What are your extravagant spends that you have zero guilt about

LittlePrecious · 05/03/2026 15:24

My mum lives about 130 miles away from me. I visit her three times a year. I always get an Uber there and a first-class train back.

My friend nearly fell off her seat laughing at my extravagance when I told her about this earlier today😅😅😅

My DH has a bit of a tinned fish habit and can easily spend £70 a month on it.

What ridiculous, extravagant things do you spend money on with zero guilt?

Private school, 2:1 swimming lessons and holiday clubs when we don't need childcare (for dcs)
Expensive sports hobby (for me)
Theatre tickets.
Healthcare spending (eye surgery, body scans, private vaccinations)

I am in my late 60s and have two good friends, who I always insist on buying a bottle of champagne for, when we go out for a drink... because one glass is not enough and if you have two then you might as well have a bottle... it makes sense to me.

And, about two years ago I came into some money, so I started stocking up on cashmere sweaters from eBay and Vinted... I reckon I could go three weeks without wearing the same one twice, but they make me feel warm and cosy in the winter months so both a bargain and a luxury.

Then fresh coffee, steak, flowers and fresh flowers.

@applescentedcandle - I like the cushioned walking socks from Community Clothing, although their packs of 3 pairs of regular socks are good too.

They are made in the UK by people paid a living wage and are mostly cotton. They are just so comfortable and wear very well. Expensive to start with but outlast my M&S socks by a long way.

These look amazing. How's the sizing? Is the cuff tight? I'm really particular with socks, can't stand cuffs that leaves a mark.

Ohdearanotherone · 05/03/2026 18:13

Skincare (mid range not £100s), grazia and red magazines. Something I wouldn’t have thought twice about years ago but now magazines are so expensive! Also organic fruit when I can get it. Also so expensive and not as readily available.

Thisismetooaswell · 05/03/2026 18:15

Well I have read every post and realised I don't have any extravagances

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 05/03/2026 18:15

When the old fridge-freezer died, I splashed out on a huge American-style fridge-freezer with a door-in-door on the fridge and an ice-maker on the freezer. I don't need an ice-maker and I definitely don't need a door-in-door, but every time I open that extra door to get some milk or butter or spices out, it makes me grin like an idiot, and sometimes even say "tee hee hee" when there is nobody in the kitchen but me.

Having my short sight corrected with laser treatment as a complete luxury at the same time as having necessary cataract treatment, when I was sixty. It cost thousands at Moorfields, but not having to find my spectacles in the morning to see what is happening outside the window makes it worth every penny, every day. This was after more than fifty years of increasingly uncomfortable spectacles digging into the bridge of my nose or making painful grooves behind my ears; I couldn't wear contact lenses because I broke my spectacles into my eyes when I was nine and there were little bits of glass left in them, so it was spectacles or saying "what bus is that?" rather than "which bus is it?" No regrets whatever on that one.

BlackRowan · 05/03/2026 18:16

I take Uber instead of a bus to Crossrail station almost every day. Costs about £10. And black cab from Crossrail back home if it’s late-ish or I’m doing a school pick up. That’s £12-14

cuts my commute by 20 mins one way!

Katesyd · 05/03/2026 18:17

Return trips from Sydney to uk twice a year to see my elderly mum who lives alone.

Gotback · 05/03/2026 18:17

Penhaligon's perfume & soap.
Local butcher for meat, butter & cheese.
Milk delivered (so much nicer than supermarket milk too)
Bantam hens
Monthly massage

usedtobeaylis · 05/03/2026 18:17

It's not really an extravagance as such but I feel a twinge of guilt every time I buy a cooked rotisserie chicken instead of just cooking my own 😅 I buy one every Sunday and I can get multiple meals from it but I still feel like it's ridiculous to buy a cooked chicken.

Th cuffs are not tight - I'm a woman of, erm, ample proportions and they are very comfortable

I buy loose gemstones just to look at them! Grin I get them out at look at them sparkle like a little goblin! My current favourite is a colour change sapphire.

Oh wow I wanna have my own little goblin hoard now. Brilliant idea!

DH has always been tinned fish obsessed. It used to just be mackerel in tomato sauce.
A couple of Christmasses ago I noticed you could get some really nice imported ones so I bought him a hamper of them. Apparently tinned fish was the present of that year. I had no idea.
Anyway, he bloody loved the hamper. And now he has an expensive tinned fish habit.

I also love your DH's tinned fish things. Does he follow the Tinned Fish Guy on IG? Love his reviews.

My indulgence is tools (I'm a silver/goldsmith). I'm just building up to lashing out the best part of 2k on a microscope. Also gemstones - absolutely love choosing beautiful stones to set.

Also gorgeously scented candles Grin

Flying business class

LeebLeefuhLurve · 05/03/2026 18:24

Business class flights. Once upon a time when I was backpacking, I could sleep upright in economy for a 12 hour stretch, but now that I'm older and making noises when I sit down I can afford to splurge and being able to lay relatively flat during a long-haul makes a huge difference.

Pinkwhales · 05/03/2026 18:24

Decent moisturizer, groceries from local butcher, baker, deli and veg stall.

Just ordered a selection of condiments from a brand I tried at a garden centre, ordered online. Feels incredibly extravagant although not really a huge spend, just a little bit of luxury in the pantry.

Womaninhouse17 · 05/03/2026 18:26

Proper Greek yogurt. I've had a lifetime of having to live very frugally and am still on a tiny income (pensioner) but I love yogurt and eat it every day. It's double the price of ordinary plain yogurt but it's so good! (Might not seem extravagant to most people but it's a real treat for me.)

Moonlightfrog · 05/03/2026 18:27

Tiramisu…..I have a slight addiction
My garden/allotment, though it kind of saves me a gym membership and a therapist.

Lobsterteapot · 05/03/2026 18:29

Mulberry handbag
Cleaner
My eternity ring (well my husband paid for this)

Have a look at borrowbox, you can sign up online through your local library, the audiobooks have revolutionised my life, and the best bit is it's free, I haven't needed my audible subscription for ages.

Same here👍

Crumpets. Before you say they're not expensive, I'm not in the UK. I have to pay around £5 for a pack of 6 and a further £15 delivery charge. For crumpets.

I see your crumpets and I raise you

  • self raising flour
  • Katy cider
  • Jacobs cereal crackers
  • red onion chutney

Oh and I ordered some Emma Bridgewater stuff recently. Nice mugs and a BIG TRAY.

NotMeAtAll · 05/03/2026 18:33

I spend stupid money on my perfume stockpile.
