I have two considerations:

Blink-182 and Led Zeppelin

OP posts:

Bob the Builder, he is more famous than whoever recorded the song.

BigFishLittleFishCardboardBoxes · 08/03/2026 12:26

Blur now. Alex James although he’s more famous for his cheese I think.

shellyleppard · 08/03/2026 12:27

Rick Allen from def leppard for his amazing one armed drumming skills ❤️🤯❤️

Errr Dave Grohl possibly? You seem very invested in this debate...

Why wouldn't @paddingofpaws be invested in the debate? They began it. You, on the other hand.......

It’s funny you say that because Dave is always saying he didn’t think his drumming was all that. I disagree with him but I suppose technically he wasn’t as good as Taylor Hawkins. I think for drummers that Travis Barker is incredible, much like chad smith. My personal favourite drummer of all time is Karen Carpenter.
I believe Kurt Cobain to be hugely underrated as a guitarist and songwriter. I don’t think Nirvana even have bad B sides. I find foos a bit flat but still go to watch them at every opportunity, I like Dave’s live performance.

Lars from Metallica is the most famous member but not the singer.
Maybe controversial however I think Kim Deal is the most famous member of the pixies.

Was coming to say Metallica. Lars Ulrich has mostly been the spokesman.

The Stranglers

Who specifically do you mean? I would say they always had 2 frontmen.

FruAashild · 08/03/2026 12:31

Manfred Mann - named after the keyboardist

RonaldMcDonaldTrump · 08/03/2026 12:31

Mis-Teeq (Alisha Dixon)

shellyleppard · 08/03/2026 12:32

Steve " steaming" clarke from def leppard for his guitar playing and tragic death ❤️

BigFishLittleFishCardboardBoxes · 08/03/2026 12:33

Dave Grohls behaviour has put me off watching him live. It makes me sad that he turned out to be a twat.

RonaldMcDonaldTrump · 08/03/2026 12:33

Eternal (Louise Redknapp)

What's he done?

What's he done?

Cheated on his wife and got the ow pregnant.

ColourThief · 08/03/2026 12:39

runawaycheese · 08/03/2026 10:57

Nirvana

Yeah, no.

Even dead, Kurt Cobain is still more famous than Dave.
As much as I also love Dave and the Foo Fighters.

I’m not sure I will ever get over his performsnce at Woodstock 99 🫣

🤣🤣🤣.
Maybe he just wanted to avoid his clothes being soaked by all the bottles of piss that were being chucked about.

The Yardbirds would have been a better bet than Led Zeppelin 😀

Fleetwood Mac were named after the drummer, which is a pretty heavy trip 😎

Fleetwood Mac was named after 2 people - Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, but in the days before the lineup from the 70s, Peter Green, vocalist, lead guitar, and the man who founded the band, was absolutely the most famous. At one time they were officially known as Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac.

Definitely The Who.

What’s interesting is that how many bands there are where the fame shifts location with time. I would say The Smiths now - Johnny Marr - but Morrissey was more famous back then.

My husband was saying yesterday that Morrissey's reputation has been trashed a tad because he somehow got himself associated with extreme right wing types. Have you heard of that? I haven't googled it yet, it just doesn't fit with what I thought I knew about him. Inc being a veggie.

ZiggyZowie · 08/03/2026 12:43

Janes Addiction. - Dave Navarro

ColourThief · 08/03/2026 12:45

Maddy70 · 08/03/2026 11:16

Nirvana

Another wrong answer.

Very very disappointing and sad

Kiss. Gene Simmons.

He's one of two lead singers though? He and Paul Stanley sing half the songs each, while Gene plays bass and Paul plays guitar.

DaffodilValley · 08/03/2026 12:51

FruAashild · 08/03/2026 11:15

Amused by how heated this debate is. Here's a non-controversial one: D:Ream

And Dare of course. 😊

Pricesandvices · 08/03/2026 12:51

Fall out boy. I just had to Google the lead singers name as I had no idea. But I know who Pete Wentz is.

imadayperson · 08/03/2026 13:02

Fun little game...
The Yardbirds and Genesis are probably the most obviously correct answers. Could probably add Van Halen and Beats International to this 'of course' category

There's a whole subgroup of 'another band member is just as venerated / known as the lead singer' including Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Guns'n'Roses, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Ex

There is maybe another category where the band's most 'iconic' member is not the lead singer - Def Leppard which another commentor mentions, maybe also Public Enemy and Battles

Not quite sure where I would put ABBA?

CaffeinatedSeagull · 08/03/2026 13:12

Sleater-Kinney. Carrie Brownstein is a lot more known (mainly for being in and writing Portlandia) than her band mate Corin Tucker.
