I have two considerations:

Blink-182 and Led Zeppelin

But it was Sousxie and the banshees. And most people would recognise souisxie soux

Not as many as would recognise Robert Smith though.

Usually ones with a really flamboyant member or one with a very distinctive signature look. The ones that immediately sprung to mind were AC/DC and Angus Young and G&R and Slash, who have unsurprisingly already been mentioned.

Another one of those is Flake from Rammstein, whose barmy antics onstage immediately draw attention and make him noticeable before anyone else. One gig e spent the whole 90 minutes on a treadmill and he crowd-surfs in dinghies as well.

There are others where in-house band animosity can attract is sometimes a lucrative marketing tool - I.e. Kim Deal and Black Francis, and Buckingham and Nicks. The Fleetwood Mac name predated their membership of the band (started out as Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac). Unfortunately, no one talks about Peter Green now.

I disagree with Flake. Yes he’s unique and an amazing addition to the band but Till is by far the most famous.

Shaun Ryder was much more famous than Bez when the Happy Mondays were ‘in the charts’ so to speak. Alex James has become more famous over the years for his cheese and Cotswold set life - and seems to enjoy fame - in the olden days Blur were quite egalitarian, but Damon was certainly the frontman. Axl Rose and Slash I would also say more or less equal, with Axl perhaps having the slight edge (and a great voice in his day!), with his relationship with Stephanie Seymour etc.

I think Motley Crue is the best example so far.

Simon and Garfunkel?

A bit niche, but The Waterboys

I’d say Karl Wallinger was better known than Mike Scott

No, because people have actually heard of the Banshees. Nobody knows either of those. At least hardly anyone.

I mentioned Johnny being in Modest Mouse and the Cribs earlier in the thread! I accept it’s a bit niche. I didn’t know Robert Smith was in the Banshees though.

I may be slightly biased . Robert plant is my longest love affair. Sadly unrequited

Move to Kidderminster. I've seen him in the co-op Grin

The first time Robert Smith played with Siouxsie and the Banshees was when their original drummer and guitarist walked out early in a tour. The Cure were the support band on the tour, so not more famous at that point.

Gabriela Cheeky is waaaaaaay more famous than Monica Cheeky, even though Monica usually takes the lead in most of their more challenging operatic numbers.

Definitely Guns n Roses. Slash was by far bigger a name than Axl Rose.

Why are people saying The Beatles? Who even is the lead singer of The Beatles? It is impossible to say who is more famous out of Lennon and McCartney at any time since they started making music.

OonaStubbs · 15/03/2026 01:58

Van Halen is the most obvious one since the band was named after the lead guitarist (and the drummer).
Fleetwood mac were named after the bass player and drummer but I would say that Stevie Nicks is still the most famous one of the band.
ACDC - the Young family controlled the band and always made sure Angus was the focal point.
Cream where Eric Clapton was the big star but Jack Bruce was the singer. But maybe that is looking from after the fact.

KillTheTurkey · 15/03/2026 05:48

Dave Clark Five? I think Dave is the drummer.

Robbie was the lead singer on a fair few Take That songs so he probably doesn’t count.

I used to like The Longpigs and Richard Hawley was their guitarist; he’s now more famous than the others.

I guess groups like Basement Jaxx who are really producers and only ever have guest singers.

Vince Clarke in Yazoo

No I think Alison Moyet is more famous. You could say Vince Clarke in Depeche Mode, possibly?

stopthemud · 15/03/2026 09:08

Guns and Roses
