I have two considerations:

Blink-182 and Led Zeppelin

The Housemartins - Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim was the bassist. He's probably better known than the other members in his own right, though of course Paul Heaton went on to lead The Beautiful South.

Keith moon. Pete townshend

Yes but Pete Townsend is more famous for being a pedophilia looking at kiddy porn not something to be proud off

He’s more famous now but he wasn’t at the time.

This is the Kurt Cobain v Dave Grohl argument again. It depends if you look at it now or when the band was going.

They broke the mould with John Bonham.

Edited

Aye they did. You’ve probably seen his son on the drums for the led zeppelin tribute for stairway to heaven?

edited to include a link if anyone is interested.

@paddingofpaws thanks for the thread. I much prefer talking to women about music than men. 💕

egoodman63 · 08/03/2026 13:29

Should have been Brian Jones 💜

sashh · 08/03/2026 13:30

Fall out boy.

Arguably the Damned when Captain Sensible has decided to be the centre of attention.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/03/2026 13:32

How is Genesis a correct answer? Phil Collins is the lead singer as well as the drummer. He wasn't the most famous member of Genesis when Peter Gabriel was the lead singer.

Whoever mentioned Pink Floyd, who were you thinking of as the famous non-singer? Syd Barrett, poor man, was the lead singer in the very earliest years. Dave Gilmour and Roger Waters have both been lead singers since then as well as lead guitarist and bassist respectively. I think Gilmour is arguably the best known member of Floyd.

Queen - Bryan May, no idea who the singer is.

whereisitnow · 08/03/2026 13:33

Jimmy Page. Don’t be daft.

OSTMusTisNT · 08/03/2026 13:34

Spice Girls - Victoria Beckham most famous, definitely not the main singer.

Has anyone said Red Hot Chilli Peppers yet? I don’t think Flea is the singer.

Edited

Their drummer, Will Ferrel, is more famous than Flea :)

That performance in the link is probably right up there as arguably the best cover version of anything, ever..

KnewYearKnewMe · 08/03/2026 13:39

Spice Girls - victoria beckham 😎

squashyhat · 08/03/2026 13:42

Obscure one: 10cc. Lol Creme was the singer but Eric Stuart (guitarist) and Graham Gouldman (drummer) were much better musicians and well-respected by musos at the time.

x2boys · 08/03/2026 13:42

Girls Aloud Cheryl Cole.

KnewYearKnewMe · 08/03/2026 13:42

Van Halen?

Brefugee · 08/03/2026 13:48

Francestein · 08/03/2026 11:28

Queen… The Rolling Stones… The Beatles

Queen? there is someone in Queen, or was at the time someone in Queen, more famous than the singer? no

MissCooCooMcgoo · 08/03/2026 13:50

Fall Out Boy

I'd put Freddie as possibly the best frontman ever.

Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull and Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy are also up there. Both had this eerie ability to shrink a venue and make it feel like you are in a tiny club, or someones front room. Robert Plant can do the same - especially when he reminisces about smoking "jazz cigarettes" walking down Dudley high street.

Michael Hutchence('s ghost) wants a word with you

MrsMoastyToasty · 08/03/2026 13:52

The Communards. Rev Richard Cole.

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 08/03/2026 13:53

Cream.

Everyone knows who Eric Clapton is, but lots of people couldn't name Jack Bruce.

Justice for Uncle Orinoco stuck at the back in The Wombles.

Erm
Justice for misremembered Wombles!

Uncle Bulgaria was the sidelined one. Orinoco always got all the attention.

diddl · 08/03/2026 13:54

That is a fabulous Led Zep cover isn't it?

Can't decide if RP is enjoying it or just emotional!
