I have two considerations:

Blink-182 and Led Zeppelin

I was coming on to say Fleetwood Mac or the Beatles.

I don’t agree with GNR, Axl Rose and Slash equally well known I think.

great thread!

What was the band were Tommy Lee was the drummer. Don’t think I could name the other members.

Motley Crue
And neither could I!

There aren't many people in any part of the music business more famous than Freddie Mercury even though he's been dead for 34 years! RIP. What a voice, what a presence.

I had to look this up as I cannot believe FM has been dead for 34 years! I was a schoolgirl, remember it so well.

Motley Crue

It’s strange, in the world of Rock I’d say Nikki Sixx is the most famous member of Motley Crue. So I guess it depends on who is being asked

AdaDex · 08/03/2026 15:30

The Muppets band, ''Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem''.

Animal on drums 😂

GellerYeller · 08/03/2026 15:30

Post-Smiths, Johnny Marr was briefly a permanent member of two other bands- Modest Mouse and The Cribs. I’d argue he’s far better known than any of his colleagues there.
He was also in Electronic alongside Bernard Sumner, with the Pet Shop Boys collaborating on several songs. I’d say that one’s a draw!

That is a fabulous Led Zep cover isn't it?

Can't decide if RP is enjoying it or just emotional!

Sorry, going off at a tangent again but yep, it's a fantastic arrangement....FWIW if you haven't seen it the full leaded unedited version is here:

I love the way at the start the guys look like they are worrying about what's going to happen to their baby and by the end JP is almost jumping up and down with joy.

The Mac - or at least Christine McVie, Nicks and Buckingham wrote and sang their own songs, so have less of an identifiable 'lead' singer, although Nicks is a very charismatic stage presence with a voice to die for, I think.

There's only the one song that's attributed to the whole band, and they all have a different flavour.

It's really sad about the death of Christine McVie.

LimeShaker · 08/03/2026 15:49

Sorry see FOB was mentioned many times previously - think that and Blink 182 are two big ones where whilst in the band the singer was not the most famous. Think there is a distinction between that niche and the phenomenon in pop bands that it is not always the lead that fares better solo e.g. Take That

daysofpearlyspencer · 08/03/2026 15:52

Genesis, Phil Collins was the drummer

Reepycreepy · 08/03/2026 15:58

I can’t agree about Robert Plant.

Totally agree. Really distinct songs from each of them and quite a unique set up for a band. I love Stevie Nicks.

there’s a programme on BBC sounds, can’t remember which but it’s with Lindsey Buckingham talking about how they wrote “go your own way” which is great.

Kevin Godley was the drummer for 10cc. Voice of an angel.

Pennyfan · 08/03/2026 16:52

The Yardbirds. Eric Clapton far more famous than Keith Relf.

Edited to add comment!😊

Loved the bowler hats as a nod to John Bonham.

And of course Jason on drums.

Poppy61 · 08/03/2026 17:09

Yes, Merrill was the lead singer of the Osmonds

StarCourt · 08/03/2026 18:33

Duran Duran

Piggywaspushed · 08/03/2026 18:41

That performance in the link is probably right up there as arguably the best cover version of anything, ever..

Edited
