Do you know where this is in London?

This is a really odd one I know.

This is a (blurred out) photo of my husband and his friend when they were teenagers. They'd hitched to London in the 1970s to see a band and had the time of their lives.

This is the only photo they have of the trip. Neither of them know where this photo was taken and, as they have a special occasion coming up, I would love to be able to tell them.

I've tried reversing the image and everything else I can so I'm throwing myself on the collective wisdom on MN. Can anyone help please?

We are going to do this. I hope they can still climb up there after all these years 😀

Climb up? It’s ground level. Either way don’t get a couple of middle aged men to climb on a statue in the middle of Whitehall. A night in the hospital or the slammer would be likely on the cards and you’ll be posting ‘anyone know which police station this is’?!

CambridgeCats · 02/03/2026 20:52

Looks like Whitehall / Horseguards to me. Also if they were day trippers visiting London it’s more likely they’d have gone along to look at Downing Street / Big Ben / Buckingham Palace than over to the City isn’t it?

It made me think of the Old Bailey

That's just your criminal past talking.

Damn, you’re on to me 🤣

I first thought the building behind was the Royal Courts of Justice but actually I think it might be the Natural History Museum. Did they go to the gig in the Royal Albert Hall?

Bank of England I reckon. Corner of Poultry / Princes street

I was going to say this too

Edit: see it has now been solved!

Somewhere in the city I'd say. Round near Bank or St Paul's.

Yes this is what I was thinking

EmeraldRoulette · 02/03/2026 22:43

I can't believe posters actually got the answer! Very impressive. I was absolutely stuck, for some reason I was thinking somewhere around the National Gallery - obviously not. I always help on these threads thinking I'll be able to identify it but this time I was just thinking a plinth, a wall... going to need a lot more information 😂 a few clever people got it, most impressive.

Also I can't believe anyone thinks that a 50-year-old photograph memory isn't important - of course it is and I'm so pleased that you found the answer @SundayBells!

Looks Whitehall-ish but that’s the best I can guess!

I agree.

Myanna · 02/03/2026 22:56

Oh wow I'm serious impressed. There's a lot of places in London with that kind of architecture, I was wondering about parts of Belgravia. Well done!

Crimean War Memorial, Waterloo Place.

I think this is it. I pulled this photo off maps and it looks very much like it (photo is looking away from Pall Mall). And it would make sense I guess as it’s a more touristy area.

I'm really intrigued by all the posters suggesting getting the OP's OH to retrace his steps by naming the venue, which route they took, where they ate when they were there etc. Unless it was a particularly famous venue or a city I was very familiar with I'd struggle to do that for a trip I took ten years ago, let alone 50 years ago!!!

I am one of the PPs who suggested similar. I don't think it's that crazy.
With some research (maps, asking friends, Google) I could piece together street names, what transport we took, gig we went to etc. I have vivid memories of significant events from my youth, probably because I didn't do such things very often. I'm 55 so not quite as old as OP's DH, but am sure I could piece together more detail with what's rattling around in my head.
e.g. "Oh remember on the way to the bus we stopped at the bar near Oxford St tube" or "When we left the venue remember how we marvelled at how amazing the Thames looked".

Do they actually care where some random photo was taken 50 years ago? What an odd thing to waste time and effort on.

Odd of you to waste your time on this post, then?

If they dont know how are you going to know if MN comes up with the right answer? Genuine question - not being arsey!

Edited

Google Maps.

As has been said an entirely miserable comment but also did you come up with your username because it’s the exact opposite of what you actually think?

WhatNextImScared · 03/03/2026 06:18

Agree with those saying around Bank - lots of streets there that look similar though

HoratioBum · 03/03/2026 07:29

ThePoshUns · 02/03/2026 17:05

whitehall/ Horse Guards parade/ admiralty arch area?

This would be my guess as well

B0D · 03/03/2026 08:03

Looks like, Bank near the station

Sidebeforeself · 03/03/2026 08:55

Won’t someone please cancel the cheque!

RudePie · 03/03/2026 09:38

@Sidebeforeself

We could have a little side bet on how many more "could it be..." answers there are :-)

Somewhere around Bank was my first thought too

Edit because SOLVED! Well done sleuths
