What are your extravagant spends that you have zero guilt about

My mum lives about 130 miles away from me. I visit her three times a year. I always get an Uber there and a first-class train back.

My friend nearly fell off her seat laughing at my extravagance when I told her about this earlier today😅😅😅

My DH has a bit of a tinned fish habit and can easily spend £70 a month on it.

What ridiculous, extravagant things do you spend money on with zero guilt?

A nice coffee machine. I got it in the sales so I tell myself I actually saved money. And with toddlers in the house, I need caffeine. Totally worth every penny. It makes me happy every time I use it

Womaninhouse17 · 06/03/2026 08:59

@Imdunfer Thanks! I'd have to pay for installation too but even so, it sounds worth it. I hate the heat and would pay almost anything for a decent night's sleep in a cool room. I spent thousands on an electric canopy to shield the lounge from the sun and don't regret it.

TubeScreamer · 06/03/2026 09:00

Very expensive coffee beans. Having upgraded my coffee I can no longer drink cheaper stuff.

This has made me want a crumpet! I think mine is my subscription to gardens illustrated magazine. Plus the plants I want to buy after reading it.

A German friend’s brother came to visit her in the U.K. and on the way home his baggage was stuffed with crumpets. 😂

Honu · 06/03/2026 09:24

Coffee at a different place every day. Not because I like or need the coffee (I can happily make it at home) but because I live alone and this gets me out to meet my different groups of friends.

Squirrel60 · 06/03/2026 09:24

I don't like wine or champagne, etc., can't abide it and won't touch it, but I love cream liqueurs.

I'll go to a supermarket or a convenience store for 3 bottles of Baileys/or Terry Chocolate Orange, Rum Chata, Delaney's Country Cream, then to another for another 3 bottles from another place, all the 1-1.5L bottles when possible.

So the 6 bottles last me 2 years and can cost me about £165.00, that's my only non-essential extravagance!

Squirrel60 · 06/03/2026 09:25

Stuffed with crumpets, ha ha ha!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 06/03/2026 09:27

I’m not generally extravagant, but my most lavish spend by far was on a wonderful hand crafted bronze creation I fell in love with outside a little metal worker’s shop in France. However the price tag made my eyes water, but the following year it was still there so I thought sod it, and my lovely dh urged me to go ahead.

I have a feeling it was priced so high because the metal-worker didn’t actually want to part with it!

RomilyH · 06/03/2026 09:27

Hi everyone

Upper class on all long haul flights (my family refuse to pay such high costs, but they can all afford it) can’t lie I still ‘turn left’ and them ‘right’ and wave and say “see you when we get there”….my life has been hard at times but I’m older and I deserve it 😄

My handmade bespoke wooden bed (cost me a few thousand) I have really bad arthritis (controlled with meds, have a job where I have to be mobile and stretching which helps immensely), so I had the bed heightened so I could literally slide on/off (unfortunately calculations were a bit out) so had to buy a beautiful handmade solid wooden step to get on/in the bed.

Shutters…bought years ago now but cost more than my first 2 cars.

Garden plants, solar lights oh and my Pergola with screens and retractable roof, heater & firepit table……the first sign of summer I practically live in my garden. R

High end outdoor gear. Especially ultralight stuff. My 1-2 person tent was over a grand. (I may have multiple tents...) My 'best' sleeping bag, nearly £500. (I may also have multiple sleeping bags).
I also bought a Dermalux Led machine recently. £3k.
Interesting to read about the tinned fish... I love tinned fish. I contemplated spaffing £20 on a tin of tuna in Cornish butter but decided to hang fire as it seemed a tad extravagant 😂maybe this thread gives me permission to go back and get it.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 06/03/2026 09:30

Merch.

If I go to a concert or the theatre, I buy over-priced merchandise . It’s my thing. I love it.

Crumpets. Before you say they're not expensive, I'm not in the UK. I have to pay around £5 for a pack of 6 and a further £15 delivery charge. For crumpets.

Awww i really hope your crumpets are always cooked to your perfection 😊
Its not for me but I pay for real weetabix for dd and dh. One likes the big ones, one likes the mini ones. It’s bloody expensive now 🤣 but they eat it so I pay it

PermanentTemporary · 06/03/2026 09:34

Another one - told you I spend a lot. Solar panels and battery. I don’t see how anyone on a normal income is supposed to get near affording them but my gosh I love them.

Wear the dress - life's too short to wait for the perfect occasion.

Mine is probably Hello Skin face masks. They're £18 each but afterwards my skin feels as good as if I've been for a facial.

A few PPs have urged me to wear the dress!

The thing is, we don't go out: we have no social life (happier in each other's company) and prefer to eat in (DH is a great cook). All our interests are home-based. And I don't particularly want to wear such a masterpiece of design engineering to clean the bathroom.

This is why it was such an extravagance, really (quite apart from the unusual expense), but still I don't regret it. Taking just a few minutes now and then - perhaps every couple of weeks or so - to be utterly resplendent in front of the wardrobe mirror is rather exciting. Then I go back to leggings and T-shirts. It's like a little secret side of me. Or a bit like PP quietly rejoicing over her stash of jewels!

They’re incredibly easy to make at home! Try some & let us know how they turn out!

Can you let us know which machine you bought? I’ve been contemplating one for years!

Good grief, I’m not normally one to say make your own but in the case I think it would worth the £19.50/pack saving!

Agree with PP - we need a photograph.

Life's short, wear the bloody thing to Tesco if you have to.

The mad thing is, I also got some fabulous expensive bright orange underwear, and a Vivienne Westwood orb handbag, and some saucy little boots (Hush Puppies!!!!!!!! - who knewwwww...), so I've got the full kit. Maybe there will be an opportunity to flaunt it all one day. A good Girl Guide is always prepared!

I have never, ever, in my whole life spent this much money on an outfit. I'm sitting here in ancient Primark track pants and a cheap T-shirt from Amazon Basics 🤡

Truffle manchego cheese from the farmer's market- costs about £15 for a normal size block but it's so worth it!
Coffee- just splashed out on a Sage and a separate grinder, taking things up a notch.
Estee Lauder overnight repair- mainly bought in airports at a big discount but STILL.
Proper greek yoghurt. OH turned up with the 'greek style' stuff and was marched straight back to the shop.
Eurostar Premier tickets to Paris a couple of times a year. Worth every penny.
