What are your extravagant spends that you have zero guilt about

LittlePrecious · 05/03/2026 15:24

My mum lives about 130 miles away from me. I visit her three times a year. I always get an Uber there and a first-class train back.

My friend nearly fell off her seat laughing at my extravagance when I told her about this earlier today😅😅😅

My DH has a bit of a tinned fish habit and can easily spend £70 a month on it.

What ridiculous, extravagant things do you spend money on with zero guilt?

Am going to see Harry Styles 3x on his current tour and am in the pit. Don’t care that I have spent a small fortune. I am a massive fan and he makes me happy

AlwaysRoomForGin · 06/03/2026 20:28

Too many things that I should feel very guilty about but don't🙈
Some £££ relate to DH - he's very expensive to keep !😊 A few years ago as a treat I bought him loose leaf long jing green tea from Fortnums in a tiny caddy and their honey with walnuts ...now that's all he will use...we live nowhere near F&M so I feel zero guilt at signing up to their membership scheme which gives me free delivery over £25 spend...easily done as the piddling tea caddy is £16 a pop & the honey £23 a jar!
He has a penchant for expensive cars & I think that's why after years of being very careful I feel it's lovely to splurge a bit on:
Molton Brown handsoap in all bathrooms and utility, Molton Brown shower toiletries for DH & Dyptique for me.
Botox twice a year, luxury hotel stays in UK few times a year with Michelin dining, a family holiday, a 10 day break just the 2 of us, long haul with business class seats, nails every 3 weeks, facials every 3 months, Sophia Webster shoes, Aspinal, Chanel and Chloe handbags. It's not always been this way and I know how vey fortunate we are.

One dog costs us a fortune at the vet every month so our pet insurance is eye watering but he (& sister) bring us (well me) inordinate joy so that doesn't count!

God, everything. I spend a lot of money. Picking out the things I feel no guilt at all about -

My hair. Had to cut the whole family’s hair for 12 years or so and hated it, so I love having hair that looks good now.

My cleaner.

My wedding. I’ve just spent 4 figures on my wedding dress, which is an evening dress rather than a classic wedding dress, and I probably love it about equally with my fiancé.

My shoes. I have apocalyptically bad feet. I now only buy two brands of shoe, my feet never hurt and I never have blisters. For the first 40 years of my life I assumed that all shoes were agony until they’d fallen to pieces.

Which shoes brands?

Itsallanillusion · 06/03/2026 20:38

Regular facial and pedicure at my local college.

Dancingintherain09 · 06/03/2026 20:38

When I got burgled my grans bracelet, my ring from my 21st and the watch my husband bought me for our wedding day got stolen. I spent the insurance money on a £700 Gucci watch (15 years ago).
It costs me £80 a pop for a battery change every year.

PearAndGingerCake · 06/03/2026 20:39

My bed! Biggest & most expensive in the shop but for the storage, size, height, colour & fabric it’s gorgeous and I hope to have it for years & years yet! First time purchasing furniture after years of renting made me crave choosing a really nice bed- absolutely no regrets 🤗 also my animals; they have loads of bedding, toys, snacks, top brand food, real food etc and are in great shape physically with no usual issues for the breed. A healthy diet for them really pays off in their health; fish & eggs & offal & fibre aka veg (mainly on kibble but topped up with these other things). Happy & healthy :)

Fancy organic almond shower oil.
Organic natural perfume.

Never mind showing us the fish, show us the dress!

Well... I did. And not one person said it was fabulous. Not one!!! It is quite possible that it's a hideous garment. But I don't care, I would have crawled to the ends of the earth on my hands and knees to possess it. And now I do. And it is in my wardrobe, where I can take it out and stroke it whenever I want to, and sometimes even put it on! I should mention that it weighs an absolute ton - astonishing, must be the fringes (you'll see what I mean if you find the pix). It hangs on the body like a dream.

There is now a social event on my calendar later this year!!!!!!!!!! A 90th birthday celebration. I am planning to parade my finery. If anyone comments on the dress will attempt an airy "Oh, this old thing...!" 🌞

A seasonal pitch for my caravan, so I can escape for 3 days a week throughout the spring and summer.

We have been touring for 10 years but looking to find a seasonal pitch in the next year or so as we are getting a bit tired of moving about with our caravan and like you say, the idea of just jumping in the car and escaping to our little holiday box without having to tow it is becoming more appealing.

Is it very expensive per season?

Private health care cover for our family.
Clearly a luxury and highly extravagant, but - worth it's weight in gold and also financially a no-brainer for us. (It works out at only £40 a month more to have full health cover, than we were paying for just dentistry for 3 adults and 2 children. Dentistry is included in our health cover).

