Thanks for the new thread @DuncinToffee
Cat tax of Perdy approving spring. She’s been out into her catio once or twice since it got a bit warmer but has sniffed and come straight back in. Today she sat in the sun for a while. (Excuse the dreadful state of the garden!).

Thanks for the new thread @DuncinToffee . I am tax evading, but I see Badenoch is warmongering all over the place:

Kemi Badenoch has said the UK should take offensive action against Iran after UK bases were attacked.

“We need to do what we can to stop the ability for these attacks to take place,” the Tory leader told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

“I think that we should look at what our allies in the region are saying. Even if we’re not talking about Iran, Cyprus feels that we have not been helpful. It is extraordinary that Bahrain and Kuwait in the UAE are publicly criticising us...

“They think that we’re abandoning them.”

She continued:

"If your principle is, we will only wait until we are attacked rather than dealing with imminent threats properly, then we will be in a lot of trouble."

Asked about concern over her enthusiasm for British involvement in the bombing of Iran, Badenoch said:

"Being realistic is not gung ho. I don’t want a wider war."

"But sometimes the best way to de-escalate a situation is to try and finish it quickly, rather than let it drag out because you don’t want to get involved."

PandoraSocks · 05/03/2026 10:25

I wonder how she envisions a "quick finish"?

Does anyone else find it impossible to hear "quick finish" and not think "happy ending" ? And I am not convinced it's in any way accidental.

PandoraSocks · 05/03/2026 10:35

Just putting this here as an example of the Telegraph's utterly piss poor journalism. This is from an article published today bigging up Farage in Wales.

I’m not sure she’s entirely right about the view of Cyprus. They did say they were disappointed but also that Starmer did the right thing. I’m also not sure whether we should be expected to protect Cyprus itself - it’s an EU country. We are protecting our base, surely.

Obviously Reform/Tory coalition wouldn't work. Obviously Reform have money to burn when it comes to election propaganda hustings, except print in Welsh.

The poll the Telegraph used in the article is from last summer, so completely out of date.

The 20mph speed limit saves lives.

It’s funny, nobody talks about the 20mph rules any more. It’s almost like it’s worked.

When it comes to Badenoch, I don't think at all about anything she says. She is an irrelevance as a politician.

They do in Wales as it is not just on side roads. My view on 20mph roads is that the design should be such you are forced to slow down.

Time for cat tax.

@BestIsWest is 8n Wales, as am I. Can’t remember when I last heard anybody say anything about the 20mph zones. It’s almost always where cars and pedestrians come into close proximity. It’s fine (though some authorities did weaponise it against Labour by designating unnecessary roads). We’ve all got over it where I am though.

I think if the rest of the country is at risk because of the UK base, or partly because of the base, shrugging and going "that's your lookout" isn't very fair. And likely to reduce enthusiasm for having a base there. And actually way to close to JD Vance's view of the world (America being taken for a ride because it has soldiers on bases on other countries etc). Also they are allies. But France is also an ally, Greece is an ally and even though it's not great the UK was caught short with the frigate, part of the point of alliances is providing assistance when needed.

I see a bit of ranting on social media still, but nothing in real life.

I did see a mumsnetter who lives in England ranting about it recently 🙄

Oh, and having to wear seatbelts

I am old enough to have taken my test when you didn't have to wear a seatbelt - and can remember vividly how the world ended 31st January 1983.

The 20mph limit on our local suburban high street is one of those topics I never mention in earshot of DH. He never even drives down it as there is a bypass heading the same direction 🙄

One journey in Brum takes me down a 3 mile stretch of linked 20mph roads and zones.

I agree it's the EU protecting itself and we simply benefit from that (and that they are obviously an ally)

I do wonder if there is some political mileage to be gained within Cyprus of denigrating the UK. As with US bases in the UK, the issue of the base/sovereign land is a long standing hot topic within Cypriot politics. Obviously that doesn't mean we shouldnt be offering protection to the very best of our abilities given it's our base that is the target, not the Cypriot people.

Have to admit that's just sprung out of conversations with my Greek Cypriot neighbours. I know there there are posters on MN with a much more nuanced understanding that might have a different take on it.

BestIsWest · 05/03/2026 11:56

Our street and all the surrounding streets have been 20 mph for at least five years before the ruling came in. I have to travel at least a mile until I reach a 30mph zone. However there are two primary schools and a FE college within 250 yards of my house so I’m never going to be able to drive fast round here. Unlike some of the college kids.

Edited

So she would take us into war without a plan.

And we are looking at what our allies ared doing

Despite the strength of political criticism in the UK, Starmer's position on Iran mirrors several other European countries

France, Greece, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain are deploying and/or allowing the use of military assets in a defensive capacity while not condoning the initial attack
