I have two considerations:

Blink-182 and Led Zeppelin

Obscure one: 10cc. Lol Creme was the singer but Eric Stuart (guitarist) and Graham Gouldman (drummer) were much better musicians and well-respected by musos at the time.

They were all singers. Eric Stewart was the lead singer on I'm Not In Love. My principal claim to fame is that I once prepared his VAT return. He and his wife were lovely. She made us all a plate of salmon sandwiches.

Queen? there is someone in Queen, or was at the time someone in Queen, more famous than the singer? no

There aren't many people in any part of the music business more famous than Freddie Mercury even though he's been dead for 34 years! RIP. What a voice, what a presence.

@paddingofpaws thanks for the thread. I much prefer talking to women about music than men. 💕

yes but can you name three of their songs?

Suzyloo · 08/03/2026 14:01

Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, the band from the Muppet Show. Animal is the most famous and he's the drummer. 😊

FrenchBunionSoup · 08/03/2026 14:02

Has anyone said fun. yet?

I think Jack Antonoff is more famous than Nate Reuss these days because of his work with Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter and others.

Although tbh I wouldn't recognise either of them if I bumped into them.

this recently happened to me! It wasn’t quite name 3 songs but a bloke asked me a question about my band t shirt. But in a “you don’t know them, you just own a primark t shirt” way.
Unlucky for him this band have been my special interest for the last 32 years.
I think he probably left with a migraine. 🤞

Brefugee · 08/03/2026 14:09

well, @Brassknucks we need to know the band now!!

SerafinasGoose · 08/03/2026 14:10

Usually ones with a really flamboyant member or one with a very distinctive signature look. The ones that immediately sprung to mind were AC/DC and Angus Young and G&R and Slash, who have unsurprisingly already been mentioned.

Another one of those is Flake from Rammstein, whose barmy antics onstage immediately draw attention and make him noticeable before anyone else. One gig e spent the whole 90 minutes on a treadmill and he crowd-surfs in dinghies as well.

There are others where in-house band animosity can attract is sometimes a lucrative marketing tool - I.e. Kim Deal and Black Francis, and Buckingham and Nicks. The Fleetwood Mac name predated their membership of the band (started out as Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac). Unfortunately, no one talks about Peter Green now.

Fall out boy

You've not met my husband then.

Ohfuckrucksack · 08/03/2026 14:17

You say Nirvana - I say 'isn't that Dave Grohl's old band'

BunnyLake · 08/03/2026 14:20

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 08/03/2026 12:41

🤣🤣🤣.
Maybe he just wanted to avoid his clothes being soaked by all the bottles of piss that were being chucked about.

Eew 😱

Wellthisisdifficult · 08/03/2026 14:24

Daijoubudesu · 08/03/2026 11:43

Def Leppard - everyone knows the drummer has only got one arm, can't tell you anything about the lead singer

Seriously?

Wellthisisdifficult · 08/03/2026 14:28

TerrorAustralis · 08/03/2026 12:29

Was coming to say Metallica. Lars Ulrich has mostly been the spokesman.

Yep, I was going to suggest motormouth Lars. Napster anyone? Incidentally he was right

Wellthisisdifficult · 08/03/2026 14:29

Iron Maiden - the Blaze Bayley years! - possibly the nicest man in the business though

Poonu · 08/03/2026 14:33

Posh spice

Happyjoe · 08/03/2026 14:39

Brefugee · 08/03/2026 11:01

FFS i spotted it and edited it. But you have no answer because you're wrong about the fame thing. So.😂

It's led zeppelin, did you spot that too? Cheeky grins!

Imdunfer · 08/03/2026 14:42

Already done, deleted

Netty72 · 08/03/2026 14:44

What was the band were Tommy Lee was the drummer. Don’t think I could name the other members.

DuchessofStaffordshire · 08/03/2026 14:53

Rosanov · 08/03/2026 13:55

Eh?? Slash is on par with Axl Rose, deffo not bigger.

Edited

I'm not sure. Axl Rose was only famous during his time as talentless singer in g'n'r (I honestly believe they could have done with a much better vocalist). Slash still remains relevant to this day and is absolutely one of the most talented guitarists in the world. He's an absolute icon whereas Axl Rose is not.

Errr Dave Grohl possibly? You seem very invested in this debate...

only since foo fighters

MissApplejack · 08/03/2026 14:58

Arguably RHCP

MissApplejack · 08/03/2026 14:59

Oasis

Gall10 · 08/03/2026 15:03

paddingofpaws · 08/03/2026 10:53

Go on then!

I say Page is more famous

Plant every time!

whatsontellytonight · 08/03/2026 15:06

I agree with PPs on Fall Out Boy- though possibly less so now than in the earlier years. I'd still guess more people can name Pete Wentz than Patrick Stump, even if Stump has done more work outside of the band!