Paying for the best seats we can afford in the theatre/cinema.

Decent hotels instead of a premier inn. Nothing wrong with a premier inn at all - but we stay away so rarely I want nice things.

David Lloyd gym membership. I'm afraid our local public facilities for swimming are foul.

I realise I sound like a privileged, stuck-up snob. I am actually nice I think, but I spent a very long time being very poor and hating every second of it. I want to enjoy the fact that we can have nice things now, not keep the money in the bank and being a bit miserable.

Hedjwitch · 06/03/2026 20:45

Embassy of London shoes. I buy a pair a year as my treat to myself.

StandingOnaCornerInWinslowArizona · 06/03/2026 20:45

Human hair toppers.
My hair has been ruined from years of iron deficiency. Around 15 years ago I discovered hair toppers and although not cheap they have given me back my confidence.

Dancingintherain09 · 06/03/2026 20:46

Botox I have sensitive eyes and a really bad squint reflex that gives me migraines and a horrible line between my eyes that made me look angry all the time. I spend £300 every 14-16 weeks and it's worth every penny (I also get around my eyes done because why not).
Manicure every 3 weeks.

A good massage (3-4 a year)
Good wine, good cheese.
eating out 2 x a month (at least)
coffee dates with husband.

An Italian holiday once a year to a different locations.

I don't feel guilty anymore after losing 2 friends this year to cancer/su#%!de I've realised life is really is for living and enjoying, so do what you want and what you love ❤️

Proper Greek yogurt. I've had a lifetime of having to live very frugally and am still on a tiny income (pensioner) but I love yogurt and eat it every day. It's double the price of ordinary plain yogurt but it's so good! (Might not seem extravagant to most people but it's a real treat for me.)

Make your own! I use my instant pot, but you don't need to do that, a litre of UHT milk makes 500g of "greek" yoghurt. Absolutely delicious. Straining it is the secret to thick yoghurt.

None of those things make you sound like a privileged, stuck up snob. I also have private health cover, buy the best seats at shows/concerts etc, always stay in good hotels and have private gym membership as the local council run leisure centre is shit, and I didn’t even mention those things as luxuries 😂

@Advice5 I’m sure @TheChicDreamer will be along to tell you about her experience but thought I’d offer some info.

I’d Had braces as a child (well, teenager) but they hadn’t worked as well as they might.

Also my teeth just felt small. Turned out the reason for that is that I grind them every night.
The cosmetic dentist I used said he wasn’t prepared to put veneers on my teeth because my teeth weren’t straight enough, and therefore the veneers wouldn’t last. So I had to have straighteners. I had Invisalign. It took absolutely ages but I now have good, but very natural looking, teeth.

I wear retainers every night to stop the grinding doing damage and to keep my teeth in place.

Am very pleased with how natural they look.

Thanks for sharing your experience. How do the straighteners work is that what invisalign is? How long did it take to straighten yours? Are retainers needed after to keep teeth in place?

Crumpets. Before you say they're not expensive, I'm not in the UK. I have to pay around £5 for a pack of 6 and a further £15 delivery charge. For crumpets.

They're cheeringly easy to make. The first batch or two can be a bit sketchy but once you've got the beating down pat & figured out your best pan for cooking 'em, they're an absolute breeze & ready for you in a couple of hours at most, rather than having to wait for your order to arrive days or weeks after you got the urge for crumpets.

Worth investing in proper crumpet rings though, I first tried using ones intended for pikelets because that's all I had, they were far too shallow. Had I wanted to teach toddlers how to throw a discus they'd have been ideal.
This recipe works; https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/crumpets_61013

The lady who waxes my brows always gives me a little Temple Spa pack at Christmas. I love the smell and I'd love to get some moisturiser but I'm not sure where to start with it.

Ooh well I'd say the repose cream is the best if it's luxury smell you're after. It's basically like a thick, velvety night cream. I only use it at night before bed if I've had a long shower and am in a pampery mood. I know they use it in facials, it feels super smooth on your skin and omg it just helps me drift off to sleep. I'm going to put some on tonight now! It's quite greasy so definitely just a pamper product rather than a daily moisturiser. I've been bought a couple of others in the past - body creams, and they just don't smell anywhere near as nice.
They often have offers on so I wait for an offer to get them. But I shall definitely carry on getting them!

I also need to know this - which brands , TIA🙏

Guitars. I will go without new shoes, clothes, makeup, hairdressers, etc for years with no problem. None of those things are important to me. Put a good guitar in my hands, one that suits my style of playing, and it almost doesn't matter what the price is. I will do what I can to get it and feel no guilt about it. £8k? OK! I'll take three! 😎
