DD7yo is begging to have her ears pierced tonight (school night) is it a bad idea?

So, DD has been begging to have her ears done - fine by me, explained it hurts, taking care of them ect ect.
I suggested waiting until summer holidays due to PE ect.. but DD said the girls in her class don’t take their earrings out for PE and don’t tape them ect. I checked with those parents and the school and they are allowed to wear a small stud during PE. So DD wants it done asap.

Its a non uniform day tomorrow and DD is now begging relentlessly to have her ears done when she gets home tonight so she can show them to her friends with her non-uniform 😂

I don’t know if I’m overthinking it, is it a good idea to send her off to school with fresh piercings? Should we wait until the weekend, or do you think she’ll be ok if she did have them done tonight? She knows she can’t fiddle with them ect. They don’t have PE tomorrow anyway ect. But I’m so undecided.

Op MN tends to be a bit snotty about children having ears pierced so you may get lots of negative replies on here. However if you can get an appointment with a reputable piercer tonight then why not? Its a minor thing to have done and it will make your daughter happy, what’s the problem. Just make sure you keep them clean and she will be fine.

Just go for it OP. MN is such a bloody weird place! (and who cares if its done at Claire's?!)

She is aware it will hurt and the care required so I don't see why not at all. Make her happy :)

So why are you on it then? Other opinions to yours are valid too

Katiesaidthat · 12/03/2026 15:14

I would do it on a Friday afternoon.
I am always surprised how in Britain (dont know other countries apart from my own) such a fuss is made about having ears pierced. My daughter was 5.5 months old when she had hers 7 years ago,so no worries about school. The local nurse came and done. No problem. Mine were done before I was discharged from hospital as a newborn. Sorted. No problem. All this angst.
I had an extra piercing done when I was 21 at the chemist, and was so grateful to mum for having had the original ones done as a baby. Love you mum.

I wish I could understand this craze for having pierced ears, especially for a child! I have never even wanted to have my ears pierced as can't see the point.

OneFlewOverMy · 12/03/2026 15:15

Just do it ! It's not a big deal at all .

Obviously, as your ears aren´t pierced. I am full breasted, I have never seen the point of breast implants. Never a more stupid operation was invented. But then, I would say that, wouldn´t I.

BoredReceptionist · 12/03/2026 15:19

Please go to a proper piercing place, don’t get it done with a gun.

OhBettyCalmDown · 12/03/2026 15:20

If it wasn’t for your imminent holiday I’d say go for it. School night wouldn’t make a difference in our house. Our kids have to wait for so much I’d take this chance to be impulsive. My only concern would be the battle you’ll have keeping her out of the pool if they’re not healed in a few weeks time. So may be wiser in your situation to delay till after your hols

begonefoulclutter · 12/03/2026 15:21

N.O. No.

Agree she can have her ears pierced, but it has to be in the first week of the school summer holidays, and if she moans about waiting that long, then tough, it won't happen at all.

We’re going away over Easter holidays so unlikely to have it done then as we’ll be in pools, on rides ect. We can wait until the weekend I just wanted to know if there was any negative reason why she should wait until after school tomorrow, she’s excited after a few years of wearing clip ons that end up making her ears red and sore.

I’m perfectly capable of parenting and saying no.. but if there was no reason not to then why would I say no to something she wants and can be done? If it makes me her happy then I’m all for it.. but obviously not if it’s at more risk of infection ect.

You're supposed to wait at least 6 and preferably 8 weeks after ear lobe piercing before you go swimming. If you get it done now, it sounds like she wouldn't be able to go in a pool on holiday...

SinisterBumFacedCat · 12/03/2026 15:22

I had my ears pierced by needle and honestly, it hurt for 5 days afterwards. When I had them done by gun years ago it didn’t hurt but it went septic. Worth the time, expense and pain to get it done properly by needle I think.

Yeah - I'm not sure people should be all that keen on piercing parts of a child's body without their consent...

ForeverRunning · 12/03/2026 14:17

Hmm. Not sure I believe that, but if true, why haven’t you asked your friend for their advice? My sister was advised by the piercing place to book at the start of a school holiday with my niece to give it time to settle and for her to get used to it and said that is standard advice.

Piercer here that is definitely not standard advice! We advise to get them done after the 6 weeks holiday and before Easter!
No swimming, beach etc for 6 weeks after the piercing!

Miranda65 · 12/03/2026 15:23

She's 7 years old - why does she need pierced ears?
However, given that you have already agreed, OP, it seems that ship has sailed. But I think it's perfectly reasonable to wait until summer. Any child demanding that they get something now would have an automatic 'no' from me, as they don't get to decide. If the parent is paying & supervising, then summer is fine. Nobody wants a spoilt child.

TeaSqueezingpos · 12/03/2026 14:32

Sorry I think I’ve made my post sound like I want her to wait and I’m giving in. That’s not the case. I was saying to DD that she won’t be allowed them for PE so will need to be in summer hold. She the explained and I clarified with the school and I said she could have it done ‘whenever’ then and asked friend, who said just let her know and she’ll pop over with some kit to do it. So DD knows she can have it done when she’s ready, literally.. my questioning is whether a school night is a bad idea.

It’s fine to have it done on a school night. I took my dd to have hers done. Even if it wasn’t a school night, it would have been a Friday as we went after school, meaning she was dancing just fine the next day.

Edit - some people have said about the pool. Good point. Maybe best to wait.

Goldfsh · 12/03/2026 15:24

Meh I'd probably do it. I'm super-strict by Mumsnet standards but I think they are never too young to be able to make these sorts of decisions about their bodies.

Purplebunnie · 12/03/2026 15:25

Both DDs had their ears pierced at the start of the summer holidays as their schools were adamant that they had to be taken out for games. We did have a problem with them getting tight and starting to swell with one DD.

IdentityCris · 12/03/2026 15:25

TeaSqueezingpos · 12/03/2026 14:40

I haven’t actually gotten an answer to my question. People are too caught up on the fact they think my 7 year old runs the show and want me to wait just to show her how to be patient 🤣

You have got answers. People have pointed out that it would be insane to do this two weeks before the Easter holidays when she will be swimming etc. and will pick up infections.

ItsmeMargo · 12/03/2026 15:26

I say do it. Your friend is a piercer and is willing to come over and do it properly, with needles. They can talk to DD about maintenance and keeping them clean.

Hoppinggreen · 12/03/2026 15:26

Oh well, if shes begging relentlessly you should just let her do whatever she wants
OR be a parent and tell her no and to stop asking, my DC know that the more they ask for something the less likely they are to get it

scrivette · 12/03/2026 15:27

Better to get them done now than in the summer because of avoiding the swimming pool for 6 weeks.

MrsVBS · 12/03/2026 15:27

If your friend can do them and you are happy with her having them done go for it, I was 7 when I had mine done. As long as she bathes them they’ll be fine, go for it!

Allseeingallknowing · 12/03/2026 15:28

7 sounds so young to have ears pierced. My daughter never mentioned it until her late teens, but that was in the eighties…

MyTrivia · 12/03/2026 14:28

There is no such thing as ‘minimal training’. You’re either trained or you’re not. And they use the same methods as a jeweller.

I know someone who worked at Claire's that practiced on a teddy bear and then was told she was qualified. Claire's are a horrendous company.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 12/03/2026 15:31

The school are idiots BTW. Fgs, you are the parent. If you want them to have I done do it. If you want your 7 year old to call the shots that's up to you.
