I remember from primary school that we baked bread in the shape of a rooster (with a current as eye) and put it on a stick for the Palm Sunday celebrations.

Never knew why until much later Smile

Judas was much maligned imho.

Starmer will chair a Cobra meeting today on the economic impact of Iran war

Doubtless Reeves will seek to use Iran for the next round of tax rises.
She will have had a ‘good war’.

And for a giggle (or facepsalm)

As a committed Christian, I despise his using the Christian faith for his own ends like this. It’s just so cynical, but thankfully Christians in this country won’t fall for it the way Christians in the US do.

I thought the rooster would be a reference to Peter denying Christ three times?

It is. But the blame is always on Judas. Peter denies three times before the cock crows.

That was my assumption too.

Yes it is. Peter is much maligned for denying Jesus, but the other disciples had run away altogether!

I wouldn't share your optimism.

The "success" of Christianity has been it's existence as a framework on which you can hang many coats (of different colours). The problem with this is the inevitable lack of an accepted definitive version. So someone whose christianity doesn't require knowing the bible, let alone follow it, is just as valid as Pope Leo the whatever.

It's all part of lifes' rich tapestry

For Catholics he was the first Pope. Which infuriated me as a child when getting confirmed. I no longer am a member of the faith.

The people it will appeal to won’t be actual Christians, who I was talking about (the majority of whom are people of colour these days), but English nationalists, who set a lot of store on the country’s ’Christian’ heritage.

Psalm Sunday! That has given me a chuckle. Big day here in Wales as it’s known as Sul Y Blodau - Flower Sunday. It’s traditional here to put flowers on the graves of loved ones for Palm Sunday. I’m not sure whether that happens outside Wales.

In Ireland it's known as Domhnach an Iúir (Yew Sunday). Yew is a symbol of immortality in Celtic folklore.

having grown up in the English midlands of parents from the valleys I never heard of anyone but my valleys family doing it. The grave yard is full of people cleaning up graves and putting flowers. It’s quite sociable. When we could, we visited on Palm Sunday so dad could go with his siblings to the family plot.

placemats · 23/03/2026 11:26

Yes the graves were tidied up on Palm Sunday.

Counter-terrorism police are now leading the investigation into the arson attack on Jewish community ambulances outside a London synagogue

A group claimed responsibility for the attack this morning, which follows recent explosions it has claimed across Europe

The same group has previously claimed responsibility for recent arson attacks and bombings targeting Jewish institutions and locations it claims to have links to Israel or America in the Netherlands, Belgium and Greece

It has threatened further attacks against "American and Zionist interests"

British police and intelligence services are assessing the group's claim for the London attack, and police in different affected countries are doing the same

The group appears to be new and little is known about it

From Nigel Farage on x

The horrible attack on volunteer ambulances is part of a rising tide of hate against Jewish communities in Britain.

As I write, more undocumented young men are crossing the Channel.

Many will be from Iran — we have an open door to potential enemies.

Talk about trying to be the bigliest shit stirrer.

Meanwhile a proper response from various people.

People escaping an authoritarian regime shocker.

The same people rabble rousing for the war are the same people that want to extinguish the foreign aid budget. What humanitarian crisis.

Tax rises are very much required esp as so many on the 'right are demanding energy cost support.... isn't it funny how those who believe in "Small state" become socialists when it suits?

Just been out for a bicycle ride to my local Tesco, the lanes inc some b roads are shocking, some of the potholes would send a rider over the bars or smash up a car wheel and/or suspension...

... If only during their 14 years in power, the Tories had funded road mtce properly.

DuncinToffee · 23/03/2026 13:10

Is Farage advocating for safe routes for Iranian refugees?

“The research analysed almost 500 transactions covering January 2020 to February 2026 drawn from the Electoral Commission, the Register of Members’ Financial Interests, Companies House filings and civil society reports.
He said more than £130m can be traced to just four entities: Harborne, the hedge fund manager Paul Marshall, the Dubai-based investment firm Legatum and the financier Jeremy Hosking.

The vast majority – more than £133m, or 76% of the total – went not to political parties but to three media organisations: GB News, the Critic, and UnHerd. Byrne said GB News “privileges and channels coverage to Reform politicians” while the Critic and UnHerd predominantly feature rightwing and “anti-woke” voices, although UnHerd claims to be non-partisan.”

Now why would they spend their money on r/w media - what do they hope to gain in return?

Who are the wealthy climate sceptics funding rightwing UK politics?

How climate-denying money is influencing UK politics in the run-up to the general election

Is this the same Farage who liked to have ‘Bantz’ about gas chambers with fellow Jews at school?
Obviously, it is abhorrent and disgusting - and it really doesn’t need to have political point scoring attached to it today.
