Do you know where this is in London?

This is a really odd one I know.

This is a (blurred out) photo of my husband and his friend when they were teenagers. They'd hitched to London in the 1970s to see a band and had the time of their lives.

This is the only photo they have of the trip. Neither of them know where this photo was taken and, as they have a special occasion coming up, I would love to be able to tell them.

I've tried reversing the image and everything else I can so I'm throwing myself on the collective wisdom on MN. Can anyone help please?

Looks Whitehall-ish but that’s the best I can guess!

MakeYourOwnSunshine · 02/03/2026 16:42

Do they actually care where some random photo was taken 50 years ago? What an odd thing to waste time and effort on.

NewspaperTaxis · 02/03/2026 16:43

Regents St North - where the BBC HQ building is?

titchy · 02/03/2026 16:44

Aldwych?

Legoninjago1 · 02/03/2026 16:45

Bank?

BillieWiper · 02/03/2026 16:46

Somewhere in the city I'd say. Round near Bank or St Paul's.

Why bother posting? @SundayBells obviously does care. Hence their post!

Bank of England I reckon. Corner of Poultry / Princes street

SleekWhisky · 02/03/2026 16:48

I also thought near the Bank of England

You sound lovely…

If they dont know how are you going to know if MN comes up with the right answer? Genuine question - not being arsey!

ChanelLove · 02/03/2026 16:52

Bank was the first thing I thought of as well, although of course there have been lots of changes there in the last 50 years. Also lots of buildings around Whitehall have that look.

Do you know the name of the band?

Rhubarbandcustardd · 02/03/2026 16:52

Agree could be bank of England thereabouts - Whitehall or city somewhere

but also Trafalgar square going north on left hand side

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 02/03/2026 16:52

Bank

Eyelashesoffire · 02/03/2026 16:52

My first thought was Bank as well

Carryitjoyfully · 02/03/2026 16:53

It would be so much fun to recreate so many years later!

OP could look up suggestions on Google Street view to check.

That's what I was thinking, back when there was still a road along the north side.

rainydaysaway · 02/03/2026 16:54

Bank was also my first thought

blankittyblank · 02/03/2026 16:55

I also thought Bank.. Looks similar to the architecture round here, but can't find that exact spot.

cordialzempy · 02/03/2026 16:56

I think the guess that it’s Whitehall is correct. I think they statue they’re sitting on is Prince George, Duke of Cambridge, at the north end of Whitehall, the curve of the stone looks right!

It looks like the front of the London School of Economics across the street.

Bank?

I agree

Raquelos · 02/03/2026 17:03

Another vote for Bank of England here

ElizabethsTailor · 02/03/2026 17:04

I thought Bank as soon as I saw it. (Mentioning only because when a lot of people have the same gut reaction it usually indicates something).
