Do you know where this is in London?

This is a really odd one I know.

This is a (blurred out) photo of my husband and his friend when they were teenagers. They'd hitched to London in the 1970s to see a band and had the time of their lives.

This is the only photo they have of the trip. Neither of them know where this photo was taken and, as they have a special occasion coming up, I would love to be able to tell them.

I've tried reversing the image and everything else I can so I'm throwing myself on the collective wisdom on MN. Can anyone help please?

Do they remember where they saw the band? Or which band?

Bank of England I reckon. Corner of Poultry / Princes street

I think that this might be it.

ThePoshUns · 02/03/2026 17:05

whitehall/ Horse Guards parade/ admiralty arch area?

I think the guess that it’s Whitehall is correct. I think they statue they’re sitting on is Prince George, Duke of Cambridge, at the north end of Whitehall, the curve of the stone looks right!

I think you have it! I agree it looks very much like there. I initially thought Trafalgar Square, but yours matches very well.

NotAWurstToIt · 02/03/2026 17:08

Looks quite like Whitehall to me too

FrothyCothy · 02/03/2026 16:41

Looks Whitehall-ish but that’s the best I can guess!

That was my first thought as well.

OP could look up suggestions on Google Street view to check.

No, I mean if she finds the right location and says to them..here’s where you were..how will they know its right if they cant remember?

oh what a gorgeous thread! A lovely op and helpful people.

MumOfTheMoos · 02/03/2026 17:11

I reckon that’s the Bank of England

ChocolateCinderToffee · 02/03/2026 17:11

It looks like Marble Arch, a bit.

My first thought was also TS but on reflection Whitehall seems more likely, especially the plinth of the statue of the Duke of Cambridge.

onelumporthree · 02/03/2026 17:12

Bank of England was my immediate thought too.

fluffiphlox · 02/03/2026 17:13

I would say Whitehall too.

Tikitaka20 · 02/03/2026 17:18

I also thought Whitehall! I was also going to suggest @OP that you post this on Reddit. It’s a very different demographic to MN 🤣 but they have very good London-specific subreddits with very knowledgeable users who can hopefully corroborate the answers you’ve got here.

Hisnamewasnibbles · 02/03/2026 17:19

I also thought Bank as other have said, maybe Tivoli Corner which is a covered area of pavement with a hole in the top. Not described it very well but use google to have a look.

ThePoshUns · 02/03/2026 17:05

whitehall/ Horse Guards parade/ admiralty arch area?

This was my gut reaction, so I think @cordialzempy's suggestion of the statue plinth is a likely candidate.

namechange0998776554799000 · 02/03/2026 17:19

I would have said Bank

Do they actually care where some random photo was taken 50 years ago? What an odd thing to waste time and effort on.

Don't be so mean. Angry

TheyreJustNormalCheeses · 02/03/2026 17:20

My first thought was Whitehall too. I’m intrigued to hear what you might do.

DoloresDelEriba · 02/03/2026 17:23

Parliament Sq. bottom of a statue. Looking back towards Westminster Bridge/Big Ben.

It's really similar to the Duke of Cambridge statue plinth, but not quite the same – the DofC plinth has more curved angles than the plinth in the OP's photo

If they dont know how are you going to know if MN comes up with the right answer? Genuine question - not being arsey!

Edited

Might jog their memory 🤷‍♀️

onelumporthree · 02/03/2026 17:24

Has anyone else just spent the last five minutes on Google street view travelling all around the Bank of England and up and down Threadneedle Street, Cheapside, St Paul's etc? 😂

MMAMPWGHAP · 02/03/2026 17:25

I think it’s likely to be near somewhere very famous that they visited. So 10 Downing St & Whitehall would fit. Bank not an obvious destination for teens to visit in the 70s. Speaking as someone who was a teen in the 70s

Comedycook · 02/03/2026 17:25

Im another one whose immediate thought was Bank.
