot of money that I choose not to spend + my other thriftiness = affordable flights.

Well, I’ve been looking longingly at a F&M picnic basket for £1700 this morning……😂

Don't we all 🤣👏

Kitchen roll. I just don't understand it!😂

How do people NOT buy kitchen roll?
how do you clean up a spill,
wipe you mouth/fingers while eating?
wipe around the lids of jars when something drips on them? Etc etc…

BretonStripe · 17/03/2026 04:06

Someone recently told me they'd spent £50 on a water bottle (a Yeti) for their 13yo son.

Keeping my face neutral and not showing the judgement was HARD.

They hold events for children to make sushi

But sushi is so easy to make and cheap ! Why not just teach rhem to make it at home ?

I use a cloth for spills that I can rewash and reuse.
I don't generally need to, I'd probably just actually wash my hands/face.
I don't know what lid I would need to wipe, but I'd just use a clean cloth anyway.

So, kitchen roll is pretty much useless to me.🙂

Vivienne1000 · 17/03/2026 05:59

Like someone else said it’s subjective. And if it makes you happy and you can afford it, you have the right to spend your money on what you want to. We are all different and we all like different things.

Bluegreenbird · 17/03/2026 06:32

It is fascinating how people spend their money and what signals they like to give out. We all make such choices.
I wouldn’t wear a heavily logoed designer brand item even if it was free which is illogical. I just wouldn’t want to be judged for it.
A friend’s daughter has started seeing a man who is 25 years older than her. In a photo he was wearing a designer t shirt that is £400+. So he either spends that on a t shirt or buys fakes to look like he does. Yes I’m judgy. We all are. Just different judgements.
