Do you know where this is in London?

This is a really odd one I know.

This is a (blurred out) photo of my husband and his friend when they were teenagers. They'd hitched to London in the 1970s to see a band and had the time of their lives.

This is the only photo they have of the trip. Neither of them know where this photo was taken and, as they have a special occasion coming up, I would love to be able to tell them.

I've tried reversing the image and everything else I can so I'm throwing myself on the collective wisdom on MN. Can anyone help please?

oh what a gorgeous thread! A lovely op and helpful people.

Tell that to mardy arse makeyourownsunshine

Talkinpeace · 02/03/2026 17:26

What was the band and the year ?

Likely they would have been playing at somewhere like the Marquee club in Wardour Street
so then you are drawing a line from whichever motorway they would have come in on to Soho

Which brings me back to the old layout of the noth side of Trafalgar square
as its where people would gather

Looks Whitehall-ish but that’s the best I can guess!

Agreed. My first thought was the other side of Trafalgar Square near Admiralty Arch

onelumporthree · 02/03/2026 17:28

@SundayBells They went to see a band playing... where? Do they remember the venue?

I think you have it! I agree it looks very much like there. I initially thought Trafalgar Square, but yours matches very well.

I don't think it is - the proportions of the plinth aren't right. Nor is it the Bank of England again the stone work doesn't look right in colour or style and there is no angle where there is a building with a balustrade like the one on the background. Those blocks are more modern looking - cut sharp and very very large

PurpleDisco · 02/03/2026 17:29

I think this photo may have been taken near St Paul’s, Mansion House, Bank or Holborn / Embankment.

Doveyouknow · 02/03/2026 17:30

My first thought was bank

Do they actually care where some random photo was taken 50 years ago? What an odd thing to waste time and effort on.

I would. Think its a lovely idea to meet 50yrs later where a special memory was created.

LuluLemons · 02/03/2026 17:31

I’d also take a guess at the Bank area, near the Bank of England/The Ned! Have a hunt on google street view around there and hopefully you can find it!

I would say Whitehall / admiralty arch around that area.

Crimean War Memorial, Waterloo Place.

Do you know where this is in London?
cambiodenombre123 · 02/03/2026 17:33

I wondered about top of Trafalgar square but wasn't where i thought. Lots of similar architecture though. OP if they recreate it we'll need to see the pic!

But which gig venue would they have been going to around there
and from which main road ?

Not Hammersmith Odeon
Not Sir George Robey
Possibly Marquee
Finsbury Park Rainbow - not near Central London

RandomUsernameHere · 02/03/2026 17:36

I also thought Bank straight away before I saw any of the other comments.

What an odd thing for you to post.

But why would two lads hitching to a gig go there ?

I never went there in the 70's as there was nothing to see or do there for a teenager.

Agree could be bank of England thereabouts - Whitehall or city somewhere

but also Trafalgar square going north on left hand side

Edited

My first thought was trafalgar

It's really similar to the Duke of Cambridge statue plinth, but not quite the same – the DofC plinth has more curved angles than the plinth in the OP's photo

I agree that it looks like Whitehall, but that it's not the Duke of Cambridge plinth. I've attached a picture of that and the bit at the bottom that they're sitting on is much higher than the bottom of the DoC plinth. The DoC plinth also has an engraved panel in each end and writing on both sides which would be visible in the photo. You can also see brick work on the photograph, that the DoC plinth doesn't have. I think OP is looking for something on a bigger scale, maybe in Trafalgar Square or Parliament Square (although I looked round the latter on Google maps and can't see anything in the right stone and shape). It also doesn't look like anything else I could spot on Whitehall.

Try a geoguessr expert on Youtube. They solve challenges like this all the time.

Ask Rainbolt or one of the other geoguesssers.

Remember that back then the north side of Trafalgar Square was open to cars so the walls have all changed

Also a lot of the "bollards" in central London on street view are recent addition anti ram raid work

twilightcafe · 02/03/2026 17:46

Long shot but would uploading the photo to ChatGPT help?

My guess is Bank or nearby towards Monument.

jazzandh · 02/03/2026 17:47

Definitely @Blarn is correct
